What's your reaction to Gov. Bill Haslam's State of the State address and his budget proposals?

Wouldn't listen to him talk about the price of bread.
Am interested in the Florida Primary results. Hope to God Romney kills it.

By: Loner on 1/31/12 at 5:53

Missed it.

By: govskeptic on 1/31/12 at 5:59

Best news was lowering the sales tax on food by one-half percent over
3 yr period. Raise inheritance tax from 1 million to 1.25. Neither very much
but better than a stick in the eye. No mention of consumer rights or
protections being added, of course, it's been 25+ yrs since that was a
subject of any concern to anyone in the legislature!

By: gdiafante on 1/31/12 at 6:36

Didn't see or hear the speech, but didn't have to. The state of the state is as it has always been: backwards and regressive.

2012's version of the state is not much different than the Scopes Monkey Trial version, just better haircuts. No wonder people here don't believe in evolution...they have yet to experience any.

By: gdiafante on 1/31/12 at 6:46

Excellent.

Yes, they are focused like a laseer on job--NOT!! Grow up, repubs and realize that this is not the way to improve the Tennessee economy! Stupid uneccesary "moral" legislation is pandering plain and simple. The governor was elected to govern, not pander to idiots. Oh ,yes, he was also elected to CREATE JOBS!!! How's that worked out for you? I have been un- or underemployed for over a year. Thanks for nothing, gov!

By: dargent7 on 1/31/12 at 7:47

T-7: Unless you're a brain surgeon specializing in nuclear fusion, there's plenty of "jobs" out there. Not doing want you were trained for or what you want, but "a job".
Haslam couldn't find his ass with two hands and Obama either in regards to "job creation". You have to go with the prevailing program: Take one from who's ever hiring.

By: Loner on 1/31/12 at 7:59

GD, your comment about the Scope's Monkey trial is witty and sadly true. I made a comment along similar lines on the NCP story about Governor Haslam cutting 1,000 jobs. The comment irked Govseptic....hey, if the shoe fits wear it...

By: Loner on 1/31/12 at 6:35

"Haslam proposed spending nearly $264 million to pay for long-deferred higher education construction projects, including a new science building at Middle Tennessee State University and a science lab at the University of Tennessee."

Uh...will the new "science" buildings be devoted to "Creation Science"? Most of the legislature still rejects the idea of evolution; the new buildings must be for pseudo-science, right?

The total budget is at $31 billion, with less than 10 billion coming from the citizens of TN...that means that TN is a federal welfare state...receiving over 21 billion in federal aid, to keep the place afloat.

This is an example of rugged individualism, limited government and states rights? Without the allowance from Uncle Sam, Tennessee would resemble a third world nation....and still many Tennesseans talk about secession.....stupid crackers.

Loner - Nashville TN is looking more like a third world country, everyday.

Shit. Them hens in every yard here in Nashville is starting to look pretty good as a start.

Loner it has changed a lot for the worse, since you was probably here. It used to be a beautiful city.

That CO. Govenor's book title, "I Eat Scorpions for Breakfast" was from Norris.
I did not know that.

I read this yesterday. You might find it interesting.

Tennessee Restaurant Throws Out Anti-Gay Lawmaker | A restaurant in Knoxville, Tennessee refused to serve state Sen. Stacey Campfield, the man who sponsored the state’s “don’t say gay” bill, compared homosexuality to bestiality, and most recently told Michelangelo Signorile that it’s virtually impossible to spread HIV/AIDS through heterosexual sex. “I hope that Stacy Campfield now knows what if feels like to be unfairly discriminated against,” the Bistro at the Bijou wrote on its Facebook wall on Sunday. The restaurant has received an overwhelmingly positive response. (HT: Michelangelo Signorile)

Yeah...even the Metro cops are having trouble finding quality personnel...another bit the dust...DUI.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/31/12 at 8:24

I heard that this morning, Loner. At less he wasn’t in a Patrol Car.

By: Loner on 1/31/12 at 8:29

They should have served Campfield....but made an announcement like this:

"Laies & Gentlemen: We have a special customer eating here tonight...he's the homophobic, anti-gay lawmaker who sponsored the "don't say gay" bill in the Legislature....Ladies and Gentlemen...may I present, Senator Stacey Campfield...please, sir, stand up and be recognized".

The guy would probably have walked out at that point.

But then again, the other diners may have applauded the guy.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/31/12 at 8:30

State officials said ending 1,166 positions in the government — roughly half of which currently are filled — is necessary to create new efficiencies. That cuts the workforce by 2.6 percent. Once these latest layoffs occur, the state will employ 43,000 people — 7,000 fewer than when the recession hit in 2008.

I guess that by cutting all of these State jobs, it will increase the unemployed workers to the national total. If all Republican governors do this, the GOP can say it is Obama’s fault.

Apparently the cop had passed out behind the wheel and the driver side door was open...according to the NCP article. I wonder if he was packing heat too....Curry Todd style...an armed, drunk, off-duty cop is a menace to society, IMHO.

Stacey is also a girl's name...poor guy probably got teased as a youngster...now he's out to prove his male gender orientation....his manhood...his studliness.....his manliness....his vim and his vigor....in spite of his gender-bender first name....the "Boy named Sue effect"?

Sounds like an advanced inferiority complex...but I'm no psychiatrist...only Stacey's therapist knows for sure.

It must be a heavy drinker that would treat this story so lightly.

You have got a point there Loner. He does have an obession with butt sex.

gd - spot on with your Scopes post.

As far as that pathetic excuse for a human Stacy
1.) He's not covered under any civil rights act. He entered into a private (non-chain across state lines) business, and was refused service by the owner - as is their right. Don't like it Stacy? Suck it.
2.) I would be willing to bet a good amount of money that Stacy is one of those guys out by the dam on a regular basis trolling for some action.

Ideal climate for teacher student ratio is 10 to 1. With Haslam plan there will more students and less time to educate. This equate to less intelligent citizens and more for corporation and the rich.

TN would have more jobs if the Congress had passed Presidnet Obama's back to work bill. We have bridges, roads, dams and other needed repairs from border to border. Who will the GOP blame when another bridge falls down or road cave-in?

Moonglow1: Haslam gave his Commissioners big hefty wages of between 12-30 percent. Now he has left some money in his budget to give the remaining poor souls a generous 2.5 percent. And he will be giving himself a hefty raise by lowering the inheritance tax rate. Ah shucks-Haslam just a country boy at heart.

As for the science center: the only thing that makes sense is that he is building it for some company planning to relocate to TN but will not do so without "corporate welfare" thus a new science center. Or the idiots are building it to "prove intelligent design rocks. ". Ah yes, intelligent design is the new normal brought to you by the makers of the Tea Nut, LLC.

Loner said

"This is an example of rugged individualism, limited government and states rights? Without the allowance from Uncle Sam, Tennessee would resemble a third world nation....and still many Tennesseans talk about secession.....stupid crackers."

And once again Loner has pointed out something that I've been pointing out over the past months; that within the past thirty years Tennessee has never once paid more in Federal taxes than they received in Federal funding. Tennessee (like a lot of other conservative states) balances their budget, takes care of their poor, educates their children and builds their roads with the hard earned dollars that the demon liberal states overpay into the system. Tennessee, for all it's talk of fiscal responsibility, is the epitome of a welfare state.

"Students take fewer classes per semester. They take more years to get through. Why? Because they have free money," Gingrich said in a speech to local Republicans in Florida, according to the Washington Post. "I would tell students: 'Get through as quick as you can. Borrow as little as you can. Have a part-time job.' But that's very different from the culture that has grown up in the last 20 years."

But a Vanity Fair article shows that Newt did none of the above. He extended his education and used marriage deferments to stay out of Nam, he refused to work while going to school (in spite of the fact that he needed the money... for which he begged his father for), and worst of all, his first wife (remember, she's the one Newt ditched in the hospital while she was suffering from cancer) paid for his entire education all the way through his PHD. Those are family values that you can hang your hat on.....

By: Moonglow1 on 1/31/12 at 10:47

Moonglow1: Gingrich is sponsoring the new TN science center for Haslam's "Moon Walk" project. Haslam wants to promote Music City so he and Gingrich plan to resurrect Michael Jackson through the power of prayer: Gingrich and Haslam are presenting a joint venture financed by the taxpayers called "The New Moon Walk. " Doomed to failure Bain Capital standing by to restructure it's debt. Romney will then make billions and finance his next project: Space Monkey-staring Gingrich and Haslam. Michael Jackson nowhere to be found. Was he resurrected. Gingrich says yes, he has the power like God to resurrect. Maybe Michael stayed on the moon. Oh look, I see the man in the moon!! Looks like he's dancing. We need another science project to verify. But Romney will not finance another "Fact Finding Moon Mission. " We better vote for the Gingich Haslam Duo. They Git er Done!!

I heard it reported that some people actually did applaud, but what they were applauding was the Senators leaving.

One piece of advice for the Senator though..... never piss off the people that might be handling your food. If I were him, I'd avoid eating out for soooooooome time. My only hope is that he realizes this and thinks about it. Can you imagine how this would play mind games with a homophobe like Campfield? LOL.....

By: dargent7 on 1/31/12 at 10:56

Waita minute, there brrrrk.
It took 120 hours to graduate from University/ Michigan State.
The courses were 4.0 credit hours and most took 4 classes, at 16.0 per semester.
That was then, ( cir.1975) when our daddy's paid for it. No one in my day had a "job".
Now, students have to work part-time jobs and have to fit school into their job schedule.
I worked alongside a guy at Vanderbilt (last week, so it's real-time), who had 3 student loans, a scholarship, and had to worke 20hrs a week just to buy books. He had to pay $38,000 a year in tuition.
Same thing happened with a guy at Belmont. And Lipscomb.
Today's student has to pay over a $120,000 in tuition to graduate.
No one can do it in 4 years with the jobs need.

By: brrrrk on 1/31/12 at 11:01

You're absolutely right darg. Going to college now is like being saddled with a mortgage size loan at the age of 22. It's ridiculous!! And if you can't find a job that pays enough or can't find a job "period", you're shit out of luck. Once again it's obvious that people like Newt are clearly living in a dream world with no connections to reality.
