Up for Debate: HSBC, too big to jail

In other news last week, HSBC said it would pay a record $1.9 billion settlement as the U.S. Department of Justice decided not to indict the London-based company on allegations that it laundered billions of dollars in international drug cartel money. Are worries that prosecuting such a large company might destabilize the world economy enough to not hold its executives responsible for any possible criminal actions, particularly when untold numbers of individuals are prosecuted for the same crimes?

I agree, bfra. But even if every assault weapon were banned, what about those already in circulation?
Times and people have changed. Before I retired I used I-40 and many nights when I was on my way home and saw a car broke down, I always stopped to see if I could help.
Quite a few couldn't get back on the road that night and I took them home with me. I have a camper and put them up for the night. Invite them in my house for breakfast then take them back to their car to get them back on the road.
That was then. Today I don't slow down if I see a breakdown.
The entertainment media is probably a catalyst for the nutters. I like watching the Quentin Tarantino type movies, but they may be a full moon for unstable people.
Are the people that are rushing out to buy assault weapon, just your everyday average citizen or they KKK are or they Survivalist? The rush to buy weapons could be a prelude to another civil war. Just asking for any ideas.

G, a man in China killed kindergarten children with a knife. Does your stupidity have no bounds. If people want to kill and there are no guns available, they will come up with another way to do it.
Our society is sick. On youtube there is a video showing how to "knock out your kids" with a cloth over their face and a chemical. Sick. It is called naptime and it is sick. A teacher at a local school told her 11 year olds to watch it cause it's funny. It is not funny. It is sick, sick, sick.

What's wrong with re-instituting the assault weapon ban that was in effect until 2004 and require tougher requirements to own a firearm, specifically a longer waiting period, tougher background check and a current and valid psychological exam?
Again, do your homework, dummy. The assault weapon was in effect during Columbine. DUH! Did the Ban stop Columbine? And many other mass murders were committed during the 10 year ban. Google it, dinkwad!
A ban on stupid won't help you and your people. So we all just need to work around your kind.

Yogi, I used to help a lot of people also. It's too dangerous now. But I bet you G, bfra, loner and the ilk never opened their home to strangers unless there was something in it for them. They are all too self-centered. Bullies, if you will! And I still think Loner has either hurt someone deeply or been hurt deeply by someone. No one is a "loner" by choice -- or conscious choice. By the way, I listened to a guy talk about Warren Buffet and who has studied & read about Buffet extensively. He said that Buffet's primary goal is to never pay taxes. He takes a modest income; reinvests everything and so on. And he is such a Hypocrite!

I think you're on to something about the entertainment media, slacker. The number one game is Call of Duty. Almost every television show (that is not a sitcom) has gun violence of some type.
It's saturated into everything, including music. One of the top songs of 2011 was "Pumped up Kicks". Look up the lyrics. That song was on top 40 radio.
It's everywhere. There's no way it doesn't have an effect.

It's really more about parents monitoring what they're kids are exposed to than censoring Hollywood. But that shouldn't mean we can't discuss the causes for Hollywood condoning so much violence.

On 4 August 2010, 26-year-old Fang Jiantang (方建堂) slashed more than 20 children and staff with a 60 cm knife, killing 3 children and 1 teacher, at a kindergarten in Zibo, Shandong province.
That’s 13. Do we count this? “In September 2011, a young girl and three adults taking their children to nursery school were killed in Gongyi, Henan by 30-year-old Wang Hongbin with an axe.”
That’s three Chinese school-related killings involving an edged weapons that killed 17 people in one year, just three shy of the total victims of Adam Lanza’s murderous rampage. (Not including victims disfigured in the attacks.)
Last year. If we go back to 2004, Yan Yanming ”entered a dormitory at the Number Two High School in Ruzhou, China on November 26, 2004 with a knife and attacked twelve boys, killing nine of them.”

Did you read what Lanza's barber said. He stated that Adam Lanza never moved unless his mother told him to. He never looked up and never spoke. There is something going on in that family that is sick. Many doctors are speaking out that children with autism are not violent to the point of planning a mass murder.
I am so sad for those families. I wish we could all unite so that they didn't die in vain. But we won't; we'll argue till the cows come home.
