Up for Debate: The hype over SOPA and PIPA

Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 12:13am

After a day when many websites protested the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act by blacking out or otherwise drawing attention to the acts in the U.S. Congress, do you feel the impact of the protests? Did you support or oppose the acts before? Did that change? What is your reaction to co-sponsors of the acts dropping their support?

These are the good old days of the internet...enjoy them while you can.

By: yogiman on 1/19/12 at 12:53

You may enjoy these until the next election. If Barry continues his usurpation of office, all your rights are off.

Obama exposure #14 - Radical Abortion Agenda

Obama is implementing a radical abortion agenda that is expanding abortion, imposing an abortion funding mandate on every U. S. citizen and bolstering a legal right to abortion.

By: dargent7 on 1/19/12 at 4:48

I remember when the creater of Napster was arrested.
These whining morons at the record cos. who claim they're losing "millions of dollars" better get with the program.
I even remeber when The Beatles let Apple computer use that name, "as long as music wasn't used by a computer". Can you believe that senario?
Technology is cool. Careful if you try to use it sparingly.

By: songwriter on 1/19/12 at 6:41

I'm surprised that here in Music City, where there are so many songwriters, there is not more awareness that what this law boils down to is only the blocking of foreign sites that facilitate the robbery of copyrights that are protected in the U.S. If you hate record companies, OK. But do you also hate songwriters and begrudge them the few pennies they can get from a download?

By: jvh2b on 1/19/12 at 7:34

Uh songwriter...might wanna double check your facts there. I highly doubt all those companies are going to protest something that wouldn't affect them in the slightest if that's the case.

And yogi...women do have a right to an abortion....so sayeth the Supreme Court. Deal with it.

By: dargent7 on 1/19/12 at 7:37

Out of sheer bordom, read "yogi's " post @ 12:57 am!
Obama, a Communist born in Kenya, is now mandating abortion to all women who concieve.
If this guy isn't the definition of "certifiable", I do not know what is.

By: govskeptic on 1/19/12 at 7:38

While the claims that these laws only apply to foreign sites, those claims
fall on mostly unbelieving ears! While this community does, in fact, have
great respect for the songwriters and artist, we also know most of this
intellectual theft comes from the Chinese! Since absolute no American
laws are honored by that country either government or entrepreneurs, it's
a ruse to pretend otherwise.
Eleven years of good intentions with the American public taking the hit
of lost privacy and limited speech is coming to a hopeful end. These
proposals are allowing far too much of the Camel's body into the tent!

By: yogiman on 1/19/12 at 7:57

dargent7,

If you actually knew about Barry Soetoro what I know, would you believe it?

A point on the issue: As you should know, he stated many times the State of Hawaii would not issue him his birth certificate yet he made the statement in his book "Dreams from My Father" that he found his birth certificate in some papers his father gave him. Well, was it an American birth certificate issued by the State of Hawaii, or was it a Kenyan birth certificate?

Only he knows, doesn't he? And you got an education from college? I'm glad I didn't go to your school.

My yogimanish-to-English dictionary translates yogiman's last posting as:

WAAAAAAHHHHHH! WAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!

By: Loner on 1/19/12 at 8:13

Addressing the topic of the day:

Like any legislation, there are the stated, well-publicized good reasons and then there are the less noble, more obscure, real reasons.

Look who is in favor of the proposed legislation and look who is opposed to it.

Every member of Congress takes campaign donation money...their strutting and fretting is a paid-for performance....he who pays the piper calls the tune...'twas ever thus.

I prefer an open, honest, free and unbridled internet, as opposed to one that is regulated by government bureaucrats for a host of dubious good reasons.

Ironically and hypocritically, the "free market", "small government", right-wing, federal lawmakers are leading the charge in what is essentially Big Brother's internet power grab.

By: producer2 on 1/19/12 at 8:16

jvh2b,
It does affect those companies and here is an example. Let's say you own a building and you rent space out to various companies. Let's say some of those companies are doing things that are illegal. What organizations like google are doing is saying to us... We know it is illegal but we won't get involved, you need to stop them from doing this...all the while they keep collecting rent. Google is the worst, they have and continue to rip off other peoples work in the name of the almighty dollar. Read the Steve Jobs book for example.

I would think that stealing is just that stealing.

By: producer2 on 1/19/12 at 8:20

Loner,
Can we quit blaming government for everything? Is it government's fault that our society is incapable of policing itself? I am not saying all government is good by any stretch but without it we would certainly be back in the wild west. We as a society are to blame for everything INCLUDING bad government.

By: Loner on 1/19/12 at 8:20

The troll schlepps the birther BS in here every single day...not to convince us of the validity of his arguments, but to annoy this posting community.

Up here, in the Empire State, we call such people, "A-holes".

Ignore the A-hole...that's the only known way to eventually rid the board of such creeps...they eventually find more fertile ground for their seeds of hate.

I tried to be reasonable even compassionate towards our annoying parasite...my efforts have failed, he enjoys being the village A-hole....that's his chosen role...and he plays the role well.

By: Loner on 1/19/12 at 8:33

Producer2, I do not disagree with anything that you stated in your 8:20 post. It's hard to fault the campaign donors, if they can legally purchase US Representaion that way, who can blame them for doing so.

As for the politicians...they rationalize taking the donations by reasoning that their opponents are all doing it, so why not me?

And these Super PACs are the newest and potentially the gravest threats to what remains of our democratic system, IMHO....of, for and by the people is out...of, for and by the special interest groups is in....that's the Bush family's lasting legacy to the nation...they gave us a Supreme Court that actually believes that money talks and that conversation is a form of protected free speech. Not only that, the primarily Bush-family-appointed USSC judges decided that brick & mortar corporations have constitutional person-hood.

Most Americans are docile and do not wish to rock the boat...their laziness and fear have set the stage for this tragedy....give 'em food stamps and cable TV and they become content and quiet....bread and circus.

By: dargent7 on 1/19/12 at 8:34

Gee, "yogi". My Birth Certificate is from the same hospital that Mitt Romney was born in.
His father, is like my father. His was born in Mexico City, mine was born in Montreal Quebec, Canada. Both foreign countries.
I guess that makes us both "illegal aliens" and should be deported under your "Usurpation Law". Never mind both our mothers gave birth to us on American soil. Unless, of course, with your tin-foil hat tuned up, Detroit isn't an American city. It is, after all, a French name. Or is it like Pontiac? Indian?
And both of us cannot run for President of the United States.
Do you realize how freekin' dumb and stupid you sound?

By: producer2 on 1/19/12 at 8:52

Loner,
I think we are on the same page, I have just tired so of the rhetoric from both sides of the political equation. I do remember a time when there were different philosophies but a common goal. I wish for those times again....

By: yogiman on 1/19/12 at 9:01

No, dargent7,

I don't know how dumb and stupid you and your co-posters here think I am, but I do know how dumb and stupid you are. Simply because your father was born in Canada would not necessarily disqualify you for office.

If his parents were American citizens, he would also be an American citizen. Otherwise, if he moved to the United States and became a naturalized American citizen before you was born, and your mother is an American citizen, sadly to say; yeah, dammit, a fool like you would be eligible on his 35th birthday for the Oval Office. You wouldn't even need the college education you claim.

By: yogiman on 1/19/12 at 9:03

Loner,

I may be an a$$hole to you and your fellow idiots, but for a group to accept someone in the highest office in our nation tells me you are a bunch of damn fool idiots. That is, unless you are communists.

By: yogiman on 1/19/12 at 9:08

Sorry, Loner, I guess I was POed and wrote too fast... I meant for a group of idiots like you to accept someone in that office they know nothing about...

By: govskeptic on 1/19/12 at 9:20

producer2, do you mean back in the days when the Chamber of Commerce
was believed to have the best interest of all citizens as their agenda? Way
back when "if the local newspaper, said it was so-that it actually was?"
Back when the TEA was believed to have the best interest of "the children"
as their goal, versus Union coffers and influence? Oh, the times they are
a changing, and the internet is helping in the most positive of ways! At last
those discoveries are scaring and scarring the status quo!

By: yogiman on 1/19/12 at 9:27

Loner,

In response to your 2nd 8:20 post: No I do not enjoy being the "village A-hole". I do enjoy trying to teach a few fools some facts.

It seems; if you don't know it, it ain't so. As I have stated before, prove to me Barry Soetoro is in that office legally and I'll apologize and get off your backs. Sadly, you can't. I wish you could because I have much better readings I would like to do in my life.

So many points I have made regarding his comments about not being allowed to show his birth certificate, his false Social Security number plus much more seems to be immaterial to you.

That, sir, tells me you are an idiot. Excuse me, let's make that a fool.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the ABC interview tonight with Gringrich's 2nd wife.
The one he dumped chasing that helmet haired, bleached blonde called Callista around the desk. As if he could move around a desk. And how wonderful for the Republican Party. Having two adulterors in the White House. How fitting.
The early leak is that, "he's a bloated, fat, piece of shit".
Beyond that, I don't have a clue what she'll say.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/19/12 at 10:17

d7-

I would think that there have been more than two adulators in the White House. Just saying. ;-)

By: yogiman on 1/19/12 at 10:19

dargent7,

Would you and Loner want to learn a little more about your favorite boy Barry?

Go to "posted by Rick Perry on April 1, 2011 at 6:30am" . Read the first issue which is an article written by an ex IRS investigator. It indicates where Barry got his wealth. Have fun!

By: Loner on 1/19/12 at 10:27

Producer & Gov: I too seem to remember a time when their was less rancor and more "comradeship" between the opposing American factions...a time when compromise was not seen as weakness and praise for one's opponent was not unknown.

Then came the demise of the "antiquated" Fairness Doctrine. The effect was not immediate, but slowly the pundits, politicians and demagogues began to realize that they could get away with character assassination, telling half-truths and even bold-faced lies....with relative impunity.....no checks and balances.....eventually we got "Fair & Balanced" FOX News, the right-wing megaphone and hate-based echo-chamber.

All the "Clear Channel" AM band is now owned and operated by right-wing tycoons.

The "Christian broadcasters" are actually politically charged citadels of faith-based hate radio....and they are now gobbling up the FM band to augment the AM base.

The closest thing to a left-leaning counterbalance to that bully pulpit arrangement is the much-maligned and largely de-funded National Public Radio and PBS. And the familiar charge that they are powerful and overwhelmingly biased towards the Democratic Party is a Republican Tea Party canard.

As the USSC has taught us, money talks and it has the sweet voice of noble intentions.

Thanks for the reminder, D7, I think that the nation needs to hear the woman out...they say that, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Maybe we will get to see a cat-fight between Hair Helmeted Caligula and Wife #2...I'd tune in to pay to view TV for that. They could do a mudfight...for a noble charity...once the hair-pulling starts and Caligula flips her wig...pixellated crotch shots would quickly follow....bill it as the Battle of Newt's Skanks? Ratings would eclipse the Super Bowl's.

The leg scissors hold is my favorite cat-fight image....how about you guys?

I Googled it:

Hopefully, Caligula will not wear a Snow Miser costume...no pants! But then again...I've been to Brushwood...down with pants, up with skirts....Caligula's Southern end may be more pleasing to the eye than her Northern end is....Newt saw something there, he dumped a wife over it...let's see the merchandise.

They should have a debate between the 1st lady wannabes...on Gerry Springer's show.

By: yogiman on 1/19/12 at 10:48

I see where Rick Perry has dropped out of the race and endorsed Newt Gingrich. Whose next?

By: Loner on 1/19/12 at 10:51

Ben, my school colors were purple and white...that shot of Caucasian Caligula in the purple outfit...just tears at my heart strings...Ouch!

By: BenDover on 1/19/12 at 10:52

His second wife was very Lily Tomlin esque. Evidently she's still pissed off about being dumped for the Snow Miser.

By: yogiman on 1/19/12 at 10:57

Much is being said about Gingrich being married three times. May I ask y'all this question: How many of you men married a woman thinking you could divorce her in a few years? If any of you say you did, you married the woman for something other than normal love to begin with. Maybe it was because she wouldn't get in bed with you before you married her and you wanted a "piece" of her so bad?

BenDover,

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I'm sure any of you whom are married think of your wife as beautiful. Do all other men? Or are they simply supposed to?

Or was they so "beautiful" because of their wealth?

I found this tutorial on how to transform oneself into a blond Barbie Doll:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4-GRH2nDvw&feature=fvsr

Caligula knows all those tricks and lots more.

If the video is too intense or tedious, you can advance it to the end, and see the final product...this is insider stuff......Blond Barbie Tranny (BBT) struts into a gay piano bar....
