Up for Debate: Metro Council elections

Monday, June 20, 2011 at 9:05pm

This week, The City Paper begins a new regular web feature called "Up for Debate," in which we ask our readers to weigh in on issues of the day by answering a question. Today's question:

On Aug. 4, Davidson County voters will choose a new Metro Council. Each of the 35 district candidates is on the ballot, and many are engaged in tight races. Of this year's council candidates, who will pull off the biggest upset and why?

I don't know much about the other districts, but Holleman has my vote in 24.

Since all elections are now becoming "reality shows". with little to do with
anything other than playing the media game, I will pick my candidates on
who tweets the best photos, or gets the biggest celebrity to endorse them!

I'm trying to give up government participation. My doctor tells me it's hazardous to my mental well-being.

That is difficult to answer as most races are obscure and don't get any sort of media analysis. Without facts, one cannot made a good choice.

For the few that have been reported upon here, I'd agree that Holleman v. the Dean Puppet is one to watch. I'd hope that Holleman is retained but if the Dean Puppet wins, that would be the biggest upset.

II hope all of them who are running are upset and those who aren't running will be upset at the results. May it be their wake up call.

New mantras - "If the costs you don't know; then you must vote no" and
"If on 3rd reading you must amend; then the public must hear it again".

Pigs will flap their wings before either happens but dream on.

How much does the guy who's signs say, "Councilman at Large" weigh?

By: slacker on 6/21/11 at 8:11

I'll probably vote for the candidates with the least annoying poll workers.

By: Funditto on 6/21/11 at 9:19

I'm not sure if this would be an "Upset" but remain hopeful that Mr. Crapton is NOT elected at-large and finally leaves public life. He's an huge embarrassment to this city.

By: Funditto on 6/21/11 at 9:20

The Dean puppet won't win. Everyone is onto it. Go Jason!

By: bfra on 6/21/11 at 9:34

Fun - Crafton has better interest in Nashville, by far more so than the current mayor and his puppets. I will not vote for anyone that has ever given an indication of being a Dean puppet. Vote Dean OUT!

I've always said, "Which of them would you be content with were you to find yourself stranded on an island for a lengthy period of time?" Holleman is one to pick, for sure!

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice. :-)

I agree, they should be there. Tell you what, you pester the HOF guys to get Rush in and I'll keep pestering them to get Poco in. Country music wouldn't be what it is today if it weren't for the crossover influence of Poco (Wait, is that a good thing or a bad thing?). :-)

I dunno about this new format.
Plucking "comments" out of context was bad enough.
Why stray from the typical mainstream newspaper's format and just publish 2 or 3 LTEs.?

Ask of them two questions: Did you vote for Obama? If yes, are you sorry?

If the answer to that is 'No' and 'N/A', then you've found a good person.

If the answer to that is 'Yes' then 'Yes', you've found a work in progress who might be worth taking a chance on, with a short enough leash.

If the answer to that is 'Yes' then 'No', then s/he is an idiot, and isn't worth becoming a La Vergne dog catcher, much less a Metro Davidson County councilperson.

Did Loner finally get run out of town? was it because of his shabby treatment of JOOOOOOOOOOOOOs ?

By: gdiafante on 6/21/11 at 12:11

Looks like someone's momma/sister asked them to get out of the basement for a few hours...lol

By: serr8d on 6/21/11 at 12:52

gd, both your wife and sister are well entertained. In fact, your sister gave me diamonds, that I then gave to your wife.

More attention than she ever gets from you, obviously.

By: gdiafante on 6/21/11 at 1:02

Is that supposed to be an insult? LOL

Are you a grown man or a child? I'm starting to wonder.

By: gdiafante on 6/21/11 at 1:03

Well, either way, you're not the sharpest knife in the drawer, that's for sure. Now, go back to watching SpongeBob and let the adults talk. Thanks little man.

The RnR HoF is, as the Sex Pistols put it, a "piss stain." I mean fer chrissakes, James Taylor, the Bee Gees and ABBA have been inducted. Regarding Rush, the RNRHOF doesn't care too much for prog rock, be thankful they included Genesis (probably because of their 80s commercial drivel). How long before they honor Jethro Tull, Yes, King Crimson, Supertramp, etc? I wonder if I will even still be alive by the time they induct Cleveland's Pere Ubu.

Maybe this little note should be dedicated to gdiafante and his co-heart posters, or lack thereof. It should also be dedicated to all seniors, all of you who know seniors and all of you who hopefully one day becomes a loved seniors...., at least with the love of your children.

"Where is my SUNDAY paper?!"

The elderly irate customer calling the Herald newspaper office, loudly demanded to know where her Sunday edition was.

"Madam", said the Herald employee, "today is Saturday. The Sunday paper is not delivered until tomorrow, on SUNDAY".

There was quite a long pause on the other end of the phone, followed by a ray of recognition as she was heard to mutter,... "Well, damn, that explains why no one was at church either".

So keep that pea pod sized brain full of decent thought... if you have any available.

Ingleweird,

As a long time "progger" myself, I've got to agree with you. Progressive rock bands are glaringly missing from the list of Hall of Famer's. Yes practically invented the genre, so where are they? Hell, for what it's worth, forget about Yes.... Gentle Giant did what Yes only dreamed of.

By: Ingleweird on 6/21/11 at 4:34

But Gentle Giant is very very uncool. Don't get me wrong, I like GG, but they were one band of the 70s that would probably get you 1) kicked out of a party, or 2) not laid.

By: Ingleweird on 6/21/11 at 4:48

@NCP Ed.:
What figures support your assertion that any of the council races you highlighted are "tight?" Please publish LTEs again!

Hmmmm, that explains a lot. :-)
