Up for Debate: New charter school faces closure

Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at 12:06am

Would it be fair to close a newly opened charter school just months after opening? Have much advance noticed should parents receive in such a case? Does the situation suggest underlying problems with the charter system?

No comments allowed on firing a fireman on a freedom of speech issue?

The ACLU to defend [ NOT! ]....

By: dargent7 on 12/14/11 at 7:04

Boring topic.
Circular File News:
Sandusky's attorney, Joe Amendola, says all 10 boys are colluding, making the rapes up, in order to make money and get book deals.
There's a special place in hell for lawyers. Cochran is there as we speak.

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 7:13

Good morning, Nashville!

Another Charter School has failed? Sounds like somebody didn't do their homework. I blame the planners, not the teachers or the students....somebody made decisions based upon wishful thinking?

Good morning, Ben. The NCP Editors use this space for filler material, it seems. I suggested making this space a free and open debate forum; but that idea went nowhere fast.

Maybe the NCP head shed is deliberately trying to discourage the NCP regulars from posting here...putting dull, boring and arcane items up for debate is one way to reduce "hits"...Of course, fewer hits means lower ad revenues....somebody at the NCP 's top level needs to address this situation.

I saw the 'Homophobic remark" story...I'll go back , read it and comment here.

By: Kosh III on 12/14/11 at 7:20

What are you referrring to Ben? Can you link to a story? Thanks

By: dargent7 on 12/14/11 at 7:24

Front page: It was a Paramedic who was fired for posting homophobic comments on Facebook.
You see, Ben is a champion of human rights, as long as you're white and straight.

By: dargent7 on 12/14/11 at 7:28

EMT Kennedy referred to coworkers as "queers" and was suspended. The moron was in his Dept. Uniform on Facebook.
He still did it again. Good for the Fire Dept.
He gets an appeal. Stay tuned. He'll lose everything, including his pension.

By: govskeptic on 12/14/11 at 7:30

Charter Schools are having a hard time since most are start-ups and just
don't have all the I's dotted and T's crossed at this point. As to the Fireman
being fired for Facebook remark, I'll have to wait and see how Loner feels
so I can agree!

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 7:30

Yeah, Darge, Sandusky's lawyer used/abused the press corps that had gathered to cover the story inside the courtroom...turns out, the clever legal eagle waived his client's rights to the preliminary hearing, at the very last minute...then he worked the assembled news media for several hours on the courthouse steps. This was a highly publicized "press conference" designed to benefit Jerry Sandusky's defense. Did it work, or did it backfire?

Sandusky's lawyer claims that everybody in his own family hugs and kisses each other...Sandusky style...no biggie. Right. Cornholing kids in the shower must be an old family tradition in the lawyer's family too?

This arrogant and wise-assed lawyer for the alleged serial child rapist told reporters that if they believed McQueazy, then they should call 1-800-REALITY. According to news reports, that number is a number for homosexual phone sex, as it turns out. Sandusky's clever lawyer claims that he did not know that. Right.

This trial will probably be a long and ugly one....Sandusky could die of old age before he serves any prison time....since he is free on bail, Sandusky's lawyers will stall, stall and stall....appeal, appeal and appeal.

Sandusky's wife should also be on trial, IMO...she was making milk and cookies for the kids in the kitchen, meanwhile her sick hubby is sodomizing the kids in the basement. She claims that she did not hear their screams for help.......git a rope!

By: dargent7 on 12/14/11 at 7:34

I simply cannot believe in (almost) 2012, someone would think calling a "gay" person a "queer" and post it on Facebook, in your Dept. uniform, is "protected" under the 1st Amendment as "free speech".

By: Kosh III on 12/14/11 at 7:46

Thanks Ben, now that I'm awake I see the story.

He violated the policy of his employer, this does not affect the freedom of political speech; he could have stood up in his loving Christian church and spewed all the poison he wished but instead he made it appear that he was speaking on behalf of his employer.

Apples and oranges.

By: dargent7 on 12/14/11 at 7:47

Murdering your wife, like OJ did, is one thing.
A lot of felons in prison shot someone.
But sex offenders, child sex offenders, is abhorrent to even hardened criminals.
Many are saying he'll commit suicide.
He's 68 and either way, he'll never recover.

By: bfra on 12/14/11 at 7:49

I am not condoning what the fireman did, but d7 mentioned, probably losing his pension. There on the other hand is Torrence, an elected public official, that basically was stealing from taxpayers & drawing his pension . Go figure!

By: yogiman on 12/14/11 at 7:53

Just wondering: How would Kennedy feel and react if he was a "queer" and one of his co-workers made such comments about him?

All men are created equal... at least they used to be before they modernized impregnation methods and solutions... and you should treat all as you would like to be treated.

By: yogiman on 12/14/11 at 7:59

I learn many years ago you never make negative comments about your co-workers except in circumstances where absolutely appropriate (like when you're before a board for a reason), and that ain't on the sideline personally. Their personal life is their own. Keep you nose out of it.

Why would that man come to Kennedy's aid in a dangerous situation?

By: dargent7 on 12/14/11 at 8:03

This Sandusky lawyer is on the TODAY show. What a piece of garbage.
And, you can quote me.

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 8:09

Govskeptic is finally coming around...there IS hope for change.

Free speech is never free; that's true from several viewpoints, People have to fight for their right to free speech, that can be very costly, as we now see in Syria.

There are other costs involved with expressing oneself in public. One must bear the inevitable consequences of exercising the right of free speech.

This homo-hating EMT was officially warned, but he disobeyed a direct order. He exacerbated the problem by posting additional hateful remarks on his Facebook page...next to the photo of himself, dressed in his fireman's uniform. That's insubordination and he should walk the plank, IMHO.

Insubordination is a firing offense. Disobeying a direct order and making an ass of oneself on Facebook and bringing this sort of shame upon the fire dept., are good and reasonable reasons to terminate this fellow's employment, IMO....Fire the Fireman!

I am not a member of the Facebook community...when I read stories like this one, I'm glad that I have opted out of that self-incriminating, privacy-surrendering, ego-stroking and exploited posting community.

I do just fine without Facebook - the fast-growing, universal, comment board moderation and censoring service. If this site goes Facebook, the Lone One will move on.

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 8:18

Sandusky's lawyer has one of the worst comb-overs I've ever seen...barring Trump's comb-over, of course...a comb-over, to me, indicates an outsized ego and a self-delusionary personality.

My own hair is not that hot....very thin on top...I wear a do-rag to protect my scalp from the UV damage....it's cheaper than a weave, transplant, or a professionally produced custom hairpiece....and, IMO, it looks a lot more honest than a massive comb-over & hairspray affair....like Trump's.

Sandusky's lawyer is telling folks to call a homosexual phone sex phone number....yeah, this guy is some kind of fuitcake....he may have been banging Jerry's cast-offs. I mean, who would enthusiastically want to defend this creep? Another creep.

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 8:25

The homo-hating fireman should not lose his pension, IMO...that would be reneging on a 20 year-old bargain between employer and employee....the deal has been struck, the man served his time and he deserves his pension...but he has to be fired, IMO.

By: yogiman on 12/14/11 at 8:29

Unrealistically, like you, I'm not a Facebook fan either. But it seems somehow, not knowing what I was doing, my daughter got me on there. I never go to it but I occasionally see a comment where someone has read me there. If I could, I'd flush it down the commode, but as is, I just ignore it. I have no idea who those people are making those comments.

By: govskeptic on 12/14/11 at 8:31

Agreed on two grounds: 1) Wearing uniform in photo on Facebook. 2) Disobeying
direct order from employer about facebook remarks after previously doing so.

I am beginning to get concerned about Public employees receiving full pension
benefits no matter the reason for firing or being forced to resign. Won't go into
full details, but very recent Knoxville case where Circuit Court Judge's drug use
during gruesome murder resulting in retrial of 4 defendants and still gets to
keep $10,200. per month retirement (much of that amount donated by taxpayers)!
See Knoxnews.com for details. Extremely disturbing. Some or all of taxpayer
portion of retirement should be at risk in certain cases.

By: yogiman on 12/14/11 at 8:32

It doesn't take a combing to show ego. Look at your boy Barry. I can't remember a bigger ego in DC before him.

By: BigPapa on 12/14/11 at 8:41

That Knoxville case is crazier than any movie you'll see. You have one of the most disturbing cases to ever, it get very little media attention given the circumstances (just imagine if there were a racially based murder & torture and the victims were black), and then you find out the Judge was a client of the drug dealer on trial! Crazy.

By: yogiman on 12/14/11 at 8:42

Agreed, govskeptic,

They should eligible for their share of retirement funds only from their personal input portion of those funds.

By: dargent7 on 12/14/11 at 8:43

Yogi: b.s., per usual.
You've posted at The Tennessean under your real name, Paul Wade, and it's on Facebook.
Did your daughter do it for you?
And what in the hell does, "modernized impregnation" mean?
We're all still waiting for the definition of "ursurpation".
Loner and I are convinced you just can't spell "masturbation" because God forbids it.

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 8:50

Yeah, that egotistical master of usurpation is a Muslim, a communist and an Indonesian citizen, posing as an American Christian Democrat....the Republican Party and the US media are powerless to do anything about this "crime".....the sky is falling! We are doomed! All is lost!

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 8:53

Any URL for that Knoxville drug judge story?

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 8:56

Gov, 10K per month retirement? That's insane...please verify with a source.

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 9:01

Hey, I won the Time Person of the Year Award:

Hey, I may squeeze this and run for office....Senator Do-Rag, (I-NY)

By: Kosh III on 12/14/11 at 9:06

Torrance and this judge are 1% ers. They take care of their own, the rest of us can get fraked.

What enrages me is the fact that the head of TVA got a raise last year: 532,000, making his salary 3.5+ million per year.
I complained to Sen. Lame-ar, he said it's not Congress's job to oversee TVA. What a bunch of self-serving circle-the-wagon jerks.

Government "of the plutocrats, for the corporations, by the politicians."
Lincoln, TR. Dirksen
and Goldwater must be rolling in their grave over the way the GOP(and lots of Dems too) have handed power over to corporate masters.

By: yogiman on 12/14/11 at 9:10

usurpation is the act of a usurper to seize and hold (as office, place or powers before or without right). Barry Soetoro is the usurper of the Oval Office because he has taken that office illegally.

The simple fact he may have been born in Hawaii to a Kenyan father and American mother does not make him a natural born citizen. You need to study the laws a little better.

But let's give him the "natural born" status. When he was adopted by his Indonesian stepfather he lost his American citizenship. If, which we don't know if he did) renew his American citizenship after he reached adulthood it would be through naturalization. He could not gain his natural born status back.

Why do you think he is so secretive in who he is? Why does he refuse to show his college papers? Could it possibly be because it will show his being a student under foreign benefits?

What passport did he use to visit Pakistan when Pakistan would not allow an American citizen in the nation?

What form of brain are you using to accept someone as president of this nation when you don't even know what their name is for sure?

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 9:17

Another victim of free speech bites the dust:

Headline: Gingrich staffer resigns after Mormon comments

Of course, Newt probably agrees with the staffer, but Newt is smart enough to know when to throw a blabbing subordinate under the bus, in order to save himself. Newt knows self-preservation....talk about an outsized ego....Newt is a narcissist and a delusional wise-ass....just what the GOP base is calling for...it will be Newt vs Obama in 2012...unless more dirt comes out.

There is a Facebook comment board for that story...USA Today has farmed out their comment board feature to Facebook...this is a growing trend....soon Facebook will be able to monitor, moderate and censor all the mainstream media's comment boards....that will mark the end of the Golden Age of online posting, IMO....Big Brother will then be in charge of the debate rules, formats, space limits, HTML limits etc. By 2014, most comment boards will be operated by Facebook...1984 will have arrived...only thirty years later than expected.

By: govskeptic on 12/14/11 at 9:17

Entire horrid story on Knoxville case with background at: Knoxnews.com !
Includes the Judge's plea of guilty, and another Judge putting him on Probation.

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 9:24

Yogi started out OK this morning.....but by 9:10 Soetero Syndrome (SS) manifested itself...like a nervous tic; Yogi is powerless to stop saying, "USURPER"..."USURPER"..."USURPER"....SS is similar to Tourette Syndrom (TS) in that way.

Poor bastard..there is no cure...it's terminal.

By: BenDover on 12/14/11 at 9:28

I just posted it that way to be provocative. I'm not sure where this will land but there's a whole lot of teachers who could be canned for ranting about the Tea-Party being Nazis if this precedent holds.

Gay is not a protected class. 'Queer' is only derogatory if it's not in the title of an A&E series about gays, I guess.

Facebook is not public medium if it works as intended. If you overheard the guy in a restaurant talking about hating queers then you've got a basic equivalence. His job and his personal opinions are two different aspects of his life. The question is was he wearing his uniform when he made said offensive remark... did he start Nashville Firefighters against Queers... or was it in two separate contexts? "I'm a proud Firefighter." and then in a separate context "Queers suck" (ambiguity intended).

As a person who supports gay marriage I find it in poor taste; but I question the constitutionality of such a policy that suppress the sharing of personal opinion under the first amendment.

The more interesting aspect is that the comments on the thread were disabled by the City Paper editors.

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 9:28

Gov, I pulled up the Knoxnews site...I don't see the story...got any search terms, like the judge's name?

By: BenDover on 12/14/11 at 9:36

Was that the case where the 4 guys raped and tortured to death that young man and woman?

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 9:40

Ben wrote: "The more interesting aspect is that the comments on the thread were disabled by the City Paper editors"

Really? Where and when, Ben? I did not see a comment board for the NCP story on the fireman's firing.

The man has a right to express his opinions, IMO, but his employer also has the right to discipline him for insubordination.

Employers have the right, IMO, to demand that their employees adhere to corporate policy, or face termination. Free speech off the clock is not the same thing as free speech on the clock....and posting a photo of oneself in a company uniform, on Facebook, alongside hateful comments is cause for disciplinary action, IMO.

I remember that when I joined the US Army, a drill Sergeant advised us that the Bill of Rights applied to civilians, not US soldiers....I dunno if he was right on that, or not....but I took his advice seriously. Same thing goes for any public employee, I suppose...at least when on the clock, or in uniform....that's part of the employment agreement...it's a legal contract. Those who do not wish to work under such conditions are not being forced to do so.

By: Kosh III on 12/14/11 at 9:41

From the Gingrich article
"A recent survey by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life showed white evangelical Protestants are more likely to believe that Mormonism is not Christianity. "

It is definitely NOT Christianity. The Utah version of LDS is polytheistic.

In a funeral sermon Smith preached a few months before his murder, he said he
would explain how the world began" ...the king of the gods called a council of the gods and said "let us make man in our own image."
They believe in 3 major deities: Jehovah, Jesus and Satan; they also believe if
they live good enough, they can eventually can work their way into godhood with their own private planet.
Not mention believing that god physically came down and knocked up Mary and more.

I don't care about personal beliefs; I'd vote for a capable LDS person; Romney is only capable of looking after himself and his 1% masters.

By: BenDover on 12/14/11 at 9:41

yep... damn.

By: Kosh III on 12/14/11 at 9:42

""USURPER"..."USURPER"..."USURPER"....SS is similar to Tourette Syndrom (TS) in that way."

Next comes "Exterminate! Exterminate! "

Supreme Dalek.

By: BenDover on 12/14/11 at 9:44

Facebook would span the gamut of the Fireman's life Loner.

It could be argued he was a proud Firefighter and proud queer hater in separate contexts... particularly since the Facebook forum is intended to be shared with friends only and not public sentiment.

By: bfra on 12/14/11 at 9:46

yogi should warn everyone, IF he really did attend some school, as to where & the name so parents would know NOT to send there children there.

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 9:48

Kosh, if Congress is not responsible for overseeing TVA, who in the hell is? Lamar is a tired war-horse? Put him out to pasture....he's shot.

By: yogiman on 12/14/11 at 9:51

Yes, I do post my comments in the Tennessean by my name, as do you, but I sure didn't know I was also posting it as Facebook.

How do I get out of that hole?

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 9:55

Well said, Kosh.

Bfra, Yogi's school house:

Ben, thanks for the URL..I'll go to it now, with trepidation...

By: bfra on 12/14/11 at 9:58

Kosh III - TVA also hands out those million dollar bonuses while crying for more money, all the while. Kilgore has received several.

By: jcdad2003 on 12/14/11 at 9:58

First, yes there is a problem with the charter school movement, if an totally independent auditor was to come in they would find several incidents of misapproprications of funds. Just like MNPS has been caught with federal grants, which has caused them to be listed as "high risk" by the state.

As for the EMT, if he doesn't have the common sense to not post attacks on facebook, then I am not sure he should be working to save lifes. There are better ways to get your message out other than Facebook where people make it their business to find ways to stir up needless trouble. But I wouldn't think some of you to understand this because you use this small circulated paper editor pages to spew your garbage. Most of the time there are good points made, but then you turn it into attacks on your fellow responders, or you fill with unneeded "trash" words.

As for the judge in Knoxville, he is just another example of how corrupt government has gotten. We need a political revolution from the local government up to the federal government. Problem is it will never happen because our society is full of people who put themselves first, which completely goes againts what an elected offical is suppose to do, they are suppose to put their constuients first.

I know will step down from my soap box and wait for the attacks.

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 9:58

It's not a hole, Yogi, it's a bear trap...you have been caught....too many pic-a-nic baskets were being usurped...Ranger Smith had to do something. The tranquilizer gun please....

By: Loner on 12/14/11 at 10:02

No attacks coming from here, jcdad...you have a point there...too many personal attacks here...stupid name-calling etc. It detracts from the discussion, IMO. Please hang out and comment further.

By: yogiman on 12/14/11 at 10:03

I actually feel sorry you and your co-posters on this site can accept a man as your President whom you know nothing about. I believe the factual knowledge portion of your IQs is missing.

I really don't know what kind of an idiocy factor you will feel next year when, I believe, it will all come out. I just call it "plum damn stupid" at the present time.

I could suggest you might read his book "Dreams from My Father", but then, it may tell you more about him than you would want to know. After all, he's you president, not mine.
