Up for Debate: Political ad effectiveness

Monday, September 24, 2012 at 2:54am

How much of an effect do political ads have on swaying your decision in an election? Are you turned off from a candidate because of negative ads? Have you ever felt distinctly swayed by an ad?

Political ads?
I just listen to the candidates speak.
Romney's 1 minute dissertation put a fork in him..."the 47%....".
He's not a man, "for the people".
He is a rich, white dude who wants car elevators in his CA beach front home.
Preferrably one's that can hold 4 Caddy's.

Good morning, Nashville.

Q:How much of an effect do political ads have on swaying your decision in an election?
A: Hopefully, not much....I like to dig deeper than that, before deciding.

Q: Are you turned off from a candidate because of negative ads?
A: Absolutely.

Q: Have you ever felt distinctly swayed by an ad?
A: Not to my knowledge.

By: Rasputin72 on 9/24/12 at 5:22

I realize that candidates must constantly keep their names before the public but I am not sure that the return on investment is nil to negative.

What the 47% want to know is what you can do for me. The productive class wants to know how much are you going to cost me by being elected.

Since New York is a solidly blue state, we do not see a lot of political ads in this state. People who live in one of the few "swing states" are bombarded with political ads...that's just the way that the major political parties, the "donors" and the media like it....Democracy Lite.

Functional collusion between the parties, the Electoral College system, gerrymandering and political "donations" have buggered our system to the point that our elections are little more than theater. The product is unfit for export, but good enough for America.....it's bread & circus time.

Political ads mean nothing to me. The money spent on a political ad could be donated to their church or charity.I determine if a candidate is running for the office legally and if they're "the man" for the job.

I watch how they speak. You can tell if they're lying and I can't stand a liar in office.

Rasp schlepps in the "makers versus the takers" canard....like a true troll, he has a single issue obsession.

Rasp is up early...liquor stores are not open yet....he's got the shakes?

They really don't show many national ads here, maybe on a cable news station, but I ignore them, or get a good laugh.

Now, when we go to Iowa, for every normal commercial there are five political ads. I don't know why the suicide rate isn't higher there...

Political ads that are the most affective are those that appear on the Jerry
Springer show, Maury, General Hospital, and others appearing before the
least informed and least interested in this country. Your negative ad might
just be instead the truth from my candidate or vice versa. Of course, with
this President, any ad that points out a flaw is considered very negative,
after all, he been anointed "The One."

Sarah Palin advised Mitt to "go rogue"...a man sinking in quicksand should not struggle, that just makes it worse....Sarah did not throw Mitt a lifeline...she threw him a punchline.

And John McCain is trying to persuade veterans to vote for the draft-dodging, trigger-happy neocon. I think that the North Vietnamese actually did rob McCain of his soul.....apparently misery loves company, McCain wants young Americans to suffer like he did....he is a bitter, vengeful racist....a perfect representative for the state of Arizona.

"...I watch how they speak, and then know if they are lying..." Really?
Did you pick up on the biggest lies of them all when GW Bush said Iraq had centrifuges, yellow cake, enriched uranium, and WMD's?
Did you "know" when his daddy said the 1st Gulf War, "wasn't about "the oil", it was, "naked aggression".
People like you are the reason America is in the tank. It isn't because Obama is from Kenya. It's the absolute stupidity exemplified by people like you.
Go back to bed, Wade, you don't know shit.

The Titans squeezed out a victory in OT...and the Bills won ...we should all be in relatively good spirits this morning....lots of great games yesterday...I went to a sports bar to watch the action....must have been 30 TV sets going simultaneously, what a country!

Ended up doing shots...(my birthday).....a friend's wife bought me one and of course, I had to buy back....we caught a buzz....but I'm a little woozy this morning....this here latte ought to help....

The irony is that it's your side that keeps annointing him. Rational people laugh at you.

By: dargent7 on 9/24/12 at 6:05

I had $10. bucks on that game, too.
Seems the full moon came a week early for most NFL games.
Bellichick grabs a sub-ref after a blown call...30 penalties?
The FG was OFF and outside the goalpost.
Even our own Brionas missed two FG's that he usually does in his sleep.

By: yogiman on 9/24/12 at 6:07

Well dargent7,

We have 45 days to find out which one of us is the biggest.

I didn't hear the "speech" you said Bush made about the "1st Gulf War. I did hear him mention a "one world government".

But anyone so willing to back and vote for someone who refuses to prove their Constitutional eligibility exposes their idiocy. So welcome to the club, you have a lot of co-idiots on this site.

Sorry dargent7,

I left "idiot" off of biggest.

By: gdiafante on 9/24/12 at 6:15

Darge, that kick was good. Al Michaels explained...the posts extend forever, but if it's above the posts, it isn't reviewable.

The NFL has to settle with the refs, this is getting ridiculous. Heyward-Bey got the crown of the helmet to the chin and no call...taken off on a stretcher...Romo got one to the chops too, no call...Schaub had a piece of his ear removed, yep, you guessed it, no call.

I lost count of the "defenseless receiver" hits that weren't called.

Someone's going to get killed. Players know they aren't calling them.

Gd is right, if the players sense that they can get away with unsportsmanlike conduct, the game could quickly deteriorate into a free-for-all. Flacco is right, the integrity of the game is at stake.....the Commish needs to cut the union-busting BS and get the real refs back out on the field.

By: yogiman on 9/24/12 at 6:24

Too many people vote for the candidate the media polls say is leading the race because they want to say they voted for the winner. Everyone hates to vote for a loser.

Maybe the polls should be eliminated and let the voters make their own decision of who to vote for. Who really knows if the polls are accurate?

By: Loner on 9/24/12 at 6:26

Replacement players failed and replacement refs are also failing..you get what you pay for...the fans are not being fooled....and the players are not being fooled either...the owners and the Commish are fooling themselves.

By: dargent7 on 9/24/12 at 6:26

Ok, all I saw was what you did on tv.
The PLAY that really did freak me out was when a Titan runs up to a Lion after he caught the ball and just stood there, and stripped the ball from his arms and ran it back 73 yards.?! WTF?
These sub-refs suck.

By: dargent7 on 9/24/12 at 6:38

I was in San Diego in 1991, driving on the 805, by Miramar- Top Gun, when G HW Bush came on the radio/ tv and said he launched an invasion of Iraq because Saddam invaded Kuwait. I thought, "It's the late 90's, no way can America go to war..." I was wrong.
He clearly stated the United States could not tolerate, "naked aggression". "It's not about the oil". I thought, Really? Are you serious?
So, the USA embarked on, "The Highway of Death" marching toward Baghdad, when CNN showed the graphic pictures of all the dead bodies lying on the side of the road. These assholes in Washington knew America couldn't stomach it.
The US killed over 150,000 Iraqis because Saddam killed and gassed 300 of his own people.
To a Republican, it seemed a fair exchange, at the time.

Darge, I liked the 27 yard personal foul...

Political ads, probably work in local races. New candidates are trying to establish an identity, and usually start with an ad posing with their families. Tad and Susan sitting on one's lap, somehow establishes gravitas.
The ads eventually turn to: ''I'm a wonderful, but my opponent however, is an arsehole.''

By: slacker on 9/24/12 at 7:06

New movie, already in the can. ''The Replacement Refs'', starring Keanu Reeves, and Gene Hackman. Directed by Cecil B.Demille, with a cast of thousands.

By: parnell3rd on 9/24/12 at 7:11

Political ads are Propaganda.

By: Captain Nemo on 9/24/12 at 7:12

There are not any campaign ads any more. What is being shown on the tube now is more like soap operas or gossip bitch fights.

By: slacker on 9/24/12 at 7:25

What came first.. political ads or propaganda?

By: Captain Nemo on 9/24/12 at 7:29

slacker-

If that is true then we will be watching one Super Bowl hearing another at the same time.

Bull Crap came first.

By: pswindle on 9/24/12 at 8:33

I can't stand to watch the ads. The Kock Brothers are throwing away a lot of money because I don't think they are as effective as they were at one time.

By: Captain Nemo on 9/24/12 at 8:37

The Kockers are trying to become Americas first Kings.

Libya: Just another gov't cover up gone bad. This administration lied about the attacks for a week before they finally called it what it was. A planned Terrorist attack.
How come Valerie Jarrett gets full armed protection? But our Ambassador's overseas do not?
I bet all the worlds leaders in NYC this week have armed guards while on American Soil!
Hope and change? What has changed? More debt! More American's dead! More gov't control! A stimulas bill that relaxed the rule's for gov't assistance! Billions of taxpayer money given to failing companies!
Even in Tennessee, your finally reqiured to prove your looking for a job for unemployment. Why does positive change take so long? Politicians, that is why. Corruption in politics.

You know, P3, I asked you last week what exactly the plan should be regarding the protests, since it's obvious that anything the current administration does won't satisfy you.

So, what exactly would you do?

By: Captain Nemo on 9/24/12 at 9:28

If p3 every knew what he \/ she was talking about, it might be someone worth debating, however it is trying to be the troll under the bridge number one.
