Up for Debate: Pre-debating the debate

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 12:26am

Ahead of Wednesday's first round in the presidential debates, what are your predictions of what the big talking points will be both during and after the debate? Which candidate do you think will come out on top?

To repeat an oft used quote, "It's the economy, stupid." The state of the economy, unemployment, taxes, all of these issues will fall under that broad heading, and with both sides blaming the other. The facts, however, readily apparent to everyone, will boil down to the Republicans having thrown every roadblock possible in the way of President Obama's efforts.

I believe foreign policy, particularly in the Middle East might become a major topic as people remember the debacle of Willard's campaign trip embarrassing America at the Olympics and raising concerns in Israel. (Curious how the Israeli leadership seems to be distancing itself from Willard.)

All in all, this has the possibility for Willard and the Republican Party to provide endless fodder for stand up comics across the nation.

I can't wait.

By: Ummm... on 10/3/12 at 5:38

After Willard the Cigar Store Indian manages to get through the evening without drooling on himself or barfing on stage (like Justin Bieber), the protectors of the oligarchy (faux news, Limbaugh, et al) will loudly proclaim that he won the debate hands down. I can almost hear the sheep and their predictable "baas" now.

I think that the questions will likely be softballs, pre-approved by each camp. If you know the questions beforehand, it's a lot easier to seem like you know what you're talking about. I don't think there's really a subject that we don't know where each candidate stands so it's probably going to come down to likeability. That's why it's more important to Romney than to Obama.

I'm not going to watch the debate, I'll read The Economist blog tomorrow...that's entertaining stuff. As for tonight, I'm watching paint dry.

By: Loner on 10/3/12 at 6:23

Good morning, Nashville.

Q: What are your predictions of what the big talking points will be both during and after the debate?

A: No doubt, Defense, Israel & Energy will be on the agenda....and lip service will be paid to our economy, as both men make promises they cannot keep. The "fiscal cliff" may come up in the conversation....or not.

Q:Which candidate do you think will come out on top?

A: The biggest winners will be the media outlets that televise the show. Obama will probably mop the floor with Willard....watch for telltale signs of Mitt sweating bullets....I expect that at least one gaffe will be made in these debates....people want to see a major screw-up on the stage; they may get their wish.....tune in tonite for "Gaffe-ing with the Goofs".

By: govskeptic on 10/3/12 at 6:48

It's my impression that the agenda is suppose to be domestic issues only
tonight, but that could go in any direction. The President's supporters have
accused Romney of about everything, so it might be time for Romney to put
in a few personal zingers of his own to Mr. Obama (there's lots of fodder to
work with). As has been shown on some occasions the President, like
most narcissist, is very thin skinned and it shows all over his face when he
becomes mad over a questions. Don't know if that can be coached out of
him or not. Like working in the Oval office, he has indicated preparing for
these debates is "a drag".

There will be many voters that already "know all" that will watch anything
other than the debates. They already know which candidate they would
rather have babysit their children. As if that's anyway to select someone
for any office other than maybe the White House dog trainer, which currently
is occupied at over 100K per year. May the best Royal win.

By: gdiafante on 10/3/12 at 6:50

Well, gov, how is voting for someone because they'd be good watching their kids any better than voting for someone solely because they aren't the other guy? It's pretty much how Obama got elected in the first place, it's how Bush got re-elected too.

Presidential races have turned into voting for the lesser of two evils. In other words, who you think would do less harm. Sad but true. That's what happens in an absence of leadership.

By: yogiman on 10/3/12 at 7:49

My first question would be: Mr. Obama, you insist I show my tax records for the past 11 years, yet you refuse to show a certified copy of your birth certificate, your official college records, the passport you used in 1981 to enter Pakistan, who the Social Security number you are using was issued to in Connecticut or your registration card number.

Can you explain to the public why you refuse to let your papers be seen? You show the public your official papers and I'll show you my tax records. Fair enough?

By: bfra on 10/3/12 at 7:51

Loner - You are right, the media outlets are the biggest winners. IMO, this debate will not change anyone's mind about voting, it is for show.

By: Loner on 10/3/12 at 7:53

Gov: I hope that Mitt tries doing schtick, as you suggest...those "zingers" can backfire....remember when Mitt challenged Newt, or one of the other also-rans, to a $10,000 bet? That zinger was not funny....Mitt may not have learned from that experience...he's a natural wise-ass...IMO, the nation is not in the mood for a wise-assed POTUS.

Where does all the campaign money actually go?

Most of the money that the Parties, the PACs, the Super PACs, the lobbyists, the special interests etc. pump into these campaigns goes primarily to the major US media...radio, TV and print....that's the primary reason that we do not see a lot of reform-minded investigative journalism or editorials; the media do not wish to bite the hands that are feeding them....it's all about the bottom line.

Zingers are remembered, policy details are not. That's why Romney will go for zingers. Style over substance...and I'm sure people will eat it up. With a national attention span of a few seconds, that's all he needs.

By: Loner on 10/3/12 at 8:11

(click) New day, same old troll droppings....if only they had some redeeming social value...Amish road apples, for example, make good fertilizer... troll droppings, however, are toxic.

By: BigPapa on 10/3/12 at 8:12

I predict that all the GOP will think Romeny won the debate, all Dems will fawn over Obama's fabulous performance.

By: Loner on 10/3/12 at 8:15

CAUTION: Hurled Zingers Can Result In Loss Of Fingers.

By: Loner on 10/3/12 at 8:16

Papa, I agree with your analysis.

By: bfra on 10/3/12 at 8:22

Mitt could have his dog come on stage in a custom made parka to show he is trying to make aments. LOL

By: bfra on 10/3/12 at 8:23

s/h/b - amends

By: Captain Nemo on 10/3/12 at 8:24

I think BigPapa is on target, but it will be the centrist that makes the difference.

By: yogiman on 10/3/12 at 8:31

Toxic only to the people who aren't interested in proof,Loner. I'll repeat, give me proof I'm wrong and I'll apologize and shut up. But you nor any of your fellow posters who are so willing to accept a man as our president whom you don't refuse to offer proof other than "I think" he's eligible. As long as you make your comments you can't back up except to say "I think", I will continue showing my beliefs, and offering proofs, also.

Our difference is; I have offered facts as proof, but you haven't. Why?

I do have the same rights on this site as you, don't I?

By: govskeptic on 10/3/12 at 8:34

Loner: Romney's silly bet was with Perry, and it was the amount that became
the stinger, not so much that a wager was attempted. But I would challenge
your statement on Romney being a wise@ss, at least in so far that he's any
bigger one than the President himself shares that same gene in spades.

If no one had ever heard of the word elitist. One week of reading the comments on this City Paper forum would certainly destroy any notion about all people are created equal.

That is true Rasputin, not all are insane lying monks.

Moderator: Jim Lehrer (Host of NewsHour on PBS) - Topic: Domestic policy
Moderator: Martha Raddatz (ABC News Chief Foreign Correspondent) - Topic: Foreign and domestic policy
Moderator: Candy Crowley (CNN Chief Political Correspondent) - Topic: Town meeting format including foreign and domestic policy
Moderator: Bob Schieffer (Host of Face the Nation on CBS) - Topic: Foreign policy

The moderators tell the tale. They are all libs. Martha Raddatz will moderate the VP and Ryan. The rest are Obama and Romney.

I suspect also that the Town meeting format will be filled with implants from the libs asking all types of tough questions for Romney and they will ask Obama such questions as: How did you enjoy your latest party with Jz and Bounce? Or Which show did you like best to be on: The View, or Jimmy Kimmel? Or What are you getting Michelle for this latest anniversary?

The "debates" will be another Obama debacle, especially with left wing nut moderators and left wing nut town hall attendees!

By: budlight on 10/3/12 at 8:47

Oops! Left out a question. When you were on the View, Did Whoopee let another Whoop fly?

Romney’s silly bet showed that Mitt considered $100 has chump change.

Loner.........I can understand the "simple six" allowing Yogi to take command of this forum but you are far too bright to keep responding. Even the clicks affirm your notice.

The clicks acknowledge that the posts are not read and simple over look. If your inflated ego was not blinding you, you would have understood this.

Nemroid, You people are so jealous. It's just proof that the libs are all wrapped up in themselves.

OK, another question: Mr. President, did you have a 32 ounce supersize Coke with your 3/4 pound burger smothered with cheese, onions and catsup with that double order of fries?

Or did you stick to Bloomberg's health guidelines and just have a bottle of water with some carrott sticks and cucumber slices, along with a few tasteless, calorie-less rye crackers?

Ding, ding, ding: Times up. President took too long to formulate lie.

Jim Lehrer moderated one of the 2008 debates as well, and probably
did the best job of the lot. I do remember seeing him in an interview
later discussing his performance and stating the ups and downs of
being a moderator. In that interview, among other things, at the end
stating he would never do another. Don't know if the pay is good and
needed or the mission, but He's back!

By: Captain Nemo on 10/3/12 at 9:11

I’m Jealous of what, you? bud get over yourself.

There is nothing about you that would interest me, except maybe removing something I step in.

Nemo - Raspy brings up his short comings & hang ups & pretends they pertain to someone else.

Get over yourself nemroid. Jealous of Raspy, Gov, Yogi, or anyone who challenges you successfully. You are a person who just can't stand it if someone differs with your opinion and that is plain to see in your disrespectful responses. You and others.

But I come on this site because you and your ilk are amusing. And it's easy to provoke you, or haven't you noticed? Duh? How could you? Your head is buried too deep in the sand box!

bud; yogi is a liar and a coward. Rasputin is a phony. There is nothing for me to be jealous of. Gov is a good person that I don’t always agree with. There is no need for me to be jealous of gov.

You come to this site, because you are lonely and not getting any at home.

You children are showing your intelligence too much. Or should I say; lack of it?

Here you are, in the South. All Tennesseans I presume. But you are following the lead of a man from New York.

It's funny, when Loner isn't on line, very little is "said". And every time he makes a "statement" you other children side with him.

Heck, you're retired, Loner. Why don't you move to Tennessee and become part of the physical group. Real estate has dropped in prices lately. Just keep yo Nu Yawk home for a summer vacation.

Come on down and join the inhumanity club.
