Up for Debate: Register's State of Metro Schools

Friday, March 9, 2012 at 1:39am

In his State of Metro Schools address, Dr. Jesse Register asks for investments "to increase pay for teachers and fix dilapidated schools." Is this another hint at a property tax increase? Should taxpayers pony up to such goals?

No money no fix.

Southern Public Schools are failing?!

Hey, when the South rejected the Civil Rights Law, in 1964, and opted for white Christian schools, the decline of Southern public schools began in earnest. You folks brought all of this decay and waste down upon yourselves and nobody feels very sorry for what you did to yourselves. Hate-based social movements usually end up like this.

Suffer!

By: dargent7 on 3/9/12 at 5:51

No, Loner..it wasn't the "White Christian schools" that lead to our downfall, it's the useless, needless wars. And I'm not even from around here.

By: Loner on 3/9/12 at 6:00

Like the Civil War? Yeah, that was needless and useless...and it left the vengeful KKK terrorists in charge of the defeated Confederacy....they took out their frustrations on the victims...the Negroes. The segregationists are still carrying a torch for the old days....they never repented....their still-segregated schools are turning out an inferior product....they are getting precisely what they deserve, IMO.

By: Loner on 3/9/12 at 6:13

The hate that existed in the Old Confederacy must have been beyond measurement and beyond human conception. After nearly 150 years, the South still cannot accept the idea that by every standard, blacks are equal in stature to whites..if not superior to whites....blacks, as a people, are not the sub--species of humanity that Southern Preachers and Politicians have been claiming for centuries.

By: dargent7 on 3/9/12 at 6:17

I was referring to Vietnam and the 20 year invasion of Iraq, Afghanistan. On the GOP radar is Syria and Iran. Those ass-holes will invade Iran, costing another $1. trillion. And won't blink an eye.

By: govskeptic on 3/9/12 at 6:19

Appears that Loner has all the answers from his NY basement on another
Metro problem. We've got to recruit this guy down for a morality discussion!

By: Rasputin72 on 3/9/12 at 7:04

LONER......The white chiristian schools were created to expose why there was such a thing as a "private school"

Once you remove the children of value oriented parents from the Metro Nashville Public School system you expose why this country is failing and why a socialist like Barack Hussein Obama can be elected with ease.
\
The people you were cheated by the rejection of the 1954 Supreme court ruling were the working lower class. Many of these children have wound up falling to the valueless level of the underclass. 65% of the Metro school children are on a free lunch program courtesy of the taxes paid for by the parents of children in private schools.

I don't think people like you have to worry much about those of us who have escaped thus far. The breeding and welfare have continued to the point that we are outnumbered in national voting booth. Our only chance is to control the house and possibly the senate on a national basis. I listened to a speech by Maxine Waters and any optimism I might have had was squashed.

By: Captain Nemo on 3/9/12 at 7:05

Loner is not far off the line. I live here all my life and the schools only get worse. It started back when Fulton was Mayor, he did not believe in raisin taxes. The school, libraries and parks fell in disarray and have never recovered.

By: treehugger7 on 3/9/12 at 7:12

By all means, we must have a raisin tax!

By: bfra on 3/9/12 at 7:21

The downfall of schools, started with bussing. Not bussing for transportation, but bussing for intergration. Then they lowered the learning level so more could graduate. Today, most neighborhoods are intergrated and the bussing continues, all the while complaining about the cost of fuel & no money for schools. Bring back neighborhood schools!

By: Ummm... on 3/9/12 at 7:22

Anything but a pole tax (we don't want to penalize strippers).

By: Rasputin72 on 3/9/12 at 7:25

Treehugger.......I hardly think that with all of the comments yet to come that anyone will be able to top your comment about the "raisin tax" Beautiful, just beautiful.

By: Captain Nemo on 3/9/12 at 7:25

I have been yogi, by treehugger. Oh the shame. lol

By: Rasputin72 on 3/9/12 at 7:26

Bfra......You may have made the most astute comment of the day thus far. Busing probably and most likely was the juggernaught that started the decline of the public school system.

By: Loner on 3/9/12 at 7:37

If our schools taught history correctly and objectively, then future generations would be reluctant to go to war. As it is now, the past wars are explained away as being necessary, justified and unavoidable.

Present and Future wars are being justified using the Hebrew Bible and Herzl's Der Judenstaat. Again, ignorance plays a role in this....great schools produce great citizens.....lousy schools produce a stupefied, gullible, docile and ignorant population.

Racism has existed since time began and it will remain on this earth until this earth is abolished.

Loner, you speak of racism in the South but fail to mention it in the North, West, East or middle America. You means racism exists only in the South? Gimme a break, Yankee.

Why is there a black only committee in Congress today? Are they not racists? Isn't racism the cause Rep. Cohen was denied membership when he went to Congress representing a district in Memphis that is primarily back residents; because he is white? If there was a white only committee formed in Congress you could bet they would be called racists. But by whom? There is more racism in the Negro race today than anyone ever imagined it would be. And the biggest racist in the nation today is the man you call your President.

I say; okay, there's been as many decades of black racism in the USA since the end of the Civil War as there was white racism at the beginning of that war, so now we're equal fellow Americans, so how about flushing racism down the toilet.

No man has ever decided what race he would be born in to. Only God made that choice, so accept it and live your life as he set for you.

By: bfra on 3/9/12 at 7:41

Anytime you bus any child from 1 side of town to another, It is not beneficial to the child, & does not offer parents the opportunity to participate in school activities, most times. But this is just 1 of many, the Supreme Court should have kept their nose out of.

By: Loner on 3/9/12 at 7:41

Thanks, Gov, for your continued support.

By: dargent7 on 3/9/12 at 7:45

Busing? That was the downfall of American civilation? Not Vietnam? Not Iraq? Not Afghanistan?
Sure, helping to integrate America, the have's and the have not's, blacks and whites, equates to carpet bombing and invading foreign countries, 6,000 miles away.
Any wonder why America is $16.5 trillion in the red, bankrupt, and the laughing stock of the planet?

By: yogiman on 3/9/12 at 7:46

I think history will show the education level went down the hill when the Department of Education was formed with the reason all children should be taught the same subjects.

That's when the communist party started up the stairs in the White House.

By: BenDover on 3/9/12 at 8:25

The problem with the Nashville schools is that employee rewards are not indexed to results. That plus wealth flight to the surrounding counties. A tax increase is just going to make that problem worse.

Loner's pointed and vehement criticisms about racism are as offensives as they are ridiculous.

By: Captain Nemo on 3/9/12 at 8:35

By: yogiman on 3/9/12 at 7:41
Racism has existed since time began and it will remain on this earth until this earth is abolished.

Once again our resident Hysteria(sic)has got it all wrong. If he is a man of faith as he claims to be, then he would know that since time began, there was only Adam and Eve. This would mean that there was only one race.

Now which is it oh yogi of mindless connection. Is it Darwin or Creationism?

By: Captain Nemo on 3/9/12 at 8:39

When it comes to their children people aren't interested in sacrificing for the public good, or to make someone feel good about themselves in Washington DC. They do not want their kids exposed to the under class, they do not want their kids threatened, or held back by this group.
Like so many enlightened Liberals, they chose to send their kids to school with "people like us" i.e. people that have the same education, back ground, and values. Loner may scream racism, but most would just call it sound parenting.

Like so many "liberal ideals" they're really great and noble..... for someone else.

By: bfra on 3/9/12 at 9:04

Any where you go on this Earth, there is some form of racism. Here in the States, I have found the South not to be any more racist than the North. Some call them "yankees", some of them call us "hillbillies". Me, I like "boot scootin' boogie", so I guess I am a "redneck".

By: Rasputin72 on 3/9/12 at 9:35

BigPapa.......This of course is a delicate subject because it reveals the split among Americans over the "culture" of America which cannot be excluded when it comes to education. I have tried many times in conversations to express what you posted at 9 AM. Never have I or anyone else been able to say what you said with so much eloquence and respect.

What we have obviously is a clash of cultures.

By: Moonglow1 on 3/9/12 at 10:25

Moonglow1: Since when has Register been "pro public" school. He is the Charter School champion. The champion of waste your tax money on for profit Charters who pocket taxpayer funding, pack up, and leave town. So yes I do wonder what is behind Register's conversion to helping public schools.

By: Loner on 3/9/12 at 12:44

Ben Dover wrote, Loner's pointed and vehement criticisms about racism are as offensives as they are ridiculous.

Pointed? Perhaps. Vehement? No way. Ridiculous? Hardly.

Big Papa has a point, lots of "liberals" send their own kids to private schools...hypocrisy is bipartisan.....btw, my kids all went to public schools.

By: Loner on 3/9/12 at 1:30

Here's a thoughtful look at racism in the public schools in the 21st century, right here in the USA:

http://prospect.org/article/new-school-racism-jena-and-beyond

If I offended Ben Dover and others, that was not my intent. And yes, racism is not confined to the Old Confederacy states....some :liberals" can be terribly racist; I never claimed any moral high ground for "the North" and the "liberals".

By: BigPapa on 3/9/12 at 2:24

I think it's the underclass "values" (or is it a lack of values??) that is the most frustrating thing about integration in the US over the past what 50+ years.

There's an entire class of people who see the world completely backwards. That was a nice article Lonar, but really.. the stats mean nothing too me.
If 1 in 10 black men go to prison it's not because of a grand white conspiracy, it's because they're committing crimes.

If you dont want to go to jail, dont commit crime, dont embrace "gangstas" into your culture. Dont ridicule those that are doing "the right thing", dont accept 80% of births to single mothers... That "culture" is sick and ailing and it needs to heal itself. Whitey cant do that.

By: BenDover on 3/9/12 at 2:35

I never claimed any moral high ground for "the North" and the "liberals".

I'd recommend re-reading your posts there, friend.

By: yogiman on 3/9/12 at 2:38

Loner,

I think everyone with common sense would agree slavery should never have been allowed in this country simply based on it's founding.

But, politics is politics. And once the "majority" ruled and Negroes were allowed to be brought into this country as slaves, there has been prejudice on both sides of that fence ever since.

By: pswindle on 3/9/12 at 2:41

It is going to take more than Register to fix the problem. He is slowly destroying the system.

By: bfra on 3/9/12 at 3:25

pswindle - You got that right! He has done more harm than good, even with all the money spent on "out of State" organizations to help him.

Read something about Karl's brotherinlaw being in the Charter School business, now there shouldn't be anything tricky about that, huh? Karl is really pushing the charter schools.
