Up for Debate: The replacement refs

Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at 12:51am

There's been some growing chatter in the world of NFL fans about the replacement referees and the job they are, or aren't, doing. How do you feel about the job the replacements have done? Have you seen blatant instances of either loss of control of the game or worse-than-normal blown calls? Do you worry that the NFL isn't too concerned about bringing back the regulars because the league knows the viewers are still going to watch either way?

Best characterization of these guys is they're, "substitute teachers".
Remember them? No respect and nothing got done. You goofed off, hoping you wouldn't get caught. NFL players are all in the 5th grade anyway, so they just hope not to get caught.
Go Detroit this Sunday!

The extremely large number of reviews that have been
taking place has sure thrown off the tempo of many games
I've watched. Bad calls being made are exceeds by even
more infractions that are not called on some of the leagues
most notorious teams.

By: gdiafante on 9/19/12 at 4:58

They're a joke. I don't blame them, they're doing the best they can. I blame the NFL. Darge is right, subs never have control. That game on Monday night had a first quarter that took one hour because the refs couldn't get control of the game. At least one should have been ejected because of throwing a punch and they're allowing all kinds of contact for the receivers/DB's.

They need to fix this before someone gets hurt...and so we can watch a game that has a good flow and every little infraction doesn't have to be reviewed...it's ridiculous.

RIP to Steve Sabol...the man really responsible for the NFL being the most popular of American professional sports. How many kids, when playing football, were humming some of that great NFL Films music and narrating the action as John Facenda...

I know I did.

By: dargent7 on 9/19/12 at 5:24

Monday Night was a disgrace. (no more than the Titans in San Diego on Sunday).
The penalties and flags throw are so subjective.
"Ruffin' the Passer, Personal Fouls, illegal formation, illegal motion, too many players on the field, etc.
It's endless. And these "subs" are expected to know all this?
My sub in 8th grade didn't know what a function (Fx) was.
Come to think of it, I didn't and still don't.

Blame the NFL? Okay, what else is involved with the NFL? Unions? People? Greedy referees! OWS should protest those greedy 1% referees!

By: parnell3rd on 9/19/12 at 5:49

"The trick is figuring out how do we structure government systems that pool resources and hence facilitate some redistribution of wealth. Because, I actually believe in Redistribution." Barrack Husseine Obama 1998

President Obama's Unemployment rate, above 8%, longer than any other President since 1948.

By: Loner on 9/19/12 at 5:59

Good morning, Nashville.

The NFL is engaging in union-busting....under-trained scab referees are faking it.....the coaches and players are taking advantage of the situation and the fans are not being fooled...you get what you pay for and the NFL's decision to try to save a few dollars (relatively) was a bad call...fans should throw the flag and boycott the scabby sham....all the NFL "records" broken this year should have an asterisk next to the stat in the record books.

By: Loner on 9/19/12 at 6:01

One might say that the NFL has decided to go with deregulation in 2012.....we know what deregulation did to the US economy and we can see what it is doing to the nation's favorite pro sport.....stand by for melt down.....the NFL is penny wise and dollar foolish on this deal.

By: Loner on 9/19/12 at 6:06

NFL players should refuse to cross the picket lines, after all , they are also unionized....and union members should refuse to watch or attend these scab games, IMO. Solidarity between unions was once strong in the US, but those days are long gone...thanks to the constant union-bashing on the right-wing hate shows.

By: gdiafante on 9/19/12 at 6:10

Right on queue, Parnell...that's the new GOP talking point, since Romney got dinged for a video, let's show one of Obama.

Now, does Romney really want to play the "Look what you said in 19__" game? The Dems will have an absolute field day...lol

And by the way, any tax is a redistribution, dumbass.

By: yogiman on 9/19/12 at 6:10

Referees are like all other lines of work; you have experts, good ones, 'mediocres' and some in the wrong damn business..., and you don't know which kind you have until you hire them.

By: Rasputin72 on 9/19/12 at 6:13

I think the replacement referees are performing far better than I exected.

Then again I am accustomed to the bludgeoning of the productive class by Barack Hussein Obama

By: Loner on 9/19/12 at 6:17

An 8% unemployment rate looks good to the Palestinians....thanks to the US and Israel, more than half of the Palestinian workers are jobless....the Palestinian "economy" is in tatters and that's just the way that their brutal oppressors want to keep it.....under bishop Romney their hardships would increase exponentially.....and still some wonder why we are hated in so much of the world.

By: gdiafante on 9/19/12 at 6:17

I'm not sure what you exected, but the consensus is that they're not, raspy. In fact, the only ones who can't see it is NFL management.

And, as Steve Young said, they really don't care. Regardless, people will continue to watch games on TV, go to games, follow their team and buy merchandise.

By: yogiman on 9/19/12 at 6:17

I agree, Loner, no more phonies in the White House... so let's get the one in there out asap.

By: Ummm... on 9/19/12 at 6:18

Roger Goodell must be a Teapublican- he pays lip service to "protecting the players," but allows these second-rate refs to endanger then players with their inexperience and fear of "making the right call." That kind of shameless hypocrisy has to be learned somewhere, and what better place than pinnacle of hypocrisy itself?

By: Loner on 9/19/12 at 6:19

These scab refs are members of the "productive class"? Apparently, too much Grey Poupon causes brain damage. And it's all Hussein Obama's fault?

By: Captain Nemo on 9/19/12 at 6:19

I don’t have an opinion about the this subject, but p3 is picking his nose so early in the morning.

By: Ummm... on 9/19/12 at 6:20

s/h/b "the" players and "the" pinnacle. Sorry, it's early...

By: yogiman on 9/19/12 at 6:22

dargent7,

Since I'm older than Mitt Romney, I've loved peanut butter sandwiches and chocolate milk years longer than he.

You ain't never tried one? Try it, you might like it. And if you like it and Obama doesn't. it will prove to you what kind of idiot he is and you won't vote for him.

By: Loner on 9/19/12 at 6:25

Don't fret, Ummmm, I leave those pesky English articles out quite often....an edit function here would be nice...nobody's perfect, this is not an English Regents exam....unless it's a glaring error, I leave it standing....if this were for print publication, I'd take it up a notch.

By: gdiafante on 9/19/12 at 6:26

You're right, Ummm. Flacco said it's an integrity of the game issue and he's right too. You can't talk about player safety and then put those refs on the field. I guess it's going to take a serious injury before they get it. That's a shame.

By: Loner on 9/19/12 at 6:35

Let's face it, the Football Rule Book is a long, convoluted and growing tome....new stuff is added every year, it seems...even the best ref's make bad calls....being an NFL official has to be more complicated than being a USSC judge....just look at brooding Clarence Thomas...the guy hasn't opened his mouth or engaged his brain in years, except to ask, "When's lunch?" Being an NFL official has to be a lot harder than being on the top court....the officials should be paid more than the Supremes.

By: Loner on 9/19/12 at 6:40

The NFL Officials Union has to be a tiny fraternity....smaller and more elite than the PATCO union and charged with nearly as much responsibility, I suppose. (just kidding)...will the President fire the striking officials, like Reagan did....to save America....and set an example for those elites who get out of line? Romney would have stepped in by now....making a spectacle out of the firings and praising the replacements.

By: Loner on 9/19/12 at 6:44

As we have seen, NFL players can be replaced...kind of...and NFL Officials can be replaced....sort of....now, can the owners be replaced too? And those annoying beer and car ads during the games...can we get those replaced too? And those Wilson brand footballs....let's replace those with non-union, Made-In-China substitutes....and the Nike crap...puhleeeese....can we replace that too?

By: yogiman on 9/19/12 at 6:45

Loner, I hate to say this, but you're showing yourself to be the man you are.

You're condemning Mitt Romney because he and his sons didn't volunteer for service. Even though they didn't know he was going to run for the Oval Office when he reached the age of 65.

But you refuse to blame Barack Obama for not volunteering at an early age even when it was obvious since he's been in office that he was going to run for the Oval Office in his later life.

So tell me; why is Romney guilty for not serving but Obama isn't?

You should read a letter by Gen David Petraeus stating how many volunteers have served. He said; "in WWII, 11.2% served in 4 years. During the Vietnam era, 4.3% served in 12 years. Since 2001, only .45% of our population has served in the Global War on Terror."

So blame Romney but don't blame Obama. Based on you argument, shouldn't every man that doesn't volunteer be blamed because one day in their future they might run for the Oval Office?

Gimma a break, Loner. Come on in to common sense.

By: yogiman on 9/19/12 at 6:50

Loner,

You make such a negative comment against Judge Thomas, so what do you think of the two known communist Barry has placed in the Supreme Court? Further, what do you think of a congress that would approve of them know of their past?

By: dargent7 on 9/19/12 at 6:51

Yogi:
I want a President who has an occasional Scotch, neat.
Not some Mormon Bishop who baptizes people after they're dead and wears Magic Underware. Who's never drank a good cup of coffee, a Coca-Cola, a glass of wine, or a beer.
This guy got a dual degree from Harvard, a J.D. and MBA (I got those on-line for $69.00), and never practiced either. He just went for the cold, hard cash.
He has no heart. Doesn't care about the poor, disadvantaged, women, or minorities.
Just Corps. that he can carve up, and sell off for a profit.
YOU vote for him.

Senator John McCain is out there asking vets to support a Vietnam War draft-dodger for Commander-In-Chief.

The Vietnam vets have never forgiven Jane Fonda for her mistakes and they will never forgive those who went to Canada, rather than serve...but the veterans and the nation are now supposed to forgive and forget that Willard Romney ran off to Paris, France to escape the draft during wartime....he was on a Mormon Mission...like so many other Mormons, Romney dodged military service, using his strange religion as cover.

Jane Fonda and the men who went to Canada are not asking to be elected Commander-in-Chief....Romney is.

McCain's hatred of Obama is so intense, he has lost his bearings....he's now asking vets to follow his shameful lead and vote for a draft dodger to become US Commander-in Chief.

By: dargent7 on 9/19/12 at 6:59

Obama was born in 1961, which made him 13 when Nixon called off the Vietnam war, "Peace with Honor" in 1974.
He was 10 when it was full blown. As was I. Sorry we didn't enlist.
Romney fled to Paris to do "missionary work" during the war.
His 5 sons didn't enlist in any Gulf war stated by G HW Bush in 1991. They had plenty of chances: Desert Storm, Desert Fox, and sonny boy's, Operation: Iraqi Freedom.
All a bunch of sissies living off daddy's wealth.
Two have surrogate women having their children because they fire blanks.
Probably gay.
The whole family is plastic, fake, and an embarrassment.
YOU vote for him.

Even with all the embarrassing truth about Romney being exposed on a continual, daily basis, the Obama haters and the intellectually challenged will continue to support him. After all, lots of those people still think Sarah Palin is "smart."

By: Loner on 9/19/12 at 7:12

To my knowledge, there is no record of anyone in Romney's family ever serving in any branch of the US forces.....Mitt's father and grandfather never served...Mitt never served....Mitt's five sons have not served.....that just does not look good on a resume, if one is seeking the Commander-In-Chief job. Obama was too young to serve in Vietnam; his maternal grandfather and uncle served honorably in WW2...with distinction.

Willard's family is good at personal combat avoidance....but Willard seems eager to let his buddy, PM Netanyahu, suck the US into another regional holy war....those two see such a move as good for business.

By: Captain Nemo on 9/19/12 at 7:14

Another truth is spoken by Ummmm...

By: yogiman on 9/19/12 at 7:17

dargent7,

In this election, you have choice: You vote for an American or a communist. Take your pick. I'll take the American.

What did you think of Jimmy Carter they way he put this nation down? Compare him with Barack Obama in this little show. www.foramerica.org/2012/09/watch-our-new-web-ad-carter-2-0/

You might enjoy it.

By: Loner on 9/19/12 at 7:18

In my 8:12 post - "uncle" s/h/b "great uncle".....my bad...Obama's grandfather and great uncle served in WW2.

By: Captain Nemo on 9/19/12 at 7:22

Ummmm…

To admit to this, these people would have to realize that their lives have been going in the wrong direction all along. This is something they can not do and they had rather walk straight into Hell than say they are wrong.

By: Loner on 9/19/12 at 7:23

Thanks, Captain for the kind word.

Yeah, Ummmm, those folks are part of the 53% that Romney is appealing to...he has written off the other 47%....but, if elected POTUS, Romney claims that he will not write off those who did not vote for him...he will be the President of and for all Americans.....or so he claims.

By: yogiman on 9/19/12 at 7:24

Okay, Loner,

So you must have a resume to run for the White House. What looked so good for you on Obama's resume? He refused to identify himself, so what was on the resume you based for your vote?

I'll repeat my question: Who in the hell is this man?
