Up for Debate: School board in denial

What do think about the Metro school board's latest vote to reject Great Hearts' charter proposal, seemingly doing so in defiance of the state?

I'm not sure which is most disturbing.

The local school board bravely defying the state in the face of threats to cut off funding, or the fact the state, in a classic Stalinesque tactic, deciding as a central governing authority, they know what is best for local schools.

I'm sure this will provide much fodder for comedians, late night talk show hosts, and political pundits.

Oh well, might as well pop some popcorn and watch the political special olympics.

By: govskeptic on 9/12/12 at 6:21

While I'm sure it probably won't happen in this case, the State has the
authority to disband this entire board and call for Metro to Appoint
or elect another. The guidelines on the diversity issue are so fuzzy
neither the Board nor the State has exact road map for this Charter to follow.

By: dargent7 on 9/12/12 at 6:31

I have NO idea what this topic is about. Didn't we have it yesterday?
If you read the article, it mentions, Glendale Spanish Immersion School as another charter school.....name has a nice ring to it, wouldn't you say?

Yep...

What's up with this murder of the US Ambassador to Libya and the Cairo riots?
Over a anti-Islamic film?
These people, as Ross Perot liked to say, think it's the year 11.
Mohammaud, as their prophet, encouraged killings.
The Ayatollas put a bounty on Salman Rushdies head for a book. Now, a movie?
And these "peaceful Muslim folks" want a Astrodome sized mosque in Murfeesboro? Let's just wait and see, listen carefully, if they condem this violence.
Good luck.

By: puddycat on 9/12/12 at 7:10

Just keep doing what you're doing and you'll keep getting what you're getting. The real losers in this are all of the kids who deserve better than what they're getting. So if you want to change what they're getting, you can't just keep doing what you're doing..

Left up to mayes and her mayesettes, this matter will be tied up for years without resolution. And during those years, how many kids will have lost how many opportunities because of these actions or inactions? How many more millions of taxpayer dollars will be thrown away so they can keep on doing what they're doing? But there's their answer; just keep doing what you're doing and hope you don't keep getting what you're getting.

That's a heck of a way to "run a railroad". But obviously none of them have.

By: gdiafante on 9/12/12 at 7:44

So you're equating Muslims who live in Murfreesboro with the radicals that stormed the Embassy? Do you also blame all Christians when some bomb an abortion clinic?

Did you know that there's been a mosque in M'boro for a long, long time...without the city falling into Sharia Law...or being bombed...or weekly stonings...

Give me a break.

By: yogiman on 9/12/12 at 8:00

Every religion has it's on beliefs, gdiafante. And to belong to that "organization" every member, in essence, swears to go by their religions "rules and regulations", just like you did when you volunteered for service.

While I haven't read about the Islamic faith as a know it, I understood it to say if you don't belong to the faith of Islam you should die.

Well, I understand you're going to die someday, but today because you don't belong to that faith?

I know I'm not as brilliant as you and your co-posters on this site but Islam is the only faith I have ever read of that believes you should die if you if you don't belong to their faith.

By: yogiman on 9/12/12 at 8:01

Sorry, I left the w out of "own" beliefs.

By: Captain Nemo on 9/12/12 at 8:02

If the State wants to run the school district, then the State should abolish all locale school systems and do it themselves. I wonder how that would work out.

By: Captain Nemo on 9/12/12 at 8:21

You are starting to sound like the zealous religious crazies in Libya, which equate the act of an obsessive so-called Christian in Gainesville and a Jewish producer to all Westerners d7, does not justified your response. That is like saying that the fringe right-wing in this country represents all Americans.

Also I think that you should get your measurements a little more in line with facts. The Astrodome and the Masques in Murfreesboro are far from being the same size.

By: Rasputin72 on 9/12/12 at 8:39

I really have no interest in the failed Metro school system. As far as I am concerned no matter what form it takes it is now totally in the hands of the welfare crowd. Stay away from MNPS.

As far as the situation in Libya, the one thing that we can all count on is that Barack Hussein Obama will do nothing that is in the long term interest of American embassy protocol.

I have nothing against Muslims. I have endured the ghettos of the United States all my life and I hardly think that Muslims could cause more harm than the "ghetto people"

The United States would not be attacked by these Muslims had they not supported Israel since 1947. The best thing that could be done by a non-Muslim background President would be to declare publicly that the United States of America would no longer interfere in any matter concerning Israel and the Muslim world.

The worst thing that could happen would be that the oil supply would be disrupted and gasoline would go to $18.00 per gallon which would be just fine with me. I just do not enjoy fighting the traffic in Nashville. I doubt that $18.00 per gallon gasoline would change any habits in Palm Beach however.

By: Captain Nemo on 9/12/12 at 8:47

So just how long have you been rich?

By: slacker on 9/12/12 at 8:53

You should rethink that Rasp. I'm sure your Dodge Dart gets good gas mileage with that 6 cylinder and all, but 18 bucks is pretty stout.
And Rasp.. you have to stop confusing Bobbie's Dairy Dip with Palm Springs, makes you sound a bit delusional.

By: Rasputin72 on 9/12/12 at 8:54

My Dear Captain, Do you think that the "ghetto people" stay penned up in their compound? They are on the streets and in the newspapers and in the jails and into home breakins, murders of innocent people, robbery in Green Hills, burglary in Belle Meade.

Do you really and truly think that one has to live in the ghetto to experience their vile behavior and moral and mental bankruptcy?

What do you think has destroyed the MNPS system?

I think the underclass has won a great victory. If the underclass gives up their fight for diversity they will have to resign themselves to being just what they are. The Underclass.

By: Rasputin72 on 9/12/12 at 8:59

Slacker........Palm Springs in in California. Palm Beach is in Florida. For you however, I doubt that geography was ever of much interest. I was the same way about Trigonometry.

By: gdiafante on 9/12/12 at 9:02

Yogi, if you don't know anything about a subject and can only make assumptions, just don't do it. If you can pull up nutjob websites on a daily basis, you can search Islam and read up.

By the way, did you know that the Islam god, Allah, is the same God of Abraham? Did you know they believe Jesus was a prophet (but not divine)?

Did you know that Muslim extremists, like Christian extremists, quote (Bible, Qu'ran) versus out of context in order to further their own agenda? Did you know that a lot of the Qu'ran is as archaic as the Bible but some followers still take it literally?

Did you know that Muslims have lived in this country, peacefully for years?

Don't just accept BS, find out for yourself. Religion is religion is religion...

By: BigPapa on 9/12/12 at 9:08

This reminds me so much of the Carter years. We're seen as a weak nation, an indecisive empty suit as a President. We are in yet another great national malaise.

The sooner he's gone the sooner the adults can be in charge and move us in a better direction.

By: Captain Nemo on 9/12/12 at 9:11

Rasputin once again I must insist that I am not your anything. As for living in your world, I’m glad to say I don’t. You speak as if you still live on the street and only wish to be in Palm Beech.

By: Captain Nemo on 9/12/12 at 9:13

gdia please ignore the zero man.

By: gdiafante on 9/12/12 at 9:16

Well, Papa, there is a malaise...an apathy present, no doubt. But the remark about the "adults" is ridiculous. Going back to the failed supply-side BS that got us into this mess isn't a very mature idea. In fact, I think that a "re-do" to any economic policy of the last 50 years is probably a bad idea.

It's the 21st century, it's time we acted like it.

By: Captain Nemo on 9/12/12 at 9:19

Isn’t Bobbie’s Dairy Dip a long way from the Mission?

By: Captain Nemo on 9/12/12 at 9:27

Rasputin must be on a thirty minuet computer at the Library. He’ll have to wait for his turn to post again.

By: dargent7 on 9/12/12 at 9:29

Bobbies Dairy Dip in on 50th and Charlotte. The Mission is on 8th and Division.
The mosque in Murfeesboro is a linch-pin in the Muslim take over of America.
Like I said, let's see what statement they come out with re: the Lybia assassination and cario riots over a silly movie about Islam. These people have a hir-trigger for any and all anti-Mohammund rhetoric.
After 9/11, they said nothing, like those in Dearborn, Mich.
Which is what they'll do this time around. Nothing said.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 9/12/12 at 9:32

dargent, the mosque on 12 South always commemorates 9/11. They also expressed outrage on 9/11/01.

By: bfra on 9/12/12 at 9:32

Nemo - Dairy Dips are in & around West Palm Beach, so Raspy can sit at the new one here & still pretend he is in W. Palm Beach. Wonder if he will be wearing his ascot.:-)

Good luck.

And the winner eof this years Nobel PEACE Prize goes to Islam for promoting "World Peace" as they said in Miss Congeniality w/Sandra Bullock. D7, burn a Koran or and some type of flag from their country and you'll see what PEACE is all about.

PEACE - People Everywhere Acting Crazy (about) Everything!

By the way, I read in the Tennessean a letter to editor asking why taxpayers have to foot the bill for $700,000 in cancelled conventions at the Karl Dean bigger and better convention center. Can someone enlighten me on that.

For all you who hate conservatives, you'll be happy to hear my brother is a flaming liberal (oh, who paid cash for his Mercedes SUV, so he's also a 1%'er). But our family loves him -- anyway!

By: slacker on 9/12/12 at 9:35

Nemo, on S.S. check arrival day. Rasp. puts a couple of gallons of gas in his reliable Dodge Dart, and motors on out Charlotte, to Bobbies. Its Rasp's happiest day, getting ''sprinkles'' on his sundae. The staff at Bobbies, see Rasp's Dodge Dart coming, and have his order ready. Rasp. likes being recognized by staff, makes him think he's at Palm Beach.

dargent, the mosque on 12 South always commemorates 9/11. They also expressed outrage on 9/11/01.

Blanket, if that is true, it is nice. BUT why is it one never hears of any collective "outrate" over 911 or any other islamist extremists acts of violence from the so-called peace loving muslims? Are they afraid that if they speak up, somone will have them killed?

And I have a question: Have you ever seen or heard of anyone going to bat for a Jehovah's Witness, 7th Day Adventist, Morman, Catholic or other religious group as adamently and vehemently as some do for muslim (extremists)? Just wondering.

Why is our Embassy being attacked and the flag torn down and burned? if we did that to any Embassy in DC it would be an act of war.

By: Captain Nemo on 9/12/12 at 9:39

dargent, I’ve seen people go nuts here in America, over the burning of the flag and the Piss Christ art Photograph of Andres Serrano’s. The degree of violence is paper thin.

By: frodo on 9/12/12 at 9:40

Hey, Raspy, cut Slacker some slack. Palm Beach is on the map in BOTH California and Florida.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 9/12/12 at 9:41

bud, did you know that Iran commemorates 9/11 every year?

By: frodo on 9/12/12 at 9:43

....or did I misunderstand the Pam Springs comment in this dizzying conversation, which might next turn to baseball or TSU football. I'll just shut up now.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 9/12/12 at 9:44

“My deep sympathy goes out to the American nation,” said President Mohammad Khatami. “Terrorism is condemned and the world public should identify its roots and its dimensions and should take fundamental steps to eliminate it.” Mourners held a spontaneous candlelight vigil as thousands of people took to the streets of north Tehran chanting, “Death to terrorists.” Iranian soccer fans observed a minute of silence before a match withBahrain. Even Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned the attacks: “Mass killing is wrong, whether it’s in Hiroshima, Bosnia, New York, or Washington.” During Friday prayers at Qom, Ayatollah Ibrahim Amini said that the Iranian people grieved with the relatives of those killed, and the traditional slogan “Death to America” was absent from the crowds’ mantras.

By: gdiafante on 9/12/12 at 9:47

I never hear outrate either...

What is it that you want? Do you want each and every Muslim in America to call you and personally apologize? Do you want them to create a half-hour infomercial on why they condemn terrorist acts? Seriously, how much is enough for you?

The fact that you think every Muslim-American citizen has to make a statement each time a terrorist does something says more about you than them.

I wonder what Muhammed Ali thinks about this...why hasn't Kareem Abdul Jabaar condemned this act yet...he must agree with the extremists...

By: Blanketnazi2 on 9/12/12 at 9:51

Bud asked: And I have a question: Have you ever seen or heard of anyone going to bat for a Jehovah's Witness, 7th Day Adventist, Morman, Catholic or other religious group as adamently and vehemently as some do for muslim (extremists)? Just wondering.

Yes, the Supreme Court has. You can research it.

By: Captain Nemo on 9/12/12 at 9:51

The Jehovah’s Witness and 7 Day Adventist are ignored by people like. The Mormon's has been chase across the country until they made a home for themselves in Utah. Even today they are call a cult and not a religion.

So bud what you have done to protect these religious folk?

Good morning, Nashville.

As for Great Hearts, I support the local Nashville Metro School Board's decision...it was a close vote, but Gov. Haslam's educational goons were stopped dead n their tracks.

This Huffman character, the arse-lick that your tea-baggibg governor installed as his educational watchdog, is a product of Teach For America, the folks who supply much of the teaching staff for Great Hearts and other publicly-funded, non-union, private schools.

Huffman's conflicts of interest are glaring....your pathetic governor has surrounded himself with fawning but incompetent yes men....time to start the recall process....Haslam should have gone into the Christian ministry, as he once longed to do....he's a better theocrat than a small "d" democrat......get rid of this joker.

This is a victory for those who still believe in the benefits of collective bargaining, racial diversity, teacher quality and student performance. This is also a victory for those who reject top-down dictatorial governance....this is a victory for the taxpayers, IMO.
