Up for Debate: Sheriff Hall's frustration

Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 11:50pm

At a Wednesday budget hearing, Sheriff Daron Hall expressed his concern and frustration over what he sees as a pattern of budget reductions for his office, stating that a full commitment to public safety requires better funding for the sheriff's office too. Do you agree with Hall's points? Do you think he waited too long to raise concerns? Or is he using the hearing for political posturing?

Sheriff Hall is just being vocal. No department manager is ever really happy with the budget he or she gets. Everything is important through the eyes of any self-serving bureaucrat.

You can be assured however that there is still plenty of places to cut expenses once you determine that you must make do with what you have. Everyone but the underclass and irresponsible are acutely aware of the realities of living within your means.

Well, your first two sentences were accurate, it went south from there.

Personally, I'd rather they spend money in areas like law enforcement, etc., than in baseball parks.

As a society, in small/ big towns like Nashville, we cannot afford to NOT have Police and Fire/ EMS at full strength.
Watch any local news channel at 6:00am. The lead story, every day, 7 days a week, is either a fire or a shooting, usually one of each before it's the weather report at 6:10am.

By: gdiafante on 6/14/12 at 7:17

Bah...privatize it all...police, fire, EMS, roads, utilities...all of it.

By: budlight on 6/14/12 at 7:32

Yeah G, just like the privatized the school custodians. Kick out people who care about the job, love the kids and the schools and replace them with janitors who "could care less" and it shows. The kids used to know the people who worked in their schools and cared about them, even giving them rewards and praise. Not anymore thanks to "privatizing" them.

And privatize police - you mean like the airports with their little "airport security" aka Homeland Security or maybe the UN with those wack jobs at the wheel policing our cities and citizens. NOT!

Hall said "He called his department’s budget situation “dangerous,” adding that reductions would hit his office’s “community services” the most. This includes storm water drainage work with the Metro Water department, he said, as well as assisting Metro Public Works with pickup duties."

Whitetrash, just drive up and down the streets sometime and look at the garbage all over the place, mattresses, tires, and other household debris. Then look at the garbage bags piled up after the Sherifff's department has had their inmates walk and clean up.

Metro Public Works is a joke. They are not on top of keeping our streets clean. Without Judge Norman's drug court and the Sheriff's department, we'd be in a real real real trashy city - sort of like some cities in South America, Asia and other places where they trash the land.

I'm part of a team that "volunteers" to pick up trash. Cripes! I pay the fricking taxes to fund the fricking Public Works and they don't do the job. So I'm paying the taxes AND picking up the trash. What is wrong with that picture? Thank you Sheriff Hall for all you do for our city. When you run for Mayor, let me know. Too bad you didn't do it last time. We would not have Dean spending, spending, spending our money and raising our taxes if you had.

Can't get any sarcasm past Bud...sharp as a tack, she is...lol

By: yogiman on 6/14/12 at 7:37

How many deputies does the sheriff's department now have that costs the county 75 million per year? I thought they verily eliminated the sheriff's department when Davidson County became a part of a metropolitan government.

In Donelson, before Metro came into to being, we had to pay for police and fire protection. Maybe we should go back to that time and just see how id cost for the services we get today.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/14/12 at 8:04

LOL gd.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/14/12 at 8:07

Old yogi can’t get past his lack of intelligent. He thinks the 75 million is just for the payroll.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/14/12 at 8:11

Thanks for the link gdia, but I doubt the log will read it.

By: dargent7 on 6/14/12 at 8:28

Bud: Maybe you should volunteer to be a "Neighborhood Watch" commander, like George Zimmerman.
Get that "Stand Your Ground" law passed here in Tenn.
Because Metro Police isn't doing their job.

By: govskeptic on 6/14/12 at 8:33

Sheriff Hall was snookered by the Mayor and Finance Director by actually following
the orders of showing a budget with 2% reduction as directed! Other department
heads submitted status quo or increased budgets and were rewarded for doing
so. Maybe they were given a heads up or wink and nod as to the increase the
Mayor had in mind while Sheriff Hall was not! Tourist and magazines don't
see the goings on at the Sheriff's Dept so diminishing their budget for the
betterment of more visible spending is the priority! What a process?

By: slacker on 6/14/12 at 8:34

Just speculation on my part, but it appears that Sheriff Hall is not a member of the Dean inner circle. Sheriff Hall knows that any department head, or councilperson, that fails to gain the favor of His Honor, will be punished. I suppose the Sheriff quietly accepted his budget reductions prior to the tax increase. Now that the cash is gonna be rolling in, the Sheriff apparently wants his department to be included in the windfall.

By: BenDover on 6/14/12 at 8:47

The sheriff's department seems to be a pretty decent crew. And the PoPo seems much better since Serpas relocated his whale-@$$ to New Orleans.

Whoever signed us up for COPS federal funding deal with the poison pill needs for it to come out of his pay though.

By: yogiman on 6/14/12 at 8:49

Interesting, gdiafarte.

When I lived in Nashville we had two forms of government; one for Nashville and one for Davidson County. I moved out of Nashville about the time they were looking into the change to a metropolitan government for a reduction in costs. I understood, then, it would reduce the sheriff's office office in personnel and they were just keeping it, basically, in name only because every county had a sheriff. I guess they still do.

The only times I've been in Nashville in the past 50 years was the few times I had to come there to one of the hospitals and I have no desire to come back.

By: gdiafante on 6/14/12 at 8:55

Don't worry, yogi, we have no desire to have you back.

I'd say your speculation is spot on, slacker.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/14/12 at 9:07

gdia-

Before the civil rights moment there use to be a sign at the county line that read; Don’t let the sun set on yogi in Davidson County!!

By: yogiman on 6/14/12 at 9:21

damn, dumba$$,,Don't you feel it an honor to live in my original section of town? You might even be living on my grandfathers old farm.

I just hope your house isn't on the row in his old corn field where he died. He'd be rolling over in his grave if he knew you was living there now.

By: yogiman on 6/14/12 at 9:26

You can sleep more peacefully now, gdiafarte, you don't have to worry about possibly having me as a neighbor.

By: gdiafante on 6/14/12 at 9:31

I wouldn't care if you were my neighbor, yogi. Every neighborhood needs at least one nut to keep the others away.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/14/12 at 9:35

You don’t even know what part of town I live in yogi. Davidson County is over 500 square miles big. So unless your grandfathers own the entire county, shut you pie hole.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/14/12 at 9:38

Gordonsville has the Village Idiot. lol

By: yogiman on 6/14/12 at 10:02

Why do you mention Antioch so much, dumba$$?

And is that why your neighbors like you so much, gdiafarte?

By: gdiafante on 6/14/12 at 10:04

Any bets that yogi is really a zit-plagued teenage loser? He seems to like to call people names...doesn't sound like a mature man to me.

NEWS FLASH (for some, ahem, Paul):
Metro Police and the Sheriff's Office are two separate entities. Daron Hall does not manage Metro Police; that would be Interim Cheif of Police Steve Anderson.

Here's what needs to be done:
Take the total dollar amount of lawsuit money paid out by the city due to the DCSO's malfeasance in protecting detainees' and prisoners' rights, and subtract it from last year's DCSO budget. Request a budget submission with a 2% reduction on top of that (for the hell of it). Is Hall's job considered civil service? If not, I'm sure Dean can appoint a dept. director who will play ball. Their operating budget is not their only cost to the city.

By: bfra on 6/14/12 at 11:05

In Loner's absence:
The Monkey Gland is a cocktail of gin, orange juice, grenadine and absinthe named after a surgical technique of grafting monkey testicle tissue into humans.

I'm considered a swapper, gdiafarte.

You ridicule me, I then do you a favor and ridicule you. Makes us even, doesn't it? Or do you idiotically feel mentally superior?

Age wise, you're possibly physically superior. But age wise, you're obviously mentally inferior.

By: bfra on 6/14/12 at 11:15

News Alert: yogi is not mentally superior to a pissant, much less any human. Now that is the one & only thing he proves 24/7.

By: yogiman on 6/14/12 at 11:34

Except when you respond, bfra. You show your idiocy every time you hit your keyboard.

Sorry to disappoint you.

Interesting...Why is Lamar Alexander stepping in with Barack Obama in his war of coal when it was about to be stopped?

I read recently, Senator Jim Inhofe gave a speech where he said" The momentum to stop President Obama's war on coal is now so great that some of my colleagues, Senators Alexander and Pryor, are going to introduce a counter measure to my resolution. .. This alternative is a clear admission that the Obama-EPA's policy is wrong - but does not fix the problem, it simply puts off the day of execution a few more years.

With Lamar being from east Tennessee where there's a lot of coal mines, why is he siding with Obama? And a bigger question is: Why is Obama trying to eliminate the coal industry?

By: yogiman on 6/14/12 at 11:57

Excuse me, bfra. When did I brag about being superior or invite others out with my shotgun waiting? When you grow up, and especially if you grow old, you'll learn you don't put your face in front of a young man and dare him to swing at you. If you're that idiotic, you'll learn the hard way.

I'd like to read that threat you say I made.

By: slacker on 6/14/12 at 11:58

bfra, once you get the bill for the baseball stadium & rapid transit, you'll relocate to Orange Beach, as I'm planning to do.

You got to love this, unless you are a Tea Bag, Republican.

Despite the fact that we as a nation just celebrated donuts with their own holiday (the most sacred day on the American calendar right after Christmas, the Fourth of July, and the Breaking Bad premiere), it would appear that Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney does not know the magical be-holed pastries are.
