Up for debate: The State Fair

Monday, February 11, 2013 at 5:48pm

The Tennessee State Fair is the subject of wrangling between Metro and the state. The newly appointed state board has told the Metro Fair Board that it must offer a lease to the state's appointed non-profit. The Metro board has asked for more money. Who's right?

bobyounts... I agree. Last time I was there was about 10 years ago and it was covered up with thugs. Couldn't even turn my teenagers loose to enjoy the rides because we feared for their safety.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 2/12/13 at 9:25

bobyounts, I also agree. They good ole days of the state fair in its current location is long gone and it's not coming back. It's time to do something different and longing for it to be as it was is unrealistic.

Ben sounds the alarm: The Muslims are immigrating in mass and are out-breeding the indigenous Europeans by about 4 to 1... and they are bringing their radical 7th century culture with them. I can almost hear the klaxon horn sounding.

"Out-breeding"? Sounds like Nazi propaganda directed at the Jews...ye old "enemy within" idea.

The Jewish state concept is an attempt to turn the clock back to the first century, before the Romans threw the Jews out of Palestine....so, which ideology, Zionism or Islam, is more backwards...more of a theocratic throwback to more brutish times?

By: Loner on 2/12/13 at 9:38

For those unfamiliar with the klaxon horn, hear is an audio clip that is surely recognizable....when I read Ben's anti-Muslim tirade, I could hear that AH-OOO-GAH....AH-OOO-GAH....AH-OOO-GAH....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2VhB7vaZI0

A great ring-tone, for sure.

I mean, what's not to like about an Islamic Republic, Ben? That's better than an Islamic Democracy, isn't it?

Israel, the self-described "Jewish state", now claims to be a "Jewish democratic state"..the "democratic" adjective is a new addition. How can a state be both a Jewish state and a democratic state? That's oxymoronic by nature ....and only morons would buy that argument.

The Islamic Republic of Iran does not make such false boasts. It's an undemocratic republic..the Iranians are republicans, not democrats....Ben should support the Iranians on that basis alone.

By: BenDover on 2/12/13 at 9:50

Blanket asks me, "why the hysteria?"... ironic, in light of Loner's response to my measured, factual and cogent points.

By: Loner on 2/12/13 at 9:51

"Measured, factual and cogent points"?

Surely, you jest.

By: BenDover on 2/12/13 at 10:00

AH-OOO-GAH!....AH-OOO-GAH!....AH-OOO-GAH!

By: Loner on 2/12/13 at 10:02

These alarmist statements do not sound like, "Measured, factual and cogent points".

"In 2 or 3 generations the indigenous Europeans will be the minority in France with the rest of Western Europe not far behind; and they are already feeling the pains as all of those 'youth' riots are really 'Muslim youth' riots."

"This is a planned measure by the Islamic political caliphate to overthrow the West and we ignore it at our peril."

"If a Mosque advocates Sharia it is in conflict with our Constitution and western values and should be shut down."

The Nazis thought that the Jews were a threat to their national security, for similar reasons....take out, "Mosque", insert, "Synagogue".

By: pswindle on 2/12/13 at 10:02

We need to keep the state fair and fairgrounds and put money into it to make it the pride of the south. With the right concept it could bring in millions. But Dean wants it for his own personal ideas. Maybe, the next mayor will understand what a great treasure that we have.

By: Loner on 2/12/13 at 10:05

Ben...you could change your username to "Klaxon"....actually, that's a pretty cool username....I may have to use it myself...AH-OOO-GAH!....AH-OOO-GAH!....AH-OOO-GAH!

My horn's louder than yours, Ben....(raspberry sound here....)

By: gdiafante on 2/12/13 at 10:08

Ben has lost it. He's just an anonymous nut in the conspiracy theory crowd. And, as a Christian, he is required to be that way. After all, the great battle of good and evil is coming.

Why are Christians such chicken$hits when they know how the movie ends?

By: Blanketnazi2 on 2/12/13 at 10:09

Ben, what do you think of the Pope resigning?

By: Loner on 2/12/13 at 10:12

Why conserve natural resources, it's all ending in a lake of fire when Jesus returns with a vengeance...and starts whupping major ass on a global scale...gonna make the Nazis look like Cub Scouts....ain't that the current dogmatic narrative?

By: BenDover on 2/12/13 at 10:13

No... they thought the Jews were an inferior race and should be exterminated, loner.

By: Loner on 2/12/13 at 10:17

Attila the Hun move over, here comes the Returned Jesus! When Jesus returns, 2/3 of the Jews are doomed, according to the Good Book, right? And the unsaved gentiles will be nothing more than fuel for hell's fires....at least that's what I heard on the Christian radio the other day....the nun's must have been full of shit....who knew?

By: BenDover on 2/12/13 at 10:18

You guys are bringing religion into this, not me.

By: Loner on 2/12/13 at 10:26

Race or Religion, Ben?

Ironically, the Jews are now, "self-concentrating"...a Nazi dream ...because extermination is so much easier when the population is concentrated....especially in the nuclear age....The Israelis know this, so Israel has amassed an illegal nuclear arsenal, which in turn, set off the regional nuclear arms race.

Israel's shameful treatment of the six million non-Israeli Arabs under its jurisdiction in the OT and Gaza is generating anti-Semitism in the Arab and Muslim world...US support for Jewish supremacy in the Holy Land has made us a target...Israel's enemies can strike at Israel by hitting us.

By: BenDover on 2/12/13 at 10:27

I'd have to consult a Catholic about that bn. I'm not as up on their orthodoxy as I should be I guess.

Christians believe in a just and merciful God who sent his Son to be sacrificed for humanity's sin against God... a lamb to suffer the price in our place where the only thing expected in return is faith and devotion to Him and to a better life through repentance from our sin.... offering us eternal salvation and unity rather than endless separation. I do not know if Hell is literally the fire described by Jesus or separation from God. I've heard the case made both ways.

By: slacker on 2/12/13 at 10:27

Enough with the fairgrounds.. already!
On to more important stuff.. the new Pope.
Catholic's.. particularly new Irish immigrants were also frown upon in the U.S., and mistreated.
Time to make things right. I hearby today, nominate Mel Gibson for Pope. A better catholic lad does not exist.
Contact your Cardinals, and urge them to draft Mel. Mel.. the peoples Pope
Mel will bring some life to a dull Vatican. I mean the guy resigning smoked cigars, & drank beer. Whats Mel gonna hurt?
Jodie Foster can be Mother Superior.
Mel pledges: no state fair at the Vatican.

By: gdiafante on 2/12/13 at 10:28

Actually, Ben, yogi brought up the subject, then I retorted about religious freedom, then you chimed in with your conspiracy theory and the rest, as they say, is history.

By: gdiafante on 2/12/13 at 10:31

Religion is the opium of the people. Ben, just say no.

By: Loner on 2/12/13 at 10:35

Ben...you schlepped in the anti-Muslim BS....Yogi touched off this online Holy War with his allegation that BHO and Brennan were both Muslims....you followed up with your 8:34 AM rant...you right-wingers started the religion-related verbal sniping....holy wars suck.

By: brrrrk on 2/12/13 at 10:36

Religion is nothing more than a way of replacing facing responsibility for ones sins with absolution.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 2/12/13 at 10:40

True, brrrk. Jesse Ventura pegged it when he said religion is for the weak minded.

By: Loner on 2/12/13 at 10:43

Sorry, Brrrrk, for unfairly besmirching the fair-skinned, unfairy-like, coonskin-cap crowd and their fair-mindedness.....and their unfair sense of fair-play....but, what's fair is fair and the fair is fair game.

People can believe whatever they want. Unfortunately with religion, it's more you can believe whatever you want as long as it's what I believe.

The irony is that Ben believes it's a vast Muslim conspiracy to end Christianity's reign while the Muslims believe that it's a vast Christian conspiracy to stamp out the Islam faith.

What it most resembles reminds me of Carlin...my god's d**k is bigger than your god's d**k.

Former Navy UDT, professional wrestler, actor, and Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura examines various conspiracy theories involving numerous controversial subjects such as global warming, the September 11 attacks, secret societies, government surveillance, and secret weapons projects.

In the first season, Ventura teams up with a group of investigators consisting of skeptic Alex Piper, reporter June Sarpong and investigator Michael Braverman. In season two, Piper is replaced by investigator Daniel Kucan in a few episodes. In season three, Ventura's son Tyrel Ventura and Sean Stone, the son of director Oliver Stone, are part of the investigative team.
Ratings and reviews

The premiere episode was watched by 1.635 million viewers, TruTV's biggest audience for a new series launch.[4] The next two episodes were watched by 1.586 million[5] and 1.301 million[6] viewers. Over the first three episodes the series averaged 1.5 million viewers, up 60% from the same time slot a year before.[7] During January the show averaged 1.6 million viewers, helping truTV deliver its biggest month ever in prime time.[8]

Critics who have reviewed the show include Linda Stasi of New York Post, who called it "mindless, good fun and a hoot to watch aging action stars still taking action", and Robert Lloyd of The Los Angeles Times, who wrote, "Whatever truth is out there, it's filtered here through what is arranged more as an adventure series than a documentary."[9]
Controversy
'Police State' criticism

Shortly after the season two episode "Police State" aired, U.S. Representative Steve Cohen from Tennessee, who was interviewed in the episode, called for the removal of this program from truTV's lineup. He called the episode "outrageous distortion and an outright lie," as well as "dangerous and irresponsible." He stated "when the media purposely distort the facts to create confusion and mislead people, they must be held accountable. Unless we actively debunk false and misleading reports, we risk leaving the public with a dangerously skewed vision of this country." Cohen said he was "shocked and appalled" that Time Warner would air a program "so full of inaccuracies and irresponsible distortions." [10]

The "Police State" episode investigates allegations that various prison-like facilities built around the country that are operated by FEMA will be used during martial law for the internment of citizens who are deemed a threat to national security. Officials have stated the facilities are emergency FEMA camps for the housing of civilians displaced by hurricanes or other natural disasters.[11] Cohen, whose district covers most of Memphis, created legislation aimed at creating temporary FEMA camps for the housing of people affected by any earthquake in the area.[12]

Another allegation brought up in the episode focused on a private facility outside Covington, Georgia that was stockpiling thousands of plastic bins alleged to be used for mass burials. The company that runs it is Vantage Products, the country's largest manufacturer of grave liners, and the facility is their storage site.[13]

In a response to the criticism, Misty Skedgell, a Turner spokesperson, described Conspiracy Theory as an "entertainment program that appears on an entertainment network."[12]

Although most of the episodes of Conspiracy Theory have been rerun, the Police State episode has aired only once, owing largely to the controversy surrounding the content of the episode.[14]
Production issues

After airing two seasons of the show, the creation of future episodes was in doubt when on January 25, 2011, the Drudge Report announced that Ventura had filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), for what he calls "warrant-less and suspicion-less scans and body searches."[15] Ventura, who has a titanium hip replacement, claimed that he sets off metal detectors and is always pulled out of line for lengthy pat-downs. The day of the announcement, Alex Jones, who is a consultant and frequent guest on the show, stated on his show that he had witnessed a pat-down of Ventura at the Atlanta International Airport while filming for Conspiracy Theory, during which Ventura loudly protested that "America is turning into East Germany." Jones also stated on air that Ventura, who flew two to three times a week for Conspiracy Theory, refuses to fly commercially again, a vow he reiterated after his lawsuit against the TSA was dismissed in November 2011.[16][17]

Although there were concerns that Ventura would not be able to continue hosting Conspiracy Theory as a result of his lawsuit and refusal to fly commercially, it was revealed in September 2011 that he would host a third season that would be completed and launched on TruTV sometime in 2012.

On June 26, 2012, Alex Jones interviewed Jesse Ventura. When the two discussed the third season, Ventura confirmed that filming on the third season was completed in November 2011 and said the season was supposed to air in January or February 2012 but for unknown reasons had not yet aired as of that point. The delay led Ventura to suspect that the show was cancelled.[18]

On July 31, 2012, Jesse's son, Tyrel Ventura, appeared on the Alex Jones radio show to discuss the upcoming third season. Tyrel dismissed allegations that the show was officially canceled, or that any of the new episodes were being censored. Tyrel stated that a change in management at the production company had caused delays. He also confirmed that the new episodes were still being finalized and edited for TruTV.[19]
Unaired "TSA" episode

On October 29, 2012 Jesse Ventura made an appearance on the Alex Jones radio show and made it known that the final episode of the third season, an episode involving the TSA, would not air. He declined to mention what the reason was, only that "the decision was made at TruTV, if you want to know, ask them."[20] Had the episode aired, it was to cover allegations that former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff made huge profits off measures he enacted for airline safety, especially with full body scanners that were manufactured by firms he invested in. Additionally, Ventura was to investigate alleged "cancer clusters" centered around TSA workers who were exposed to the machines on a daily basis.[21][22]
David Icke feud

On the premiere episode for season three, which focused on the conspiracy theory that shape-shifting reptilians are controlling the world in human form, Ventura interviewed the man who popularized the conspiracy, David Icke. Ventura met Icke at the Agora in Cleveland, Ohio in November 2011, where Icke was giving one of his seminars. During the interview, Ventura pitched what he called "hard questions" at Icke such as how much money he made off the conspiracy with book sales and speeches. Icke became insulted and an argument broke out in which Icke eventually walked off the set.

In an article written by Icke shortly after the incident, Icke said part of the reason for his getting upset was because he waited a long time for Ventura to start the interview. Icke also said that Ventura, who in the end of the episode concluded that the reptilian conspiracy was false, should have stayed and listened to Icke giving all the information and "connecting all the dots," to confirm Icke's theories.[23]

Holy Cow...we got all kinds of responses on the Retired Pontiff....

Slack suggests that he orders a "Paradise".

Brrrk suggests a "Glowing Pope".

Bfra suggests a "Witches Brew".

Captain Nemo suggests a "Bloody Mary".

All good answers....but the multi-lingual ex-pontiff has just told the world to "Take this job and shove it!"......So, he walks into the gay piano bar and orders an "Adios Mother****er".

Adios Mother****er recipe:

Scale ingredients to servings
1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz rum
1/2 oz tequila
1/2 oz gin
1/2 oz Blue Curacao liqueur
2 oz sweet and sour mix
2 oz 7-Up® soda

Pour all ingredients except the 7-Up into a chilled glass filled with ice cubes. Top with 7-Up and stir gently.
