Up for Debate: Is there a need for enacting Voter ID laws?

A new report suggests that the basis for voter ID laws — widespread voter fraud — might be thin at best. What do you think?

Even the highest IQ's can be idealogues. The founders chose a Republic so that the best and brightest could represent those less educated or fortunate and act in their best interest.

Regardless of party, we can all agree that the elected represent their donors, not us.

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 5:15

Good morning, Nashville...Day #2 on this board.

Welcome back MamaG....I was gone all afternoon and missed the reunion.

And welcome back Chief...were you deployed overseas? Can you tell us anything about it?

As for this topic, I said my say yesterday....we heard the good reasons ...here's the real reason: this is voter suppression by way of voter intimidation; the GOP is targeting a sector of the population who are primarily Democrats....it's dirty pool....Tricky Dick Nixon would approve of the plan....the Republican Party is undemocratic by nature.

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 5:30

True that, Gd, the public's interest is not being represented; the special interests are...and now, with the Super-PACs, fabulously wealthy tycoons are now one-man special interest groups, with real clout.

I thought that a "republic" was the alternative to a "monarchy"...whether that republic is secular, theocratic, democratic, authoritarian, socialist or whatever is another story....not all republics are democratic and secular by nature, as we can clearly see.

The Founders did seem to fear the fact that the masses can be asses....so they set up safeguards...checks and balances...but the major political parties have dismantled or buggered most of those built-in safety features....and the major media are also content with "Democracy Lite".

As long as the cable TV is available, for the "circus"...and as long as we have food stamps & welfare for the "bread", the republic will continue to exist....if we lose the bread & circus, there will be riots in the street.....and home-made firebombs hurled at the White House....armed bands of outlaws, renegades and warlords will take control.

By: dargent7 on 8/15/12 at 5:36

Weds.
It's on every cable news channel...the two plane pile up at Nashville's Int'l Airport.
No one was on board either, one was being towed and broke loose.

Big news is Ryan's Medicare "Kill Grandma" policy.
Vouchers for those 55 and older? Biggest voting block in America.
Good luck in Nov., Mittens and Ryan.

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 5:54

Darge: They are spending so much on airport security that they can't afford better equipment and personnel to service the aircraft themselves?

Yeah, the GOP is gonna starve Grandma into submission...."Where are your papers old woman?".....no papers, no vote...no vote, no eat....no papers, no nuthin'...that's the Randian safety net.

Remember, Paul Ryan went to college on the public's dime...SS Survivor bennies....now he would deny SS bennies to others....claims there is a "moral hazard" in receiving government benefits....he ought to know; he's now a professional politician...that ain't workin'....money for nuthin' and the chicks for free....seems as though government benefits corrupted Ryan's morals.....he's a slothful hypocrite.

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 6:02

Local weather update....it's been cold and rainy for a week now...this morning, I noticed a distinct reduction in the volume and the diversity in the daybreak sounds of the songbirds.....yesterday, a huge flock of crows roosted nearby; their cawwing was intense...it was a raucous convocation of crows...I figured they may be preparing to migrate, though some crows remain all winter long.

My point is that the Summer is winding down up here...what's going on in Music City?

By: Moonglow1 on 8/15/12 at 6:11

Moonglow1: The answer to the question is NO, there is no need for a voter ID law.

Interesting that a carry permit counts as a voter ID but not a library card. Libraries are not represented by lobbyists unlike the NRA. Gun lovers vote repub. Smart people vote democratic. The surrogate Romney (owned by Adelson & the Kochs) are purchasing the election.

Oh yeah and these people want a black person gone from the White House.

There is something unseemly about Romney talking about cutting social security, Medicare, and Medicaid while he enjoys 23 off shore accounts for the purposes of tax evasion. Oh but we the people should pay.

Oh yeah, America is a great country for right wing leeches who leach off me.

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 6:11

Back to the topic...not long ago, the Christian Radio hosts were calling national Photo ID Cards , "the mark of the devil"...the "666" that the Bible spoke of.....but now, the born-agains are right in line with the voter ID card idea....they flipped over, now that the Koch Brothers have explained the real reasons for the voter ID program.

The "limited government" advocates now want everyone to carry their papers at all times...and be ready to present them to the authorities, on demand....these folks are closet statists.

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 6:12

Right on, Moonglow!

By: dargent7 on 8/15/12 at 6:18

Loner: "A huge flock of crows..."? You mean your two ex-mother in laws stopped in to visit?

By: dargent7 on 8/15/12 at 6:21

In USA Today's paper, it's stated 90 million Americans "won't vote"..."too busy, "it won't matter", "nothing changes..... "both candidates stink....
1/3rd the country won't vote?
Pathetic.

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 6:33

I was referring to a group of Felician nuns, Darge....just kidding.

My mother-in-law was a saint...no kidding....she's up in Heaven right now...no doubt.

Yeah, voter apathy is bad enough, the new voter intimidation program should squelch the votes of additional millions....both major parties and the media like to work with a small playing field and limited players...it's easier and more profitable that way...soon we'll get it down to 2 or 3 "battleground states".....as the last gasps of representative democracy are stifled by the special interests....but not to worry...the NFL season is getting underway.

By: yogiman on 8/15/12 at 6:45

Loner,

You're arguing Ryan's going to college on a "welfare" check because of his father's early passing. Is that such a different form of education than Barack Obama's education being paid for by his being a foreign student?

Isn't it more logical to pay for a citizen's education that a foreign student's education?

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 6:52

Unlike Paul Ryan, President Obama is not trying to terminate social programs from which he personally benefited...huge difference between those two positions.

Clarence Thomas is another Republican hypocrite who now despises social programs that he once benefited from...there are plenty of other examples of this sort of Republican sleaziness.

By: Beernazi on 8/15/12 at 7:04

http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/birthers/occidental.asp

yogi, you have been shown this before. Quit spreading lies.

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 7:07

Educating President Obama's father was a good idea...he was a foreign student and I do not think that the US taxpayers paid for his education here....Barack Obama is a native born, natural born, full-blown, US citizen...Obama went to college the old fashioned way, he earned scholarships to he best universities, by way of scholastic excellence.

I would bet that Obama's IQ is well above that of Willard or the Wiener, former Oscar Mayer Wienermobile Pilot.

A high IQ does not guarantee that a POTUS will do the right thing every time...but it can sometimes prevent a POTUS from doing some stupid things. And presidential stupidity can be dangerous and deadly, as we saw with the bumbling junior Bush.

Willard put his global "diplomacy skills" on display. recently....give this clown the hook...he bombed.

By: parnell3rd on 8/15/12 at 7:10

And as Barrack Husseine Obama guts our military with cuts, a Russian nuclear subs sit's in our gulf for a month, Russian jets penatrate Alaskan and California airspace. They can have California, leave Alaska alone! I kid I kid!
But look at what our beloved Muslim Leader has done. If he gets one more term we'll be celebrating all Muslim holiday's just as the Obama does in the white house.

By: Moonglow1 on 8/15/12 at 7:19

Moonglow1: Paul Ryan is worth $7 mil. He lives off of inheritances. A student of Ayn Rand, the Jewish refugee from Russia and an x lover of the most ugly Alan Greenspan who helped cause the biggest recession of all time. Ryan is now back peddling because Rand was an atheist.

What a group of idiots-Ryan is on par with Palin. Dumb, dumb, and dumber.

By: yogiman on 8/15/12 at 7:24

Correct, Beernazi,

I have seen that before. And I have pointed out Snopes is an Obama supporter. How about checking the reference I made at 12:54. Is that an impersonator speaking for Obama?

By: yogiman on 8/15/12 at 7:32

Loner,

Your 8:07 comments makes you "sound" like a brother in your comments about his legality. Where did you get such information?

Can you explain why he's faking all of his papers? Why doesn't he save himself a few million by showing them?

By: Ummm... on 8/15/12 at 7:37

Romney's father, George Romney, released 12 years of his tax returns when he ran for president, but Mitt will only release two? There must be something really, really bad in there if he's willing to stonewall this way- maybe even something criminal.

By: dargent7 on 8/15/12 at 7:42

Yogi: Your racism is appaling. Ryan's dad dying at age 12 "bests" Obama's dad's dying at age 12? You kiddin' this bored?

By: Rasputin72 on 8/15/12 at 7:51

There is no question that each and everyone who posts on this board is solidly entrenched in their philosphy of life, not to mention their voting preference. Nothing any of us can say or post has a ghost of a chance of changing our stance on philosphy or voting preference.

Just as an academic question however, I would for my own edification like to know why it is important for Romney to show his tax returns? I obviously have an opinion as to why, but think it would be entertaining and perhaps even informative to know the reasons.

By: jvh2b on 8/15/12 at 7:58

Good Morning gang.

So yeah - over not having a new topic of the day.

I would like to point out (mainly to Ben and Bud) that there is currently a system in place for restricting votor fraud. You can't vote w/o EITHER your ID or your votor registration card. one presented you sign in. A poll worker isn't gonna let you sign in twice either.
A photo ID isn't goning to stop a felon from voting Ben and frankly, you need to lay off the kool aid for somehow thinking that...your normally a very smart man Ben.

Bud's ignorance speaks for itself...seniors can have a drivers licence to get all of the things you mentioned...and NOT have a phot on it. For someone who is a senior herself...she sure doesn't know much about it.

Yogi - blah blah blah - head so far up your a$ you can see your tonsils. I hope your head explodes in Nov when Obama wins.

Ok feel better after that rant - hope everyone is doing well!

By: slacker on 8/15/12 at 8:04

Not so fast on IQ Loner.. I'd take Mittins & Pauly, in a face-off with Obama & Joe on Jeopardy. Poor Joe would be hoping the category on ''States of the U.S.'' didn't pop-up, that one always stumps lovable Joe.
Sadly, Obama would be searching for the teleprompter with the answers, and Alex would tell him ''surry.''

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 8:08

Welcome back jvh2b...well said.

Rasp is right, nobody here is going to change their mind about much of anything...so, why do we do it? I dunno...venting, perhaps. It helps keep my synapses firing...I do it for therapy...and shitz & giggles....just like a dog licking his own genitals...we do it, because we can.

By: yogiman on 8/15/12 at 8:09

Well, Rasputin72,

Romney should show his papers because his father did. You know, like father like son. Perhaps that's the reason our fellow posters don't think Obama should show his because his father didn't.

And, after all, his father wasn't required to because he wasn't an American citizen. So is Barry following his father?

By: gdiafante on 8/15/12 at 8:10

Yeah, right slacker. Romney would only give answers that he thinks a particular audience wants to hear and when he's wrong, he'd ask Alex Trebek to deport himself so an American can do his job.

Give me a freakin' break...

By: govskeptic on 8/15/12 at 8:13

Once we get all of you properly identified "We gonna put you in chains".
Chains of freedom versus the current Chains of the Democratic Party.

By: yogiman on 8/15/12 at 8:15

jvh2b,

Unless the law has been changed, you must have a photo on your driver's license in Tennessee. You have the option of having a photo or not after reaching the age of 65.

By: Captain Nemo on 8/15/12 at 8:19

By: Ask01 on 8/14/12 at 7:22

I believe the only people who can identify with Willard are the 1%.

Not to mention the yogi, budlight and lets don’t forget the, ‘I think I am royal, Rasputin’types lapping for attention of the rich.

By: dargent7 on 8/15/12 at 8:20

Romney has already given so many "fo paws" you cannot keep count:
"I don't care about the poor..."
"I enjoy firing people..."
"My wife drove two Cadillacs..."
"I'l bet you $10,000 on that one..."
"Iran will never obtain a nuclear weapon..."
"On day one I'll abolish Planned Parenthood".
A wolf in sheep's clothing? No. He's out there, clearly, tax returns and his Mormonism notwithstanding, and if America wants this a-hole to be the next President, then go for it.
After GW Bush, TWICE, who really gives a sh**?

By: Captain Nemo on 8/15/12 at 8:25

By: Ask01 on 8/15/12 at 4:30
The nation would be better served if we required a minimum IQ of voters and perhaps a certificate of mental competency.

That would certainly leave yogi out of the picture.

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 6:54
Darge: They are spending so much on airport security that they can't afford better equipment and personnel to service the aircraft themselves?

That was a private air company.

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 8:29

Slack...you got a bet....now, if we could only access those IQ scores we could settle on who's buying the next drink..so, I Googled it.

Source:
http://www.actuarialoutpost.com/actuarial_discussion_forum/showthread.php?t=152146

Snippet:
Default IQ's of presidential candidates
Democratic
Barack Obama - Estimated IQ Score Range: 121 - 137
Hillary Rodham Clinton - IQ Score = 140
Joe Biden - IQ Score = 121
Chris Dodd's IQ Score = 123
John Edwards' IQ Score = 124
Mike Gravel - Estimated IQ Score Range: 115 - 122
Dennis Kucinich's Estimated IQ Score Range: 116 - 126
Bill Richardson's Estimated IQ Score Range: 124 - 133

Republican
Sam Brownback's IQ Score of 110
Rudy Giuliani - His combined College Board scores, 569 in verbal and 504 in math, were twenty-seven points shy of 1100, and quite ordinary. So let's do the math. That means his combined college SAT score was 1073, which gives Rudy Giuliani an IQ Score of 123.
Mike Huckabee's Estimated IQ Score Range: 110 - 125
Duncan Hunter's Estimated IQ Score Range: 120 - 130
John McCain's Estimated IQ Score Range: 115 - 125
Ron Paul's Estimated IQ Score Range: 130 - 140
Mitt Romney - IQ Score = 122
Tom Tancredo - IQ Score = 119
Fred Thompson - IQ Score = 123

Looks like it's Hillary and Ron Paul leading the pack.

(end snippet)

Default IQ scores were derived by using SAT scores. The source did not list Paul Ryan's IQ scores....Obama is listed at 121-137...Willard is listed with a 121....Joe Biden rates a 121....unless Ryan is considerably brighter than Obama, the Dems win the IQ Sweepstakes...if the source is accurate....and if SAT scores are an indicator of intelligence.

He is just like so many right-wing fringe, Loner. Once he gets his benefits the hell with others.

By: yogiman on 8/15/12 at 8:34

What have you been drinking, dargent7? Or haven't you sobered up from last night yet?

You accuse me of being a racist because I oppose a usurper in office. I accuse you of being a racist because the only reason you can have in favoring Obama is his race. You certainly don't know who in the hell he is.

When did he verify his legality? He hasn't, and won't.

Loner the Devil won’t look the evil part; it will be in the form of a Jerry Farwell, Pat Roberson or budlight.

“Gore who” say the Nazi troll.

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 8:40

The troll demonstrates Einstein's observations concerning human insanity...the pathetic creature repeats the same nonsense over and over...each time expecting a different result. The old "usurper" nonsense.

But is the troll nuts...or just a racist? Not that it matters, I suppose; we should ignore his ravings...for his own good....but dammit his BS is irritating....no question about that.

By: budlight on 8/15/12 at 8:41

Well you people need to change the subject and talk about the "I'm an illegal alian and you can't stop me" bus that is coming to Nashville to flaunt their liberal agenda of sneaking across the border and staying here. So do you think that the government should just channel all the tax money straight to the illegals?

What is it about the word "illegal" that they don't get? Oh that's right. They don't need to know what it means. They get a pass from Obama and the libs.

Immigration, immigrants are one thing. Illegals are really a totally different subject than "immigration" and "legal immigrants". Why should one person cue up in line, fill out the right paperwork, pay their dues and do the right thing while hundreds of others sneak into our country emboldened and enabled by Obama and his cronies?

Doesn't make sense to me. Oh well.

By: BenDover on 8/15/12 at 8:43

Typical morning... when you distill out the yogi and bud posts and responses to said posts (as I always do) all that remains is a circle jerk of White House spin... some seemingly from the direct source and others sauced up by the likes of Maddow vitriol... with an occasional interruption from the right smacked and slapped away because it might disturb what is hoped to be a long-awaited concurrent climax on election day.

In short... reddit light without the pictures of kittens.

I do enjoy the sometimes poetic wanderings of the dabblers who seek to incite rather than just chant the Obama's Prayer in unison. Sometimes there's a splash of rhetoric that I disagree with but that strikes the senses and brings an entertainment value to our site. That's why I keep coming back I guess.

By: jvh2b on 8/15/12 at 8:46

Uh yogi - thats exactly what I said above about the photo ID's...put on your reading glasses, engage brain (whats left of it at least), re-read it and get back to me.

By: yogiman on 8/15/12 at 8:32

Can you explain why he's faking all of his papers? Why doesn't he save himself a few million by showing them?

Why can’t you prove any of this and why are you wasting time here on a few people and not crossing America to spread the news?

The answer is that you have no proof and are spreading lies to gain attention for you and your hatred for dark skin people.

By: Captain Nemo on 8/15/12 at 8:54

By: budlight on 8/15/12 at 9:41
Well you people need to change the subject and talk about the "I'm an illegal alian (sic) and you can't stop me" bus that is coming to Nashville to flaunt their liberal agenda of sneaking across the border and staying here.

LOL

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 9:00

Are you referring to my Neo-shamanolgy related posts, Ben? Hopefully, you enjoy hearing about what my crystal balls have to say.

I agree, there is plenty of entertainment value here.

By: BenDover on 8/15/12 at 9:02

Loner, your crystal balls are the dawn to this darkness.

By: yogiman on 8/15/12 at 9:04

So what is the average IQ score, Loner? And just wondering, what are the IQ scores of the people who so willingly accept someone they don't even know as their President?

You probably will have a choice in November: A Mormon, or a Muslim. Personally, I will choose the Mormon because the Mormon faith doesn't think you should be killed if you don't change to their religion like the Muslims of the Islam faith.

This election is quite simple, if you want a President, vote for Mitt Romney. If you want a dictator, vote for Barry Soetoro aka Barack Obama.

A deeper question, Loner, is why this whole question has been on the fence for so long. It should be a frightening thing that Congress has just sat on their a$$es without bringing it to a absolute assertion.

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 9:06

Glad that you appreciate my schlepping my balls to the White House spin circle jerk, Ben Dover. The balls do glow, providing some light, without heat....like the ass-end of a glow worm....science is baffled by the process....Pagan Power!

By: BenDover on 8/15/12 at 9:08

Sometimes I have to just leave here and go to the poll sites like Gallup to remind myself that for an incumbent who's spent a trillion a year over the deficit trend to buy favor with the voters, Obama is really sucking the hind teat.

By: Loner on 8/15/12 at 9:10

That's what we need in Congress...more absolute assertions...to complement their insidious insertions....like I said, entertainment value.
