Up for Debate: 'Times-Picayune,' other dailies hit with cuts

Friday, May 25, 2012 at 1:46am

Similar stories of cuts in the newspaper industry have unfolded periodically over the past several years, but Thursday's news that The Times-Picayune in New Orleans and other papers owned by Advance Publications Inc. would suffer such cuts, with the daily T-P cutting back to three prints a week, echoed loudly far beyond the city and drew widespread reaction. As readers, how do you react to such news, particularly these announced cuts? Are you worried about the consequences of the daily newspaper fading away and the shifting focus to online-only publications? How would living in a city without a daily newspaper (these cuts will make New Orleans the largest such city) affect you life?

yogi, if you are willing to accept Lithium treatment daily, you will find peace, and bring peace to others.

That's awesome! My new slacker quote.

Slacker and fellows.......I had a Schwinn Black Panther the best bicycle in West Nashville. I earned every dime of the money to pay for it. Later on I paid for at age 15 a Harley Davidson 125. It was the envy of everyone except the basketball and football coach. At age 16 I had a 1948 Plymouth paid for. It was a great time to be an entrepreneur......At that time a boy with good genes and a great work ethic could separate himself from those that wanted to "get on" or float through life.

Once I found out that the things I enjoyed could be bought or nurtured with good health and money I was off to the races. Way a trip it has been.

I don't wear white gloves or have a man Jeeves but it has been 40 years since I had a callous on my hand caused by manual labor. Now I have had a few caused by holding a Tennis racket or a golf club.

I owe it all to never letting dignity get in the way of making money!

Sorry, slacker, I don't believe that stuff would work on me. I've got a hard head and firm mind for a brain. That stuff only effects a thin skull with a soft brain, like yours.

Lithium is sometimes used to treat certain blood disorders, depression, schizophrenia (a mental illness that causes disturbed or unusual thinking and strong or inappropriate emotions, such outrage at not believing that the president was born in Hawaii), disorders of impulse control (inability to resist the urge to post the same non-sense over and over), and certain mental illnesses in children. Talk to your doctor about the risks of using this medication for your condition.

Did you see that "birth certificate" the Arizona Sec. of State "accepted", bfra? It's that fake certificate Sheriff Arpaio has shown.

Two of the men froim Sheriff's Cold Possee have gone to Hawaii to the the real one. They don't have a real one in Hawaii.

Tell me, why have the Kenyan legislators noted him as being a Kenyan. Why do they have signs recognizing him as being born in Kenya.

Did his grandmother lie when she said she was in the room with his mother when he was born?

With such strong backing of Obama (if that's his name) I hope you guys are ready for a communist government. At my age, I won't have too many years to worry about it, and possibly some of you, but if you have any children or grandchildren, I feel sorry for them along with mine.

It's ironic, and its sad Obama got to pull it off before any one of the state legislatures began to question him. His reason for success was congress for allowing it to happen without question.

They can only be part of that takeover program.

I rest my case.

BEERNAZI..........I know that several of you get annoyed with YOGI. I for one enjoy some of his rants and consider him one of the stalwarts of this 15 member forum. Having said that no one could appreciate the humor and the text in which you presented your LITHIUM post more than I. With apologies to Yogi, it was beautifully presented.

Why, thank you, Rasputin.

By: yogiman on 5/25/12 at 2:27

Beernazi,

It's hell talking about something you apparently have so little knowledge. Have you seen that "birth ceritficate" that was shown by Obama and is an obvious fake? Where did it come from when he said the one he was showing on internet was the only one he had. There's many points on the issue.

Consider the fact he said he could not get one. The State of Hawaii would not allow him to have it. But, lo and behold, he found one to present a week before a book exposing him became public. You know, the one titled "Where's the Birth Certificate?" by Jerome Corsi; who did a lot of research on it. And apparently you haven't read his autobiography "Dreams from My Father" which was written before he "decided" he wanted to run for the presidency.

History tells us the truth will soon be known. Much is coming out now, Beernazi. Hang in there, maybe you'll learn something you're arguing about.

By: yogiman on 5/25/12 at 2:40

Rasputin72,

Call me ranting all you wish. But I don't feel like I'm ranting. I feel like an educator simply trying to teach someone on a subject they should know but don't wan't to acknowledge the point of how ignorant they are on it and simply don't want to learn on it. They are simply refusing to acknowledge their ignorance on it.

All you have to do on the Obama issue is simply do a little history research. And of course, be able to do a little thinking.

My big question has been: Why would you vote for someone you don't know and who refuses to identify themselves.

How can you know his legal name? How can you know his birth place? Was Barack Hussein Obama [Sr.] really his father? Comparing their looks should make you wonder.

By: Beernazi on 5/25/12 at 2:57

It bears repeating:

yogi, go see your doctor for heaven's sake! And yes, you are ranting - the same damn thing day in and day out. Look at yourself, man! Get a grip!

By: Rasputin72 on 5/25/12 at 3:01

Yogi...........There are a lot of things that bother me about Barack Hussein Obama. I would however like to think that if the sleuths of this country can find the letter bomber and the terrorist that destroyed the world trade center surely they could find proof that Obama was not an American.

You need to come to grips with the Obama Presidency. The man is going to be re-elected and re=elected easily in November. Please understand that there are 47% of the people in the United States who pay no federal income tax. These people and the class envy people are majority enough to elect a Watusi from Zimbabwee if he promised them enough.

Protect yourself of course but straining against the chains is a waste of time and energy.

By: Beernazi on 5/25/12 at 3:12

Rasputin, I understand your frustration in regard to non-tax payers. However, most of the people who pay neither federal income tax nor payroll taxes are low-income people who are elderly, unable to work due to a serious disability, or students, most of whom subsequently become taxpayers. Moreover, low-income households as a group do, in fact, pay federal taxes. Congressional Budget Office data show that the poorest fifth of households paid an average of 4.0 percent of their incomes in federal taxes in 2007, the latest year for which these data are available — not an insignificant amount given how modest these households’ incomes are; the poorest fifth of households had average income of $18,400 in 2007. The next-to-the bottom fifth — those with incomes between $20,500 and $34,300 in 2007 — paid an average of 10.6 percent of their incomes in federal taxes. Even these figures greatly understatelow-income households’ total tax burden because these households also pay substantial state and local taxes. Data from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy show that the poorest fifth of households paid a stunning 12.3 percent of their incomes in state and local taxes in 2011.

I really dislike those who evade taxes and the leeches who game the welfare systems, so don't get me wrong on this issue.

By: Beernazi on 5/25/12 at 3:19

The reality is that the income tax is one of a number of types of taxes that individuals pay, both over the course of their lifetimes and in a given year, and it makes little sense to treat it as though it were the only tax that matters. Some 82 percent of working households pay more in payroll taxes than in federal income taxes. In fact, low- and moderate-income people pay a much larger share of their incomes in federal payroll taxes than high-income people do: taxpayers in the bottom 20 percent of the income scale paid an average of 8.8 percent of their incomes in payroll taxes in 2007, compared to 1.6 percent of income for those in the top 1 percent of the income distribution.

Since you are doing well for yourself, you should already know that there is a cap for FICA that currently stands somewhere around $105K of income annually, then you no longer pay into it. So, as you increase your income, you're paying a less percentage of tax.

By: bfra on 5/25/12 at 3:20

Beernazi - IMO most people understand this and don't consider them selves better than others, especially publicize it on an open forum. Nazi - Good information!

By: bfra on 5/25/12 at 3:21

Nazi - Have a fun & safe weekend!

By: Beernazi on 5/25/12 at 3:26

Thanks! You too, bfra!

By: Rasputin72 on 5/25/12 at 4:05

You present yourself very well. I do not dispute the data though I am unfamilar with it. My point is that 47% of those of voting age do not pay FEDERAL INCOME TAX. Whatever their circumstances cheats, liars, truly needy or low income. They are going to vote for the party that takes from me and gives to them. They for whatever reason are the new majority.

By the way there is a cap on the amount of social security tax that I pay. There is also a cap on the amount of social security that can earn at retirement. You want to raise the social securtiy tax then raise the amount I can draw at retirement. . hear these arguments constantly but the arguments always wind up as I want more of your income because I have not been as successful as you.

Believe me I know what is coming and it has nothing to do with logic and fairness it has to do with there are just too many people for whatever reason that will fill the ballot box to pad their pockets with my money. I understand fully that the majortiy rule.

I have no quarrel with your position. Perhaps were I in the same situation I would feel much like yourself.

By: yogiman on 5/25/12 at 4:53

I don't need litium, Beernazi, but it sure looks like you and your fellow posters do. Call me what you wish, but I'm going to continue to yell loud and clear about a man sitting in the Oval Office that refuses to identify himself.

You fellow don't seem to be able to see the picture that's bright and clear on him. And I'd say none of you have even thought about the issue.

If you want to keep the USA as the nation it was before Barry Soetoro aka Barack Obama took over, you damn well better wake up. That is, unless you're will to accept a communist nation.

By: Loner on 5/26/12 at 7:20

Rasp, perhaps you should consider migrating to some tycoon utopia? A safe haven for the productive class.

Obviously, a man of your wealth, prestige, culture and connections must have the ability to move offshore during their golden years...to a place where they can spend their hard-earned money without fear of reprisal or scorn.

You sound like a burned-out kind of tycoon....no longer satisfied by Grey Poupon that comes with a hefty sales tax....and a sneer from the cashier.

For a fee, I can locate a few potential choices for you...believe me, men like you are welcomed in many places on this planet.....it's a big world, Rasp...time to go jet set ex-pat?

By: Rasputin72 on 5/26/12 at 8:31

LONER.......You make some excellent suggestions. I am as you say "burned out" I have made some transfers on the financial behalf of my gransons. As for myself it requires a lot more effort and expertise than you miight imagine to locate money offshore without becoming a criminal of sorts. I never made a dime criminally and do not have the energy left to fight through all of red-tape to legally shift money "offshore" as you suggest.

I prefer to pontificate my feelings and continue to live my life to the fullest in this country. Were I younger I in my forties with the assets I have I would certainly be establishing myself in Australia for the long haul.

I do not think the United States will fall off the face of earth in one fellswoop. I think the demise will come as it has over the last twenty years. One small step at a time.

I am looking forward to seeing what happens with the commoners in Spain and Greece as they vote to keep their entitlements rather than pay their debts. It will give me some guidance as to the path that the voting majority will take in this country over the next decade.

By: Rasputin72 on 5/26/12 at 8:38

LONER........I have homes in areas of the United States that are as close to being a "utopia" as you suggest. In one of the clubs to which I belong in the mountains we for sport one day tried to identify a member who would admit to being a democrat. Our search proved futile.

Thanks again for thinking of me and how I might close my eyes to the folly of this country.

By: yogiman on 5/26/12 at 10:22

Hey, Loner, refer him to me. I'm a licensed real estate broker. I'll slip you a few buck for your referal.

By: yogiman on 5/26/12 at 1:41

Rasputin72,

I was just scanning yesterday's posts and in reference to your 4:01 post you made a comment, "if the sleuths of thes country can find the letter bomber..." Yes they could.

One thing you and the other posters on this site apparently don't see it this is purely a political matter. Both parties are going do the same road. I have made note of it several times but it doesn't seem to reach the brains of these posters.

I think their skulls are too thick for any raw material to go through them. Or they are dumbocraps that see nothing wrong with a thief in the White House.

By: yogiman on 5/26/12 at 2:02

Beernazi,

Since you've got a long weekend to have some serious thoughts, may I give you a few things to think about: You favorite man Obama hired 22 personal servants for his beloved wife. He hired a personal dog trainer for his pet at 'only' 200 thousand plus... or out tax money.

And I wonder why he and Michelle disbarred their attorney licenses with no given reason. Obama has used multiple Social Security numbers. The one he's using now was issued to a man from Connecticut where Obama had never been when he started using it. And, oh yeah, the man had died before Obama started using it.

Have you ever wondered why he suggested we re-write the National Anthem?

Is the law official that was signed by an auto-pen without him being there?

Can you explain why the current Governor of Hawaii (a long time personal family friend) can't find Obama's official birth certificate in the Dept of Health?

Have a great weekend, Beernazi. Don't drink too much, you might get too drunk to think.
