Should potential tension with donors steer Vanderbilt's decision regarding its all-comers policy?

Vanderbilt is a jock-strap college with a religion problem..Hopefully, the pissed-off bigoted alumni will quit financing the brain-destroying football program at Vanderbilt. As for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, let them go to hell.....let them burn their jocks in protest.....like Jesus did.

By: Ask01 on 5/21/12 at 3:46

There is so much at play here.

Why, if someone is an atheist, would they have any desire to join a group, which has in the name "Christian" other than to agitate the membership?

On the other hand, if a "Christian" organization is truly following the precepts of the faith they profess to follow, as I understand them, that organization should be reaching out to those outside the faith to show them the way.

Beyond that, even if an 'outsider' does join the group and seek a leadership position, nothing dictates the membership must elect that person.

I believe this is truly a case of much ado about nothing.

Let everyone join whatever group they wish. This should have some interesting outcomes when a follower of the Hitler Youth applies to the Jewish Heritage group. The national news and late night comedians will have an abundance of material and locally, the news personalities will be kept busy.

By: Ummm... on 5/21/12 at 4:25

Speaking as a card-carrying member of the Vanderbilt University chapter of the Hitler Youth, I don't foresee any problems.

By: Ask01 on 5/21/12 at 4:35

OK, Ummm..., good one.

I just couldn't think of anything more outlandish at that hour of the morning.

I still believe this is a story generated to stir up controversy.

By: yogiman on 5/21/12 at 5:34

What makes you think he's joking, Ask01? I believe he's telling the truth.

By: bfra on 5/21/12 at 5:38

Ignore the troll!

By: gdiafante on 5/21/12 at 5:39

Because we understand Ummm and his/her sense of humor. Now if you had said that yogi, I'd believe it to be fact.

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 6:05

This certainly is much ado about nothing, as Ask_01 (and Shakespeare) stated. In spite of that, the City Parer has carried several stories about this Kristian kerffuffle. Must be a very slow news day in Music City.

Religion, like sports is an "us versus them" deal....it's xenophobic by nature....in sports, one does not turn the other cheek or practice the Golden Rule....it's all about winning, by defeating your opponent....the Fellowship for Christian Athletes understands all that...after all, Jesus of Nazareth was one hell of an athlete....he had his 12-member team out there everyday working to defeat Satan....they collected alms, they organized mass gatherings...they quit their day jobs and went full time, professional, Judeo-Jock.....sweatin' fer the Lord.....whuppin' ass for the Messiah.

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 6:08

s/h/b: City Paper...mea culpa....Satan made me do it.

By: gdiafante on 5/21/12 at 6:09

There for a second I thought you stubbed your toe or something...

By: Rasputin72 on 5/21/12 at 6:11

This is going to be a great morning! LONER.....ASK01........and UMMM ...have already hit homers and it is just after 7 o'clock.

I am beginning to love the many tributaries that the divisive nature of this country is taking. The only commonality that I see in this country is the need for that real nectar of the Gods called the "dollar"

Somedays I wish I could stick around and see all the fireworks that is in store for this country.

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 6:13

Sorry, Gd, when I lead the cheering section...I tend to get carried away...I'll try to tone it down....thanks, I needed that.

It's Protest Monday, once again....I gotta leave extra early this morning....so, what are we really going to discuss here this fine morning, Nashville?

By: gdiafante on 5/21/12 at 6:17

I am beginning to love the many tributaries that the divisive nature of this country is taking. The only commonality that I see in this country is the need for that real nectar of the Gods called the "dollar"

True. Everything revolves around money. That's why I find it amusing when people think we're a Christian nation.

Unless they are referring to someone they worship named Christian...I know they are not talking about Jesus' teachings...

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 6:34

Christ had a playbook.....he was doing great...then he got sacked....ejected from the game by the Roman Officials.

"In God We Trust" is printed on our folding money.....the "eye of God" sitting atop that pyramid is our cult symbol....we worship the green...not the living planet, the greenback dollar...that green.

We have financial gurus who act as High Priests of the Pecuniary......and the Fed Chairman, he's the Pope. When we pay our taxes, we are participating in the offertory.....if we get a tax refund, it is by way of the grace of our God.

The US mint is the Vatican....commercial banks are our churches......The Federal Reserve is the College of Cardinals.

The POTUS is actually a layman..an Elder who gets to sprinkle the Holy Water and burn the incense....it's the top honor in our finance-based faith.

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 6:44

Rasp, TN is already preparing for the dissolution of the union...they have plans to mint their own currency...their own "nectar", if you will.....there will be a lot of bad nectar out there, once the Senators run for the exits and the Governors seal their borders....and the Stars & Bars comes out of the mothballs.

By: govskeptic on 5/21/12 at 6:49

Loner: You are totally full of it on this issue. Your comparisons thus far
sound like a deranged madman off his meds for a complete weekend!

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 6:49

...and thank you, Rasp, for the kind words.

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 6:57

Just as the warmth of Rasputin's kind words heats-up my cold-blooded bio-systems, Govskeptic goes septic, sprinkling effluent on the glowing embers of praise....he wrote: "Loner: You are totally full of it on this issue. Your comparisons thus far sound like a deranged madman off his meds for a complete weekend!"

Spot on! But I'm taking my meds right now....should kick in anytime now, Gov.....you are very perceptive this morning.....I went to church yesterday....that could be a factor too.

By: yogiman on 5/21/12 at 7:02

It's funny, gdiafanti, you knew so quickly Ummm was joking on his/her comment to Ask01but II intentionally posted what I believed.

What gives you that knowledge, because I'm so strong on my argument Obama is a thief of the White House? You make me laugh.

Want another good laugh? Check out that social science teacher's debate about Obama and Romney with a student in North Carolina. You should find it on the Drudge report.

By: gdiafante on 5/21/12 at 7:05

It's not my fault you don't understand simple humor and sarcasm, yogi. 8 decades should have given you a little common sense. But, alas, it was not to be.

By: gdiafante on 5/21/12 at 7:09

And FYI, I lived in NC for close to three years...There's a reason I haven't been back in 20 years and it ain't the climate.

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 7:10

At Vandy, can descendants of Union Army vets now join The Sons of The Confederacy chapter there?

I f so, I'm moving down there....I'll be matriculating and infiltrating....I'll be on a mission.....to destroy from within...... Mine eyes have seen the Glory, of the Coming of the Lord....he's trampling on the vineyards, where the grapes of wrath are stored..."

General Sherman.....are you with me?

By: gdiafante on 5/21/12 at 7:14

First, I never realized how dirty those lyrics are...shame on Julia Howe...

Second, can the owner of the vineyard sue God? I mean, destruction of private property is no laughing matter...

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 7:17

...and the GRAPES....think of the GRAPES....the utter inhumanity of it.....no grapes means no wine.....the Deluge was bad enough....but THIS?

By: slacker on 5/21/12 at 7:20

Loner, I've gotta ''pile on'' you with the skeptic. Vandy is not a jock strap school. Vandy likes to think its ivy League south. Actually its football program should be in the Ivy League division, but they stay in the SEC for the financual rewards.
Seems to me, on todays college campuses, politically correct culture, will win out against Christian culture. The Christian groups would be better off, moving off campus.
Get away from the: ''I'm gonna join your group, and you're gonna like it ''crowd.
Move off campus and tell em' to go **** themselves.

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 7:24

Yeah, General Sherman left no vineyard un-trampled upon...."Old Purple Foot" his men lovingly called him.....those were the good old days, when poor, illiterate, white men fought and died, so that rich folks could exercise the right to own African Negro slaves...they ended up losing their grapes and their vineyards.....all that remains are sour grapes...old twisted vines, bitter fruit.

By: gdiafante on 5/21/12 at 7:24

I didn't catch that remark the first time, but yeah...Vandy a jock-strap school? lol

Then again, Cutler did go there...

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 7:29

That's OK, Slack....pile on....the leader of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is the football team's number one jock....and he's getting all the media attention....makes the school look like a jock school, IMO....and if the alumni are donating all that money for the tens of millions in proposed football-related capital projects, then that too makes Vandy look like a jock-school....Penn State-like.....the alumns rule and football is the tool.

By: yogiman on 5/21/12 at 7:33

I believe my 8 decades of life on this earth has given me more knowledge of common sense, and sense of humor, than you can imagine having in your present stage of life.

But hang in there, young man, you'll get smarter as the years go by. Experience will be the best teacher you ever had.

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 7:34

They should form an "All-Cummers Club" at Vandy....for the poly-amorous students....just to raise eyebrows and ruffle some plumage.....to yank a few chains etc.

By: gdiafante on 5/21/12 at 7:37

Sorry yogi. In my experience, you're just a simple-minded, easily influenced, fearful bigot who is in complete denial that this country can freely elect someone who doesn't look like you.

You're a dinosaur, and we all know what happens to dinosaurs.

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 7:41

Slack, I gotta agree, if the Christians...or any other club.... do not like new policy of inclusion, they should move off campus entirely....I suspect that these clubs get some kind of perks...maybe funding from the university? That may be the real reason for the squabbling....I don't know if these on-campus clubs get financial subsides (stipends?) or not...anybody got the inside scoop on that?

By: Ummm... on 5/21/12 at 7:46

Loner, I'm not one to quibble, but isn't it, "trampling out the vintage," not, "trampling on the vineyards?"

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 7:48

I'm gonna cut the troll some Slack...went to church yesterday....he has been fooled by experts....he's been exploited...but he has allowed himself to be fooled...he is engaging in self-bullshitization.....he now seeks out the kind of BS that appeals to his tastes...we all do the same thing, to one degree or another....Yogi's "problem" is that he is a single-issue whiner.....nobody likes whiners...single issue whiners are especially annoying.

If Yogi would just try to give it a rest, he would be helping himself and sparing the rest of us the grief. But, since he enjoys trolling and annoying us, I doubt if he will change....all we can do is ignore him.

By: slacker on 5/21/12 at 7:49

Maybe the sympathetic alumni, that regularly donate to Vanderbilt, will shift their donations to support the newly-formed off campus groups.

By: gdiafante on 5/21/12 at 7:50

I wouldn't sweat that line, Ummm...the next seems to indicate that God is either an X-men or an Avenger.

That should be the next Avenger movie...Thor and God fight, an errant lighting bolt destroys the Earth, God exiles himself to the far end of the universe where he and Loki team up and find another planet to terrorize.

By: slacker on 5/21/12 at 7:55

Ummm.. they had to change ''trampling on the beer garden'' because of rhyme issues.
Originally it was ''trampling on the pecker-heads.''

By: slacker on 5/21/12 at 7:57

Honky was considered politically incorrect.

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 8:03

Dammit, Ummm, there goes the whole danged house of cards I was building....yeah, I Googled it, here it is:

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:
His day is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His day is marching on.

I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,
Since God is marching on."

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Since God is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
While God is marching on.

He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave,
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave,
Our God is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Our God is marching on.

Looks like the feet of God were crushing the casks of wine...an entire vintage of bad wine...wine made from the grapes of wrath. Apparently He left the grapes and the wineries intact....they are still pressing those grapes in Dixie....there is a market for that stuff....the Big Feet may have to finish the job.

By: dargent7 on 5/21/12 at 8:05

I use to refer to the downtown bars in Nashville as "honky-tonks", and until The Tennessean went by way of Facebook, they'd ban the phrase.... I thought I'd get around it by spelling it, "honkey", but they banned that one too.
I did use the "N" word quite often to describe my upbringing in Detroit...that went thru, ok.

By: dargent7 on 5/21/12 at 8:06

L'ner: We could discuss England's answer to the Kennedy's. Early deaths, drug addiction, suicides.

By: BenDover on 5/21/12 at 8:09

This is BS. A Students Against Homosexuals group should no more have to allow gays than a Students for Homosexuals group should be required to accept homophobes. It's a freedom of association thing.

As for the ignorance of a Christian group shunning gays on the grounds of Christianity; that's a load of bunk. No need to elevate homosexuality over any other human malfeasance. If you check the bible Jesus had his greatest contempt for the pious preachers who put law over love. He never said one word about homosexuality so get over yourselves.

By: dargent7 on 5/21/12 at 8:13

...or, the Rutgers student, Ravi, facing jail time and/or deportation for filming his roommate kissing a guy and posting in on YouTube. He committed suicide 3 days later.
Charge: Bullying, hate crime, or sexual harrassment, or invasion of privacy, or just being a complete unmitigated a**-hole.

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 8:17

"As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal..." "Contemners"?

I Googled it:

"The word "contemner" is an old, seldom-used word that originates from Latin. It has two main meanings. The first definition is one who despises or scorns. The second is a legal term that refers to someone who intentionally disrupts legal proceedings.20 Although it would, at first glance, seem that the first definition applies, it is possible that the second would also apply. In Christianity, justification in the eyes of God is a legal term that means that one has received a pardon for crimes (e.g., sins) committed against Him.21 One is justified when one accepts by faith God's redeemer, Jesus Christ, as Lord and Savior.22 Those who contemn against Jesus will be dealt with on the Day of the Lord, as the sentence of eternal punishment/death is carried out at the White Throne Judgment.23 Those who accept God's justification through Jesus Christ receive grace (unmerited favor) and mercy from God.24 Hence the phrase "so with you My grace shall deal."

Yeah, I'd say that the US Civil War was a Holy War....the CSA thought that God was backing them up too.

By: slacker on 5/21/12 at 8:21

He was Loner. He changed his mind at Gettysburg.

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 8:25

You gotta ask, what is a university, a place of higher learning, doing in the club business anyway and anyhow?

I would agree with Ben's "freedom of association" argument, if these clubs had no official ties to the University whatsoever....the fact is, these are officially sanctioned clubs, they have the University's imprimatur and they enjoy the benefits associated with that relationship.

University policy is being forced upon some clubs, others freely accept the new paradigm. Those who wish to sever ties with the university are free to do so.

By: slacker on 5/21/12 at 8:29

Loner, fraternities & sororities are exempt, as they should be. The other groups should be allowed the same freedoms.

By: Loner on 5/21/12 at 8:32

Yeah, Slack, He had a change of heart at Gettysburg....but he kept His Southern followers in the dark....some still do not see the light....still cling to the idea that state rights trump human rights.....fascism with a Christian countenance.

Hey, I gotta go...taking the DJ-5 into Orleans County.....gonna Occupy Albion, once again.....later!

By: yogiman on 5/21/12 at 8:34

You obviously don't know me as well as you think you do, gdifante. If Barry would simply prove he is legally eligible [as a natural born citizen] for that office, which he refuses to do, I'd "shut up". He would be my president also. But he won't. Facts are facts: You didn't know who you was voting for in 2008, and you still don't know who he is. You don't even know his legal identity.

If he is, in fact, legally eligible, why has he spent well over a million dollars to keep every paper on him under lock and key?

Question: Why (regarding a book) did his publicity group identify him as being born in Kenya in 1991? Why was it repeated in that manner in 2007 before it was changed in 2008? Why has the Kenyan newspapers and legislature continued to identify him as Kenyan born?

By the Constitution, there is no way he could be, or have been, a natural born citizen with a foreign father.

And now they are talking about Romney bringing Marco Rubio in the race as VP on his ticket. Rubio is no more eligible than Obama. He was 4 years old when his parents became citizens. He is simply a native born citizen, not a natural born citizen by the Constitution.

Has congress made the decision, without the citizens agreement, to take the Constitution to the outhouse?

By: gdiafante on 5/21/12 at 8:42

I'll make it simple for you yogi: you're a stupid sack of sh!t, and other than that nut Sidney, no one here...I repeat no one here respects you or even takes you seriously anymore.

Obama is President. Don't like it? Leave. No one will mourn.
