Don’t force health care on everyone

My family has always been fortunate enough to have health insurance provided through my husband’s company. The co-pays have been low enough, and I’ve been very happy with the experience I’ve had with my insurance.

As a mother of two, I can’t imagine having to choose between taking my sick child to the doctor and buying food for my family. It is horrifying to me that some mothers actually have to make this decision because they can’t afford insurance.

It is unsettling that we are recognized as the wealthiest nation in the world, yet many people in our country aren’t able to receive necessary health care because of the high costs.

Something needs to be done in our country so that all families have medical care just like mine. I fully support any efforts to help the uninsured; but having had a positive experience with a private insurer, I don’t think government health care should be forced on everyone.

Those who prefer to keep their private insurance should have the choice of doing so, but not at the expense of a government plan.

Wait until your company backs out on you and you have the full load and see if you are still satisfied.

The USA is the "wealthiest Nation on earth"? Did I miss something, or are we bankrupt and $5., give or take a trillion, in debt?

By: idgaf on 6/19/09 at 4:33

TnCare should have taught us that we cannot afford what the snake oil salesman is trying to sell us.

People are dying from rationed care in Canada and the UK.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/19/09 at 5:34

Good morning.

idgaf please show proof of people dying in Canada.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/19/09 at 5:51

Maybe I should say "dying from rationed care", so as not to confuse you.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/19/09 at 6:03

Verbal Cartoon

Rush Limbaugh screams into the microphone and demands that Obama be impeached for killing a defenseless fly.

By: Loner on 6/19/09 at 6:22

Good morning, Nashville!

Another health care related LTE? This should get everyone's juices flowing this fine morning. As I said yesterday, we Americans have the best government that money can buy, so real reform is not likely, the key lawmakers are all on the take, the special interest groups call the shots, the public interest is all but ignored..

Corruption at the highest levels of the federal government is routinely tolerated,as both major parties are equally guilty of betraying the public trust. Opensecrets.org has documented the legal graft and lawful bribery that underpins our "democracy".

When one considers the depth and breadth of the electoral sleaze factor, it is amazing that this nation hasn't completely collapsed into incompetence, bankruptcy and anarchy.

Or has it?

By: Loner on 6/19/09 at 6:28

The Republicans impeached Clinton for opening his fly, now they want to impeach Obama for swatting a fly. At least they are consistent.

By: Loner on 6/19/09 at 6:43

One does ot need to listen to Limbaugh; Idgaf and Chief listen to the demagogue, ingest his BS and then regurgitate it here. The key fear-inducing words are "rationing", "socialized medicine", "nationalized health care" and "mandatory". Like a gaggle of geese, the Obama haters squawk, quack and hiss menacingly, but they are toothless, domesticated fowl putting on a show of false bravado. One barking dog will sending them running in all directions.

The prez needs to start barking and snarling, or else his goose will be cooked on this vital issue. Obama needs to make it perfectly clear, if health care reform is thwarted, it is Congress and the campaign finance mechanism at fault, not his Administration.

By: Rocket99 on 6/19/09 at 6:49

id, one of the problems with TN Care is all the people from other states who moved here just to get on it. If there had been a residency requirement similar to state colleges and in state tuition, a lot of those leeches would have stayed where they were. Then we have the people who live across the border, claim a TN address and use our system. And finally, there are the doctors and health care facilities who abused the system by prescribing unneeded medications and unneeded visits and medical procedures.

I remember the news story channel 5 did when TN Care was reducing coverage on medications. They interviewed a woman who had a big bag full of medications she was taking. She declared that if she had to drop any 1 of those she'd be dead within a few months. They interviewed her again 6 months later. Her doctor was forced to reevaluate all of her medications. What she was taking was greatly reduced. Her health IMPROVED. Imagine that. It actually improved because the doctor had to do what he should have done all along.

Private health care would never put up with what TN Care has to put up with. If the "government healthcare" system is forced to work like BCBS, Aetna, etc., then it can succeed. Also, just like the current rules, companies should be required to pay for part of the coverage.

By: Dragon on 6/19/09 at 6:50

Loner, you know the whackos at PETA are all Democrats.

Yeah, you can keep your insurance through your employer provided that 1) you can afford the increased cost of premiums and taxes and 2) your employer continues to offer it.

By: Rocket99 on 6/19/09 at 6:52

Rush and company are idiots and unfortunately, a lot of times, it's the idiots who make the most noise and cause the biggest problems.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/19/09 at 6:53

Loner, the difference in the two fly is that one has to do with sex. The other has to do with health. By killing the fly, Obama has illustrated that he wants health care reform for the country.

Sex is offensive for the right wing, which never has sex. lol

By: Rocket99 on 6/19/09 at 6:54

Dragon, that's like saying the whackos at the Southern Baptist Convention are Republicans.

Wait! They are! Hmmm.

By: CAH on 6/19/09 at 6:54

Actually, Loner, it is PETA who is castigating Obama for killing that fly. Sad that you would believe Nemo's little verbal cartoon.

Oh, and again, the call for Clinton's impeachment was for lying under oath, not the BJ. And to refresh your memory, he lost his law license for 5 years for that little stunt.

"The moving finger writes, and having writ, moves on. Only in passing do you realize that you've been goosed."

By: Captain Nemo on 6/19/09 at 6:56

Dragon, I think that PETA is Green.

By: TH on 6/19/09 at 6:56

You would like everyone to have your health plan? Without having to pay for it or work for it? What is there about health care that makes you say this? Food is more important than health care. Don't you feel the same about food? And shelter is more important than health care. Don't you feel the same waty about shelter?
I think it is noble that you want others to have what you have. The simple answer is -- give what you have to others. However, I think that may not be what you have in mind. I think you may not be considering REAL charity. Instead, I think you may be thinking you can "give" somebody a gift at no expense to you by having the government TAKE (steal -- appropriate) from others and then buy something.
It is time you realized, if this is the way you are thinking, that this idea is NOT noble. People are entitled to feel secure in their public proerty. It is perfectly all right for you to appeal to their better nature, and ASK them to give to charity, you may even spend some of your own time and knock on doors. However, if you are not even willing to invest your own time this way, your appeal does not reflect any willingness on your part to be charitable EXCEPT with Other People's Money. From now on, when you have ideas like this, if that IS your attitude, please start off your letter, to be honest, with: Here Is Something I Would Like To Do With Other People's Money.

The USA is the "wealthiest Nation on earth"? Did I miss something, or are we bankrupt and $5., give or take a trillion, in debt?
d-7, something we agree on.
My suggestion for the "potential" parents is that you should think long and hard (no pun intended) before you jump into parenthood. It's expensive to feed, clothe and have housing and healthcare for one person; so now add a few more to the equation and wow! It sure is expensive to have children. Nashville wants to have classes and licenses for dog owners, but we fail to see the correlation between parenting and logic. So, no I think the woman who had the problem should buy food first and find a free clinic. They abound all over the place. And some of them are very good. Plus, I do not personally know those who were "refused" health care. I know some people who own a home and a business and still got $50,000 written off by a hospital and doctor for a heart attack. So it's possible to get health care. Just not the way O-man wants it for us: Mandatory and supplied by a corrupt government. I missed the O-man fly killing story. What's up with that? Flys are nasty, disease carrying insects and deserve to die. At least at my house they do.

"id, one of the problems with TN Care is all the people from other states who moved here just to get on it. If there had been a residency requirement similar to state colleges and in state tuition, a lot of those leeches would have stayed where they were. "

Don't forget that 15 million of the uninsured are illegal aliens and probably the same amount are their American-born children.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/19/09 at 7:06

CAH
There you go again. Limbaugh was was complaining about PETA. My cartoon was to illustrates what Limbaugh is capable of doing to enrage his worshipers.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/19/09 at 7:12

Yes sydney, whealtiest. Compared to most counties we are. However we are not has rich has we were before Bush.

By: Rocket99 on 6/19/09 at 7:15

Dragon, I forgot about that group. Not sure they were a part of the initial problem but definately are a factor now.

I knew a guy from Great Britan who's parents retired from there to Nashville. After a very short time, they were on our Medicare system, getting SSI benefits and looking to enroll in TN Care. Something just seems a little wrong with that picture.

By: Loner on 6/19/09 at 7:23

Yes, I realize that it's the green socialists and their communist allies who are so upset over the innocent fly's violent death at the hands of the CINC. I was just trying to be a wise guy with the fly joke. Clinton told a white lie, but the question, "Did you have sex with that woman?" was irrelevant and completely out of order; the Congress was never intended to act as a kangaroo court or to host a witch hunt. The GOP acted more shamefully than Clinton did, IMO.

Actually, I was dissappointed to see Obama kill that fly, needlessly taking life, even that of an insect, is not cool. He should have joked about it, he might have quipped, "Is this a housefly or a GOP robotic surveillance vehicle?"

TH reminded us of another fear-inducing term often used by Limbaugh and his imitators, "Other People's Money". British PM Maggie Thatcher popularized the phrase, Limbaugh keeps it in vogue.

NEMO & ID: re idgaf please show proof of people dying in Canada

I worked for several years for a man from Montreal whose father, when diagnosed with cancer at the age of 61, was sent home to die. No treatment was offered other than enough drugs to kill the pain as the cancer did its thing.

BTW, you been to a VA hospital lately? A mere preview of what's to come if Obama, Pelosi, Reid, et al. have their way. Once a government health care plan is offered for all, that will be the dealthknell of ALL private insurance. Employers will off load that expense to the government and give you a TAXABLE pay raise to cover some of your additional cost.

Oh boy, where do I sign up!

By: Blanketnazi2 on 6/19/09 at 7:26

BTW, you been to a VA hospital lately?

Actually, my neighbor who is a vet and works for the post office had surgery at the VA hospital in Murfreesboro. She raves about how wonderful it was and how competent the staff is.

By: dargent7 on 6/19/09 at 7:26

Sid: I may believe under that nasty exterior (which may be just an act) you're a dear sweet lady? Naw.
Comming down hard on the fly? Ask yourself, if you see a pile of horse sh**t, do you lick your chops and want to land face first on it? God bless those flies!

By: Captain Nemo on 6/19/09 at 7:29

What kind of cancer Critterzen did your freinds father die of? My wife died of cancer her in this country. We had insurance but there was no treatment for the type she had.

She was 54 at the time of her death.

By: Loner on 6/19/09 at 7:45

Citizen, the local VA hospital is not new, but the service is excellent. As a vet who takes other vets to this hospital, I can attest that the sytem is working quite well here in upstate New York.

D7, are you implying that it was a horse sh*t fly trying to alight on President Obama's face? That sounds like something Rush might say.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/19/09 at 7:51

Verbal Cartoon

Rush Limbaugh beats his chest in front of the microphone and shouts to the ceiling. "I have have killed a fly on television before Obama and it had WMD's.

By: Dragon on 6/19/09 at 7:55

Didn't Obama say something like "i got the sucker"?

Are we sure he wasn't talking about the IGs he's firing?

By: dargent7 on 6/19/09 at 7:57

Loner: 1st, please help the good Admiral with his spell check. Who is "Critterzen"? A new student? And Obama would of looked sillier if he pretended the fly wasn't buzzing around his head.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/19/09 at 7:59

I think he meant for you Dragon.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/19/09 at 8:01

My nick name for Citzen dargent.

"Actually, my neighbor who is a vet and works for the post office had surgery at the VA hospital in Murfreesboro. She raves about how wonderful it was and how competent the staff is."

Yep. I have a neighbor who is a vet. A while back, I took him to the ER at the VA.
It was 9PM on the Sunday night before a Monday holiday. He was seen, treated, got his meds and gone within an hour.
Try that at Vandy.

By: Kosh III on 6/19/09 at 8:05

We have rationing here now.

Some folks, like Rush or Sen Lame-ar have a huge cadillac ration, millions have a ration of nothing.

By: slacker on 6/19/09 at 8:12

My hope is, Obama improves the quality of food in those hospital cafeterias.

By: Loner on 6/19/09 at 8:15

One wonders how that fly got past the Secret Service agents. They couldn't protect Bush from a pair of thrown shoes, now this.

I watch the Military Channel, on cable television and it seems that insect-sized robotic surveillance vehicles are not science fiction. Research scientists say that these tiniest of unmanned flying machines, like their bigger UAV cousins, could be fitted with miniaturized, yet lethal, weapons. These devices could be the ultimate in assassination tools. According to the Military Channel, the US and Israel are jointly sharing the R&D funds. Of course, US taxpayers foot the bill, this state-of-the-art stuff ain't cheap.

By: Funditto on 6/19/09 at 8:19

ARGHHHH Mrs. McLaughlin - it will not be government run healthcare. It will be universal health insurance. Same insurance you have, everyone will have it. It will not change your life one bit but will make a huge difference for those who do not have the same sort of benefits you enjoy.

By: slacker on 6/19/09 at 8:19

The fly's last words were: ''but I voted for you.''

By: Captain Nemo on 6/19/09 at 8:21

An army of sand fleas, then there will be no need for The Terminator.

By: Loner on 6/19/09 at 8:24

D7, Captain Nemo doesn't need any help from me, he is, after all a starship Commander. You didn't answer my query, are you saying that the fly was a horse sh*t fly trying to land on a meal?

Is the root word in "ration" and "rationing" rat or ratio?

By: Captain Nemo on 6/19/09 at 8:24

The fly lied, slacker. It was an illgegal alien from Ork.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/19/09 at 8:28

That was told to you in confidences, Loner.

By: girliegirl on 6/19/09 at 8:29

@Captain... sadly, there is no effective treatment for most cancers, IMO. Most of my friends and their parents/children died from the treatment and not the cancer itself.

My heart goes out to you for your loss.

By: Loner on 6/19/09 at 8:30

Sure thing, Cap'n Nemo.....are you sure that the Orkians aren't monitoring this site?
