Council counsel

I voted for you [The City Paper’s publisher Chris Ferrell] many times for Metro Council. I think you've done a great job at The City Paper. Why don't you run a piece comparing the Metro Council that you were in to Council today?

Do we have too many councilpersons? Is it possible to cut that number back? How many councilpersons do cities with similar populations have? Is the Council effective or are they just a rubber stamp for the mayor?

An in depth article on this matter would be most elucidating. I hope to read it soon.

Good morning.

Good letter and good questions.

By: house_of_pain on 7/22/09 at 6:09

Does the Council get free parking? Is Batman on the Council? How long will we stay on this topic today? Anyone...anyone?

By: Captain Nemo on 7/22/09 at 6:13

Translate please.

Toby told the insurance agent, "That on a far day the far house caught on far."

By: Captain Nemo on 7/22/09 at 6:17

Council does get free parking. Your guess is could as mine if Batman is on the counil. Althought I think Crafton thinks himself as somekind of super hero. As for your third question.....who knows. Maybe it already has.

By: Kosh III on 7/22/09 at 6:19

That's easy Captain. I'm fluent in hillbilly, hick and country.

By: Kosh III on 7/22/09 at 6:25

I think the large council is good. Councillors have small enough districts to actually know constituents and be more responsive. For the past two elections, my Councillor has gone campaigning door-to-door. You don't get that with a small council that has big districts. I once lived in a city substantially larger than Nashville and it only had 10 councillors. Their districts were so big that they were only responsive to certain constituents: those with big donations and influence.

As to rubber-stamping the Mayor, that would depend on whether or not the Mayor was strong, or if the Council had strong leadership. The previous Council under Gentry was a rubber-stamp as Gentry leaned which ever way the wind blew.

Where's "Loner"? What does "elucidating" mean? Is that similar to Euclid's Genometry?

By: slacker on 7/22/09 at 6:38

That crowd hasn't had a deep thinker, since Ludye Wallace left.

By: Captain Nemo on 7/22/09 at 6:47

Kosh, I agree with you about the size of the council. The size has good and bad points.

By: Captain Nemo on 7/22/09 at 6:57

I think Loner is on his wildside retreat.

By: Captain Nemo on 7/22/09 at 7:00

Wallace knew his way around the council. He will be back in two years or sooner. He is now eligible to run again.

By: dargent7 on 7/22/09 at 7:16

d'Pain: The Vegas line is 7:5 against staying on topic, before 8:30am. Beating the crap, aka, "spanking" your children, is THE topic over at that Communist paper.

By: slacker on 7/22/09 at 7:22

nemo, does size count?

By: Rocket99 on 7/22/09 at 7:23

Maybe Wallace will get back on the Council and try and get the UFO landing pad again. He's such a joke.

nemo, does size count?

It does to chief.

I guess everyone is getting frustrated with this Administration by now!

Senator: Democrats 'baffled' by president's health care stance

By: Captain Nemo on 7/22/09 at 7:36

The UFO pad was not a Wallace original. I forget who was the ginius behind that idea. It did not pass council.

By: dargent7 on 7/22/09 at 7:39

OK., it's after 8:30am, can we get to some true journalism here? Anyone know the web site this ESPN reporter Erin Andrews in caught naked on? YouTube doesn't have it yet. Anyone seen the face of this Andrea McNulty suing Ben Rothelsberger for rape (afer a solid year?)? Looks like a gopher or beaver. Yuk!

By: chiefpayne568 on 7/22/09 at 7:39

Man, now this is SAD. Again I am SO glad I don't live in California.

By: chiefpayne568 on 7/22/09 at 7:57

Of course, it's not about him.

What is funny is, he's ticking off the very people that put him into office as well as his own opposition. IMO, he's doing a number on his presidency without anyones help.

Andrea McNulty is having a delayed reaction, d7.

Looks like a lot of people don't like this Universal Health care idea.

I believe they have gun control there too...wonder how long THAT will last if they actually do this?

House: ONE solid year later? And when does a woman come to a hotel room to fix the TV? Look at her face. It's reminescent of the Kobe Bryant case. I believe he did "force" himself, but that broad had sex the day before AND the next day. Had 3 guy's semen in her in 3 days. Sounds like she liked it.

By: house_of_pain on 7/22/09 at 8:15

d7, the semen from the other 2 guys probably came from Ben's mouth.

By: chiefpayne568 on 7/22/09 at 8:16

And for those who think the military have such wonderful medical care and so should not complain about socialized medicine, check out this article.

BTW, it also brings up an interesting question...if someone dies or is injured because they are refused health care because they do not meet the standards set by the Federal government in a Universal Health Care law, would they have the right to sue the government? Lord knows, even if they COULD sue the government, it would be very difficult to win.

Military Medical Mistake Disfigures Local Airman

"Read's wife says the doctor admitted it was human error. "All my husband ever wanted to do was to deploy, all my husband ever wanted to do was serve his country. He used to tell me when we had flyovers and they played the national anthem, the chills he would get from the pride that he felt from being an American airman, and this is something an Air Force doctor has taken from him."

But because of an old federal law called the Feres Doctrine, Read, his wife, and his family members can't sue the military over what happened to him."

By: chiefpayne568 on 7/22/09 at 8:24

Huh. Well, it looks like more people are watching Fox News than ever.

Fox News ratings rise in Obama era; CNN slides

"Compared with last year, Fox News (averaging 2.1 million viewers, 509,000 adults 25-54 quarter-to-date) is up 35% over last year in primetime viewers and 48% in the demo. CNN (805,000 viewers, 210,000 in demo) was -16% in viewers and -29% in the demo. MSNBC (787,000 viewers, 259,000 in demo) climbed 15% in viewers and about on par, -3%, in the demo. And CNN Headline News (553,000, 201,000) showed very strong growth, up 39% and 37%, respectively, and is on track for its best second quarter yet."

We have about 30 too many members, IMO. It's like hearding cats.

By: dargent7 on 7/22/09 at 8:38

Like FOX News do we, Chief? What a shocker. Like Ann Coulter, Dick Morris, Glenn Beck, Huckabee, Sean Hannity, Mitt Romney, Ari Fleisher, Michelle Chang, and Karl Rove? Bill O'Reilly is good for a slugg-fest, but those political commentators suck. Try Rachael Maddow for a lucid, rational, change of pace.

By: chiefpayne568 on 7/22/09 at 8:39

Can anyone confirm or deny this story??? Curious!

Obama's top secret service agent fired

By: idgaf on 7/22/09 at 8:43

There is a difference between health "care" and health "insurance" and should not be interchangable.

As far as health "care" goes we have the best in the world.

For those of you old enough to remember the government (dems) started all the problems when they started Medicaid and did away with city/county hospitals as they functioned in those days.

Medicaid/Medicare is going bankrupt so how can they be trusted with control over even more people? Get a dose of reality and open your eyes and see what is right in front of you.

The VA is such a great system too?

The government is the problem not the solution.

By: Funditto on 7/22/09 at 9:38

We have about 30 too many members, IMO. It's like hearding cats.

Yeah, I'll agree with that. Ideally one would think that if the councilperson has a smaller district they would be more responsive, however that doesn't seem to be the case. The council members tend to get stuck on inane issues and waste a LOT of time.

By: chiefpayne568 on 7/22/09 at 8:47

Don't blame the messenger. The stats for Fox News speak for themselves.

By: chiefpayne568 on 7/22/09 at 8:51

BTW FYI - According to Ace of Spades, the Live Leak story about the secret service agent being fired is not verified or correct at all.

NOT a true story, apparently.

Voters are starting to laugh out loud at promises that this health care plan will save money...and they are questioning their reps WHY Congress is opting out of it, if it's so good!

I seriously doubt this is going to pass...at all, much less before the next recess.

By: chiefpayne568 on 7/22/09 at 8:58

Are you referring to the IQ of the people who are going to watch Fox News...or those who voted for Obama for President? They are, by simple statistics, essentially the same people you know.

By: chiefpayne568 on 7/22/09 at 9:00

Exactly. You can be educated or become a pervert. The choice is yours.
