Letters to the Editor

No fan of double standards

This is not a letter about being a fan of the Tennesee Titans (I'm not), but a letter of fairness. This is also not a letter of being a fan of Vince Young, because that is not the case as well.

I write this over unfairness to an individual [Young] who definitely did not deserve this; I refer to how Kerry Collins was allowed to quarterback a team to an 0-6 start — losing one game by an absurd score of 59-0.

There is no way that Young would have been allowed to quarterback a team through an 0-6 start. I feel he would have been allowed three, maybe four, losses to open the season, and then would have been yanked as the starter.

I'm almost certain there is a double standard in Tennessee with the Titans. As I've stated, I am not a Titans fan (my team is the New York Giants) nor a Vince Young fan, but I am a fan of fairness — being fair to a player and also to your team. Titans management let their team suffer and stuck it to one player, Young. That was totally unfair to him and to the Titans.

Their season would be so different, much more successful [if they gave Young a chance earlier]. In all fairness, I would feel the same way if the roles [Collins' and Young's] were reversed, but they are not.

John W. Miller, 11236

This LTE is a joke. Seems Mr. Miller is playing the race card, but why not just come out and say it? And what's all this preface:"I'm not a Titan's fan, nor VY fan"?

For the record, VY was injured last season and the job went to KC. He drove to a 10-0 record before the team fell apart, losing the last 4 and the play-off. All resulting by how they looked Sunday against the Colts: dropped perfect passes, fumbles, penalties.

Jeff Fisher thought he could repeat the "magic" this season, 10 months later, rationally, and intelligently going with KC as the starter. KC earned the position. VY did not. (Never mind VY's antics on and off the field...remember those, Mr. Miller?)
I'm sure, as we all were, the Titans going 0-6 for the same reasons as we saw on Sunday.

Now, Bud Adams, between "senior moments" of flipping off opposing teams and "peeing in his pants" called the coaching decisions and plays from the owners box. VY stepped up and ran with it for 5 straight wins, making Adams look like a genius.
While we were loosing to the best team in the NFL, Fisher didn't pull VY even after he was wirthing in pain clutching his knee.

Football isn't always fair. But, you have to win to succeed and stay in the game.
We'll see how VY does the final 4 games. If Fisher replaces him with KC it's a "business" decision based on the need to win.

Like Jeff Fisher, it's anyone's guess of the ultimate outcome.

And for the record, I was a Lion's fan, but because they stink, I'm now a Titan's fan. Period.

Ho hum.

By: house_of_pain on 12/8/09 at 6:49

Unless VY gets hurt, he will finish the season as the starter.
The 0-6 start wasn't exactly Collins' fault, though.

d7, I don't think it matters to her...as long as there's a tight end involved.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/8/09 at 7:29

Good morning.

Now while we are on the subject, lets change the subject.

But I do think house's tight end referance is funny.

By: Dragon on 12/8/09 at 7:33

I think Dargent is correct that the letter is a veiled reference to racial discrimination. The overuse of the word "fair" (four times in 5 paragraphs) and the over qualification that the author is not a fan of either quarterback or even the team, would feel the same if the roles were reversed, and portraying Young as the victim are classic race baiting techniques. The author should have stated it was unfair because one quarterback is black and the other is white.

By: slacker on 12/8/09 at 7:34

dargent you summed that up well.

They don't call him "Mr. Brevity" for nothing, slacker.

A guy took his girlfriend to her first football game. Afterwards he ask how did she like the game.

I liked it,but I could not understand why they were killing each other for 25 cents.

What do you mean? he asked

Well everyone kept yelling to get the quarter back.

Can't seem to get a break news.

Now for another round of jokes.

House: My ex-wife did refer to me as "Mr. Brevity", but she wasn't refering to my typing skills. My personal physician when asked me to "cough" said, "Man, that's sure "brief"....before I coughed.

Me too Nemo. I was watching MNF, when Howard Cossell announced it.

By: slacker on 12/8/09 at 8:16

It wasn't me that called you Beverly dargent.

By: Funditto on 12/8/09 at 8:16

Me too, gd? Where were you when it happened? I was on a bus, headed north from Miami. Had just been on a cruise, so it was a tough road back to reality.

By: dargent7 on 12/8/09 at 8:17

OK, Funditto, you don't go for the slants and screens, how about 4th & short? Would you go for it?

By: house_of_pain on 12/8/09 at 8:18

I was only 12 when it happened. I remember my dad being pretty sad about it.

By: Funditto on 12/8/09 at 8:18

Dunno. Slants maybe? 4th and shorts sounds painful.

By: Funditto on 12/8/09 at 8:19

Did you hear a 22 year young man was arrested for throwing tomatoes at Sarah Palin?

By: gdiafante on 12/8/09 at 8:25

I was about 12 too. I listened to three albums as a child. An old Eddie Cochran album my dad got in France just after Eddie died, Led Zeppelin II and The Beatles White Album.

I was devastated. I learned to play the guitar listening to Cochran, I learned to write because of Lennon.

All the good ones go too early.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/8/09 at 8:26

I just read it Funditto. He hit two cops instead. Thanks for the news.

By: dargent7 on 12/8/09 at 8:27

No "e" in tomato, is there, Mrs. Quayle?

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/8/09 at 8:29

RIP, John. Doesn't seem that long ago.

Yoko & Wing need to team up for a duet.

Isn't that a sign of the apocalypse?

By: dargent7 on 12/8/09 at 8:29

Not that it matters, but wasn't Lennon killed in 1980? That would make it 29 years.
If this is 2009, I'm quite sure.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/8/09 at 8:30

I was an old 35 year old at the time. I had just bought his last album a few weeks earlier.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/8/09 at 8:31

Your right dargent.

Damn I am even older.

By: gdiafante on 12/8/09 at 8:32

Yep, my bad. 29 years. I was thinking of a friend of mine that died in 1981, on the same day.

By: Loner on 12/8/09 at 8:35

Good morning, Nashville!

John Miller's LTE seems to be a bit disingenuous, if you're not a fan, why go to the trouble to write an LTE on the subject?

Miller seems to imply that because he is black, VY would not have been allowed to go six games w/o a win before being benched; conversely, because he is white, KC was given the benefit of the doubt and allowed to lead the team to six humiliating defeats before being relieved of the starter role.Miller offers no evidence to back up his assumptions.

This is a rather shallow LTE full of fanciful "should haves", could haves" and "might haves". This missive is nothing more than conjecture and unsupported opinion. If the writer intended to start a race war with this LTE, he has failed.... for that, we can be grateful.

By: dargent7 on 12/8/09 at 8:39

I was 20 or so. I always fancied McCartney over Lennon. But, "Imagine" by Lennon is as good as Bhrams. It's better than McCartney's "Hey Jude". Could be the era, but for simplicity and beauty it's as haunting as "Moonlight" sonata.

By: dargent7 on 12/8/09 at 8:41

Loner: How do you know Miller is "black"? That's a stretch if you don't know him.

By: slacker on 12/8/09 at 8:41

Loner you summed that up well.

By: slacker on 12/8/09 at 8:43

Saved the board from one of my repetitious posts.

By: Loner on 12/8/09 at 8:46

Mark David Chapman wanted notoriety and he got it. He should have been put down years ago, NY's electric chair hasn't been energized in decades. Lennon's killer is a celebrity inmate.

By: dargent7 on 12/8/09 at 8:47

Where in the LTE does Miller say, "because I am black"....?

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/8/09 at 8:49

Paul, did you skip a day and they didn't have any other LTE to publish?

By: slacker on 12/8/09 at 8:51

dargent, Loner was referring to Young.
I'm here to help.

By: dargent7 on 12/8/09 at 8:51

I don't think Chapman gets any marriage proposals like the Menendez brothers or a Scott Peterson.
He may not be gang raped like a child molester, but I really have no idea how the gen. pop. treats someone who killed a rock star.
From what I read, even criminal murderers have their own "rules, morality. and conduct" in prison.

By: Loner on 12/8/09 at 8:52

I did not say that Miler is black, Darge.

I see how you drew that conclusion, it was in my ambiguous sentence structure. I wote, "Miller seems to imply that because he is black, VY would not have been allowed to go six games w/o a win before being benched...". The "he" in that sentence refers to Vince Young, not John Miller. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks Slacker, apparently you understood my grammar, syntax and sentence structure. It's early... I need my meds.

By: dargent7 on 12/8/09 at 8:53

Slacker: You are correct, sir! I think I'm off a little because the server crashed yesterday and I couldn't read all my fan/ hate mail.
Sorry, Loner.

By: dargent7 on 12/8/09 at 8:56

Loner, It's all good. But, is your line, "ambiguous sentence structure" another one of your veiled gay slurs?

By: Loner on 12/8/09 at 8:57

A comma after the word "that" might have helped. I'll try to live up to the high standards I demand of everyone else....just bustin' the caljones.

By: Loner on 12/8/09 at 9:00

Yes, Darge, the sentence was very "bi". A little GBLT in one's prose is very chic these days.
