Athletes fall so far

Great perspective on the accountability (or lack thereof) of professional athletes! [City Paper, Dec. 21] We are all accountable but it's good to hear someone vocalize the fact that these men and women are no different.

We, the general public, should not idolize them so much that we lose perspective for the high standards of marriage.

I personally feel that these men and women lack a personal relationship with God or they wouldn't fall so far. [That's] not to say that every Christian does things perfectly, it just gives you the perspective, discipline and the accountability it takes to honor your marital relationship.

Thanks again for writing what a lot of other people think.

Michael Kerrigan, Nashville

I hate to admit this, (really I do) but I have to agree with sidney on the money-spending trips and parties of the president. In the current economic situation, when so many people are without even the base essentials of life, it is hard to see him spending money so frivolously. I understand he's the prez and can do what he wants to. I understand he is expected to "entertain" in a certain fashion. But, if he wants to bring change to the nation, he should start with himself.

Loner - if you're going to push the Old Testament law you need to remember that Jesus stated that he was the fulfillment of the law to everyone who believed.

sidneyjames - Obama's parties are nothing compared to what RR used to throw.

As for the Michael Kerrigan letter two things:
First - Mikey seems to be a very judgemental person.
Second - As I've said before the proper name for marriage is holy matrimony and it can't be holy without God at the center. So I am astonished when any non-christian marriage prospers.

blanketgirl - Don't drink too much!

Nemo, i realize that. my best and closest friend of many years is a devout christian and i have several jewish friends. it's the hypocritical, unempathetic so-called christians that i have a real problem with.

HE pays for his hotel room, Sid. He's not poor. Geez, is that all you have on him? LOL! Next you know, Michelle will be criticized for wearing SHORTS in Hawaii.

By: dargent7 on 12/29/09 at 10:29

What's all this disaraging talk of Jay Cutler? Guy killed it last night. Threw "laser accurate bullets" to his WR's as the commentators explained. He's 6'3" and 233#, and knocked LB's off their feet attempting to tackle him.
Isn't he from Vandy? Were's the loyality for a homegrown?
I watch Brady, Henning, and Stafford, all from Michigan, and hope they win.
VY stinks, has the brains of an ant, and will never improve to more than 8-8, Bud Adam's Alzheimer's notwithstanding.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/29/09 at 10:29

i don't have a problem with the devout church goers however i do have a problem with organized religion.

DustyU, no worries there! for me brewing is like cooking, it's an artform. i've very happy and get a good sense of accomplishment when i brew a good batch!

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/29/09 at 10:30

dargent, he did have a good night last night. too bad those good nights are so rare for him.

By: MamaG on 12/29/09 at 10:30

Blanket said: "... it's the hypocritical, unempathetic so-called christians that i have a real problem with."

I so totally agree with that. Just this morning I was talking with my boss about that very thing and how it is a big turn-off for me going to any church.

Koran talks about killing infidels true but it also calls Jews and Christians its brothers not infidels. That's because they all share the bloodline of Abraham.

What we should do is to stop terrorist from getting into this country is stop all Brown Skin from getting into Amurica!

We should round up all of them that are here now and send them back to where they come from.

That means Americam Indians and Mexicans too! - Kyel Pyle

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/29/09 at 10:33

Dusty, you truly believe that a secular individual could not possibly have a good marriage?

By: gdiafante on 12/29/09 at 10:33

He also threw interception number 26. Should have had numbers 27 and 28 also. He makes poor decisions most of the time. Not sure what happened to him, maybe just an off year.

Dargent, no need to insult ants. My guess is that VY's toilet has instructions taped on it.

Gd, Christ was a Jew's Jew, if and when he returns to our planet, I expect that he will return as an Orthodox Jew, not a Christian. Did he think that he was the Son of God incarnate? When asked about all that, by Pilate, he is reported to have said, "Thou sayest it". In modern English: "You said it, not me." Or am I wrong on that?

Half-man and half-God demigods are pagan concepts, Jews consider such notions top be gentile idolatry. The Jews came up with the Messiah myth, if they say Jesus was not the guy, who are we goyim to tell the Chosen People that they screwed up? That's anti-Semitism squared.

By: house_of_pain on 12/29/09 at 10:37

Cutler got drunk after a loss here at Vandy, and destroyed one of the campus emergency phones. That's how I'll always remember him.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/29/09 at 10:37

"It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid." (Luke 16:17)

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place." (Matthew 5:17)

so, according to the New Testament the Old Testament is still valid.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/29/09 at 10:38

Just so you know, Christians started to believe the New Testament trumps the Old Testament as Pauline Christianity (as in Paul of Tarsus) rose to dominance. Paul was the one that argued (and he had plenty of people to argue against, like Peter) that Christians are not held by Mosaic law. In fact, before Paul, Christianity was really just a sect of Judaism that expected members to get circumcised and keep kosher.

Congrats Mama! What a great Christmas present.

seriously, house? that's hilarious!

no problem, Nemo. 8~)

Just don't let him join the Tappa Keg fraternity, MamaG.

By: house_of_pain on 12/29/09 at 10:41

Sure did, Blanket. VUPD hauled him in, but the local media never went after him.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/29/09 at 10:42

that's funny!

Tappa Keg - lol!

By: gdiafante on 12/29/09 at 10:43

I don't think he's coming back. That's why I'm in the doghouse with Christians.

I told that to my inlaws on Xmas eve. That's why I'm in the doghouse with my wife.

By: gdiafante on 12/29/09 at 10:44

The media was too shocked that a VU quarterback was somewhat talented. Why blow a good thing?

Ummm, kinda hard to do since they are the original inhabitants here.

Kosh, you're confusing them with facts again.....

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/29/09 at 10:47

g, did you also tell them the easter bunny isn't real?

By: DustyU on 12/29/09 at 10:47

Loner - I've never read anything in the bible about half god half man or godman. I believe what it states plainly that Jesus was the only begotten son of God.

Blanketnazi - Matt 5:17 talks about Jesus fulfilling the law so we don't have to. Otherwise why did he have to die on passover eve like the Jewish sacrificial lamb?

By: gdiafante on 12/29/09 at 10:50

Dusty's right. Jesus was the new covenant, which replaced much of the old testament, but did not render it invalid. That's why Jews had problems with it.

And that they did NOT like it when it was "bring your dad to school" day.

By: house_of_pain on 12/29/09 at 10:53

Jesus died while rescuing Santa from Iraqi terrorists. I saw it on South Park.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/29/09 at 10:54

The problem with the Bible today is that they should have left it in Enlish and not transferd it into gobble-de gout. Kyle Pyle.

Jesus: My father created heaven and Earth.

Dusty, with all due respect, the official Jewish side of the Jesus story is seldom aired in public, for obvious reasons. I once inquired about this by calling a Rabbi on the phone, out of the phone book...when I finally reached a Rabbi who would take the call (most have secretaries who deflect calls), he advised me to get Rabbi Kaplan's booklet on this subject. I did. It was extremely revealing.

It's not unfair to summarize the Jewish take on Christ as a story of a blashphemous heretic, a seditious troublemaker who got what he deserved. He was, in short, a nutjob who led a sect of gullible followers. Of course, in public, most Jews will say that Jesus was a great teacher etc., to avoid persecution, but behind closed doors, many Jews ridicule and mock the Christian faith and its gentile followers.

Don't take my word for it, Dusty. Read the comments on the Jewish Israeli newspaper boards, the Israelis are very happy to take our money, but they consider Christian Americans to be little more than useful idiots for Zionism.

By: dargent7 on 12/29/09 at 10:58

Nazix2.5: Watching last night I just saw a QB (Cutler) playing with "intent" and throwing w/ incredible accuracy. He beat Farve, which ain't easy.
VY scrambles around, but looks "lost", and scampers like a girl (no offense).
He throws "bombs" which fall through WR's hands.
He's pulled up lame 3x in the last 3 games....
KC threw the ball with more "intent", but Bud Adams owns the team and tells Fisher what to do.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/29/09 at 11:00

well, if Jesus is the new covenant, he had no problem with homosexuality. only the old testament did. the problem i have is that modern day churches often pick and choose what they want from the old testament. the stuff they don't like they say, "oh that doesn't apply because Jesus fulfilled the old covenant." but then they'll pick stuff they do like and say we need to abide by the 10 Commandments, etc.....

By: dargent7 on 12/29/09 at 11:03

House: A "house phone"? So what? Tebow cried like a baby on national TV for 15 minutes after a season ending loss.
I tend to cry only after sex and make sure there's no one else in the room.
From beginning to end.

By: DustyU on 12/29/09 at 11:04

Blanketnazi - Yes most modern churches are a long way from walking the walk. The only people Jesus condemned were the hypocrites. Most so called Christians ignore the seven times Jesus told them they aren't allowed to judge others.
