Viewpoints: Bredesen on the state budget

Monday, January 4, 2010 at 12:14am

Tough times

"It is going to be a very difficult budget year. These next few months will be the most difficult of my time as governor.

We have the combination of the cuts that were made last year, then were sort of backfilled with (federal) stimulus money. And then on top of that you’ve got the cuts because the revenues have continued to go down. We are in 17 or 18 months now of declining revenues. It’s been something that hasn’t happened in this state since the Great Depression.

It’s going to be very tough and I’m committed to doing what I said I was going to do in the beginning, which is do everything in my power to trim our expenses so we don’t get ourselves out on a limb. We’re tracking the revenues.

That’s what every family right now has got to do. I think the state has to do the same thing."

So, where are the Letters to the Editor, this fine morning?....................... If your carpetbagger Gov, truly wanted to save taxpayer's money, he would pull the plug on some of hisdubiuos pet projects, like his infamous marijuana eradication program. While other states are moving to legalize and tax Cannabis, Tennessee is still in the "Reefer Madness" frame of mind.

By: house_of_pain on 1/4/10 at 6:34

I wonder if the LTEs have been cut? We haven't had a fresh one since last Wednesday.
Mornin', Loner.

By: Loner on 1/4/10 at 6:45

Mornin' House. I smelled a rat last week, when the owners removed paragraph breaks. By limiting language, style and format, the owners may be seeking to limit the thinking process itself....Orwelle-on-the-Cumberland.,,,,,the thinking process in TN is already impaired, as a result of generations of mediocre public education efforts.......... House, maybe we are jumping to conclusions, we shall see.................. I sent in an LTE criticizing Dick Cheney's recent comments; that's still newsworthy; it's probably too "liberal" for the new NCP, I may have to post the letter on my blog....I hope I'm wrong, but my gut tells me that they are trying to break up that old gang of mine.....I sent the Editor an Email about all this, but no reply yet.

By: house_of_pain on 1/4/10 at 6:52

Removing us would greatly reduce the number of hits this site receives,
and might affect advertising.

By: Loner on 1/4/10 at 7:01

Dargent7 repeatedly called for pulling the plug on the LTE section, maybe he convinced the new owners to do just that. That would be ironic, as Paul would most likely miss the LTE gang more than anyone else.....that platform was practically his own column. I've been posting on Rosner's Domain, on the Jerusalem Post online site.....Rosner's moderators let more through than the other JP Talkback boards do....the Rosner's Domain regulars are a cerebral and zealous gang of posters.....come and join us, House.....the discourse is slow, censors go over every post in Israel....many are culled for no apparent reason.....but, one does have an opportunity to debate real Zionist extremists on the Israeli sites.....I like that.....of course, I am despised by most Israeli posters and their global advocates.

By: Loner on 1/4/10 at 7:07

Give 'em a call and tell them how you feel...I wrote them an Email to express my views. If I'm banned again, I won't be surprised, but it will be dissappointing to see the return of Brewerism.

By: Loner on 1/4/10 at 7:10

Phill Bredesen, are you reading these comments on your letter? Will you be returning to Shortsville when you leave office? They still hold a raft race on the chilly, white waters of the Canandaigua Outlet every spring...will we see you there? We'll smoke a doobie, for old time's sake.

By: house_of_pain on 1/4/10 at 7:21

I may check that out,'s not as if I have anything better to do.

By: govskeptic on 1/4/10 at 7:31

Maybe the Gov. will make the cuts where they make sense
instead of the silly cutting of a percentage of all departments.
A few departments could be cut in half with no damage to
the needed services of the state.

By: Kosh III on 1/4/10 at 7:31

Expect more layoffs during Phil's last year. At least he has the consolation of a nice shiny new underground party facility where he can sip champagne and ignore the hardships that the average citizen is enduring.
Expect more layoffs as well.

By: sidneyames on 1/4/10 at 8:01

Lame Duck Governor. What's with all the name caling? I thought everyone liked Phil. Maybe he should have resigned a year early. Hmmmm. Sounds familiar.

By: sidneyames on 1/4/10 at 8:06

Spell check: "name calling". Gonna be a slow, boring day at CP.

By: Kosh III on 1/4/10 at 8:49

Happy New Years to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let it snowletitsnowletitsnow......

By: Kosh III on 1/4/10 at 8:52

Not everyone likes Phil. He was a lousy mayor and a crappy governor. He has no concern for anything but money and to save a few bucks he has been more than happy to kick the "sickest and most needy" (his words) to the curb. The only time he spent was to splurge on legacy projects that make him look good.

Today's post on Yahoo: " Even though it was called a vacation, the trip to Obama's childhood home was hardly the holiday most Americans seek. Between golf outings, he phoned his homeland security secretary and counterterrorism adviser for regular updates. Rather than restaurant recommendations, the president was handed thrice-daily updates from the White House Situation Room. And an attack that killed seven U.S. intelligence officers put him on the phone with the CIA director before heading to the island's North Shore for a party with high school friends."

OMG. The President didn't get to have a "vacation" that was like, say, your or my vacation. Well, isn't that aweful? He's president; he wanted to be president now the news from the White House is whinning that he didn't get to do a "restaurant recommendation". He had to have "thrice daily" updates from the White House. Awww. That is so aweful. The world did not stop for his spoiled rotten butt to go on vacation. The bombers were still bombing; the haters of America and Americans were still hating. Did he actually think the world would stop for HIS royal hineyness to go on vacation? The white house sure does look stupid to me. OMG he had to talk to the CIA before going to a party with high school friends. Shut up! You don't say. I'm just appalled at that. Next time he plans a vacation, you terrorists need to take some time off. The stock market needs to shut down. America needs to let that man rest (and how many more vacations does he need, anyway?).

By: sidneyames on 1/4/10 at 9:04

He's not "most Americans". Supposedly he the President of a country. That would put golf on the #100 list of priorities for me.

By: sidneyames on 1/4/10 at 9:04

Seven Americans died and he had to leave and go to a party with high school chums. One of those times you wonder, where's the drunk driver?

By: Captain Nemo on 1/4/10 at 9:41

Some how sid goes from Tennessee Politicis to bashing US President Obama.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/4/10 at 9:47

I disagree Kosh. I thought he was a better Governor that Mayor, but still the CEO.

By: MamaG on 1/4/10 at 10:11

Good morning and happy new year to you all!

By: Captain Nemo on 1/4/10 at 10:25

Good morning MamaG and happy new to you.

By: Kosh III on 1/4/10 at 10:37

I guess it was ok during 9/11 for Bush to just sit in front of the kids and look stupid or during Katrina for him to stay on his ranch doing a "heck of a job."

By: sidneyames on 1/4/10 at 10:41

Well, if I was caught in a hurricane like Katrina, I'd be doing something for myself. After all, NO is BELOW sea level; what do you expect.

OK, I"ll stick to the subject. I just get riled up over the excessive spending on "vacations" when Americans are expected to do "staycations". He's a beer pocketbook man with champagne tastes and we, taxpayers, are paying through the nose. I don't think Bredesen was any worse than Karl Dean as mayor. I'm selling a 98 Isuzu Hombre truck; anyone need a cheap truck? Oops! Wrong forum.

By: MamaG on 1/4/10 at 10:53

I bet you think Katrina was the Lord's way of "cleaning up" New Orleans, don't you, sidney?

By: gdiafante on 1/4/10 at 10:54

All Presidents vacation...and they probably deserve it. Take a look at a pic of them when they are first elected and then when the leave office. Sid, you're just cherry-picking again. As far as Bredesen, he was smart enough to understand that putting at least 14K people downtown 41 times a year is a good thing.

By: gdiafante on 1/4/10 at 10:55

You're right Sid, NO is below sea-level. They should evacuate now, huh?

By: Captain Nemo on 1/4/10 at 11:45

sid is our new chief. She tells the truth up to a point then she stops and leaves out words or invents them.

By: gdiafante on 1/4/10 at 1:01

God, I hope not Nemo, that would be similar to Palin as President. I'd have to become a Canadian.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/4/10 at 1:30

Lol gdia. At less Palin is eye candy.

By: Loner on 1/4/10 at 1:34

So, where is D7?

By: chiefpayne568 on 1/4/10 at 1:41

Thank are quite correct about the governor's projects. Not quite sure I agree with you about MJ as I don't use it nor do I condone it within my family. However, I cannot see why people shouldn't be able to buy it anymore than they can tobacco.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/4/10 at 2:02

Where is d7? Where is Blanket and others?

By: house_of_pain on 1/4/10 at 2:04

I'm around. I've got the crud, though. I may be contagious.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/4/10 at 2:09

You must have gotten the E-crud from me, house. I guess no one is immune fro it. Sorry !!

By: house_of_pain on 1/4/10 at 2:11

My fault for not wearing a mask while posting.

By: gdiafante on 1/4/10 at 2:16

Well CJ made it, House. That's about the quietest 2000 yards you'll ever see. They didn't even stop the game to acknowledge it. The Titans are the Rodney Dangerfield of the NFL. But they'll be in LA soon

By: Captain Nemo on 1/4/10 at 2:18

You live a learn, house.
I should have ware gloves while posating. lol

I just hope that this budget cuts come to an end or there want be any goverment. Then maybe that would be a good thing for Tennessee.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/4/10 at 2:21

You think that the Tennessee Titons(sic) will become the LA Titons?(sic)

By: chiefpayne568 on 1/4/10 at 2:26

Speaking of being sick, just saw this.

Mayo Clinic in Arizona to Stop Treating Some Medicare Patients

I expect more to come.

By: chiefpayne568 on 1/4/10 at 2:29

Reminder of horsepucky from Congress from a previous "stimulus" bill. Did it succeed for you?

‘Jobs, Jobs, Jobs’: Is the Stimulus Plan the ‘Epic Fail’ of 2009?

By: Captain Nemo on 1/4/10 at 2:29

If you got what I got, house, it will hang around for awhile. I am still not over it completely.

By: house_of_pain on 1/4/10 at 2:41

Curse you for that, gd. I've had it since Thursday, Nemo.

By: gdiafante on 1/4/10 at 3:02

I'm still in shock that Dallas beat Philly so badly. I still don't expect them to win on Saturday night though...we'll see. Damn, I guess Phillips isn't going to be fired...happy new year...bah!

By: gdiafante on 1/4/10 at 3:03

What's that stuff you can take to limit the severity of a cold? I use that, it seems to work.

By: Dragon on 1/4/10 at 3:36

Dems intend to bypass GOP on health compromise

Why am I not surprised? Just ignore the 47% of Americans who did not vote for Obama.

By: Dragon on 1/4/10 at 3:50

From today's press gaggle aboard AF-1:

Q You mentioned Iran. What's the next step in terms of sanctions or considering the next step now that it's the new year?

MR. BURTON: Well, the door is of course still open for Iran to do the right thing and live up to its international obligations. And we'll be going through the appropriate process to try to get them to the table and do exactly what they're supposed to do. So I think that this week is -- the national security team meets and the Iran team meets -- that we'll be talking about just that, what the next steps are.

Don't you just love the whooshing sound as deadlines go flying by?

By: sidneyames on 1/4/10 at 6:50

By: MamaG on 1/4/10 at 10:53
I bet you think Katrina was the Lord's way of "cleaning up" New Orleans, don't you, sidney

Don't know exactly what you mean by that. I think that the building of a city below sea level comes with certain risks, among which could be flooding, especially if the levy fails. Duh! That's why when I buy a house, it ain't in the flood plain. But I'm not sure why God had to clean up NO. If you mean Mardi Gras, then that's your thought, not mine. I have only been to NO one time and liked it as much as I like San Diego. I'd rather be in TN or Montana with Virginia and Idaho running a close 3rd and 4th. Then maybe New Mexico or Nevada. BUT not LA or CA. Yuckie to both of 'em. Not for any particular reason. And I don't think God cleans out places. I think nature takes it's course and if your home is in the path, look out!

By: Loner on 1/4/10 at 7:21

The lines of text directly below the posting window seem different than before....what is a "filtered word"? And the paragraph break thing is bogus. Something's up. Here's the text as it appears on my PC:

Filtered words will be replaced with the filtered version of the word.
Allowed HTML tags:
Lines and paragraphs break automatically

By: Loner on 1/4/10 at 7:23

Hmmmmm, It seems that paragraph breaks are back. The HTML commands listed did not include the off switches, hence the bold italic.

By: Loner on 1/4/10 at 7:26

OK....I better try some HTML tricks, to get the board back to normal. ....Testing 1,2,3.
