Viewpoints: Creating a statewide jobs clearinghouse

Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 11:45pm

Republican gubernatorial candidate and Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam announced Thursday plans to develop an online jobs clearinghouse that will pull together existing market data in a user-friendly way so that every jobseeker, employer, community official, higher education institution, and economic development organization has access to timely and accurate information on the current and future economic landscape of Tennessee.

“Tennessee is still suffering from nearly 11 percent unemployment,” Haslam said. “Lots of people are looking for work, but the question is, ‘How can we aid in that process? How can we help people make informed decisions about what careers to pursue, what businesses to start, what training to offer?’”

This one-stop shop will serve both a short-term and long-term purpose. It will help the thousands of Tennesseans who have recently lost their jobs quickly rejoin the workforce, but it will also help communities, entrepreneurs, and postsecondary institutions make informed decisions about future economic development.

Nope, and that's not even a good try, just shows your ignorance again.

govskeptic - The State Department of Labor collects their paychecks of course. As for actually providing a service; surely you jest? The most important factor to remember is this: they're all beholding to the politician in power, until they quit/die/retire. The system has not changed (since Andrew Jackson started the "spoils" system) and will not be allowed to change, because of the money base in control. Until Haslam changes who controls the politicians, institutes accountability of State employees and faces the reality that business, in general, doesn't like Tennessee (unless they are bought to come here) don't expect to see any differences.

free thinker,

It's all about education my friend.... businesses prefer workers who can actually navigate a four-way stop.

I admit to ignorance, gd... but I'm struggling to find any other explanation for your profound disdain for the American capital economy. Teacher was a reasonable guess because you are somewhat articulate and evidently have the gross cost of government offset, in your mind, by some larger personal benefit that lets you envision the economy as a boundless source of revenue, in need of no nurture itself; but with which smarter people like you are obligated to do public good.

You seem to have no real questions about how our why our little economy has a GDP 3 times as large as its nearest competitor and over 4-5 times as large as most of the European countries held out as examples of what America should be.

If not a teacher who has never held a job in the real world, then what? A journalist?

Maybe Ben is a politician, he sure writes a lot without saying much.

Seems to me the problem is a lack of jobs and not a lack of connection between the people and those hiring.

sid, they'll just been making jokes about the crazy woman at the meeting when they go to happy hour. hope you don't mind being the running joke.

Of course. I would be honored to be the "running joke" and "crazy woman" does not begin to describe me.

Someone else at the meeting was upset cause a hoochie-coochie club is being displaced due to convention center. I spoke up and asked if we could have it moved to Antioch. Who knows, I might want to work there. I need a few more jobs before I retire (or die - whichever comes first).

Crazy woman: Hmmmmm. D7 calls me Sid Vicious and ya'll call me sidiot! I love that name "sidiot".

By: brrrrk on 4/9/10 at 10:30
Oh goody goody, just what we need..... another potentially useless job search site to clog things up.
You are correct brrrk. And who gets hired by e-mailing or down loading a resume along with 500 to 5000 other resumes? How the heck do you stand out with those odds?

So answer the question: How did you stand out? And what kind of job is/was it?

And do you love your job.

Or that could be a "slack of communication".

I'm going out to mow the grass; plant some more veggies and flowers and just enjoy life.

The Census called. They hired me. OH wow! Now I've got 2 part time jobs. Look out D7, I'm knocking on your door. Oh, no, knock, knock, knocking on heaven's doors!

I'm so excited. NO more CP for a few weeks (or months). Well, occasionally.

By: gdiafante on 4/9/10 at 1:20

Yes House, I have my playoff tickets. I really, really REALLY hope we don't play San Jose...not again...
