Viewpoints: The perils of Pelosi

Monday, March 15, 2010 at 11:06pm

During World War II, Winston Churchill warned of the danger of fighting a land war against Japan in Asia. "It is like going into the water to fight the shark," he said. That's about what it is like fighting the Speaker in the House of Representatives.

Pelosi controls every aspect of a House member's career. She can turn on and off the spigot of money to his campaign, move the member's office to the broom closet in the basement, cut back on his staff and travel allowances, move him to the DC and Post Office Committees and bring mayhem to his official life.

But beyond her power lies the penalty of exile and ostracism. The House is very much a fraternity/sorority of members and group-think is very much in vogue. A Senator who had served in the House once told me the difference. "The House is like a college campus. You have your friends and you go on raids against the opposition, always in groups, in packs. In the Senate, it’s like dealing with foreign heads of state. You talk to the senators, they nod and then they go back and meet with their staffs before they'll give you an answer."

Ostracism in such an environment is a potent price to pay for independence. As she desperately pushes for Obama's health care bill; that is what we are up against.

But the Speaker can be beaten. And once she is, she has functionally lost control of her chamber. The key is to use our only weapon: public opinion. That is why we need your donations to battle Pelosi for every vote. Each day, the League of American Voters is monitoring the whip counts from the GOP and from the Hill Magazine and they are adjusting the tone, content, focus, targets and intensity of their ads to take account of the most subtle changes in the House.

This is truly a fight of the insider vs. the outside. Please give us the tools we need to wage this fight in this crucial last week.

Dick Morris and Eileen McGann

I would be ashamed to quote Dick Morris. How low we have become.

By: dooley on 3/16/10 at 2:39

Just two more opportunist's begging for your money to be misused and funneled into their own accounts. Beware of anything that has their name on it . They're not as interested in defeating Pelosi as they are getting your money.

By: dooley on 3/16/10 at 2:45

Has the CP resorted to disguising political rhetoric and fund raising campaigns as letters written by readers?

By: eastnashville37207 on 3/16/10 at 3:15

Let me see now. Dick Morris works for Fox News who is owned by Ruppert Murdock and we should trust any of them or donate any money???
Murdock, Rockefeller and Brzezinski have the media brain dead as to the truth. Both parties that includes Democrats and Republicans are run by the Trilateral Commission and do what ever it tells them to do. One party is just as bad as the other.
The Bilderberg Group, the Trilaterals, the Council on Foreign Relations, have planned this all along. The end of the US as we know it and the people are so stuck on stupid they just do not see it. The government like stuck on stupid so they can get away with the dirty tricks which includes eugenics..

Lies from every politican, lies on a daily basis from all the media is why but it's time the people wake up and take their country back before it's to late. You have very little time left.

Wait till after the Nov elections all hell is going to break loose.

By: dooley on 3/16/10 at 4:27

Take your tranqulizers this morning EN. You sound like a raving maniac.

By: dooley on 3/16/10 at 4:29

" Wake up Chicken Little the sky is falling".

By: 2476 on 3/16/10 at 5:54

Dooley < I rarely if ever post here anymore , just because of liberal nitwits such as yourself. You can't attack the message , so you attack the messanger. That is what an oxymoron does. Step back and take a notice, that most of those that use to post have left this liberal site and went somewhere else to talk with those that have something sane to say. Not some iggoramance , such as your self . Pee-loser is just exactly what Dick Morris just wrote about in the above article. She is a loser and her popularity is less than 20%, people like yourself. Wake up and start reading from some one that has something sane to say.

By: dargent7 on 3/16/10 at 6:05

2476: And just where, pray tell, have you and yours gone to post? The Tennessean? There's a contingent of 85% hard core, mindless robots, calling themselves God fearing, Christian Republicans over there. It's a vulgar, tasteless group.
They follow the likes of Sarah Palin over a cliff, higher than the cliff G W Bush & Co. drove the country over.
The only solace I have is knowing Obama as President, and having a Black family in the White House, has to be driving you types completely insane!

By: Loner on 3/16/10 at 6:14

Good morning, Nashville!

No LTE this morning, but we do have an appeal for cash from a husband/wife team of professional zealots.

Remember, Dick Morris is the one-time Clinton advisor who turned on his former benefactors and made a career out of sliming the Clintons.

He's the guy who let a DC hooker listen-in on Presidential telephone calls etc.

Here are a couple of snippets from Wikipedia:

"Morris and Eileen McGann are behind, a site intended to register non-scientific political public opinion on various issues."

"Morris had been labeled as one of the biggest tax delinquents in his home state of Connecticut, owing an estimated $280,000 in unpaid taxes and a total of $452,367 in unpaid taxes and fees.[29][30] In 2003 the IRS filed a $1.5 million tax lien against him."

Considering the source of this sales pitch, I'd say it's a safe bet that this is another sleazy scam, Morris and his wife are scaring the crap out of seniors and trying to stampede them into rejecting healthcare reform.

Dick Morris has been reduced in stature, he now survives through fear mongering and the exploitation of senior citizens,

IMO, the NCP should have charged Morris a fee; this is an ad, not an opinion piece.

By: 2476 on 3/16/10 at 6:14

No argo it is driving you insane , because you know that you are one of the ultra libs that put him in the White House. Change , yes! for the worse , that is the reason that his popularity has dropped to 43% in 15 months. That is the quickest dip in popularity in the history of any president. By the way black has nothing to do with his presidency it is his dumbass way of handling this country.

By: Kosh III on 3/16/10 at 6:26

2476 said in part:
"You can't attack the message , so you attack the messanger. That is what an oxymoron does.... Not some iggoramance , such as your self . Pee-loser...."

First you criticize someone for attacking the messenger, then you turn around and engage in childish name calling "Pee-loser". Plus, ever hear of a spell checker? It's ignoramus. And an oxymoron is not a moron on oxygen.

What we need is the health care plan the AMA proposes: everyone is in an enhanced Medicare program. But we will take the flawed plan about to be passed. It's still better than the do-nothing plan the GOP had when it was in control.

By: Loner on 3/16/10 at 6:38

2476 thinks that Obama is handling this country in a
"dumbass way". I disagree.

The special interests are calling the shots and Obama seems powerless to alter the US federal government has been thoroughly corrupted.

Case in point: Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, but he has escalated the fighting in Afghanistan and Pakistan while continuing to occupy Iraq, The Defense Lobby calls those shots.

Obama would like to end the Arab-Israeli conflict, but the Israel Lobby will have none of it. Obama's popularity in Israel was estimated at 4%, according to the NYT. American Christians are accusing Obama of abandoning Israel.

Obama would like to see an energy-independent USA, but the Energy Lobby has other plans; they want to tap the energy reserves of Central Asia and build a pipeline through hostile teritory (Jihadist lands), terminating in Israel.

There it is, in a nutshell, those 3 lobbies combine their strengths to form the War Lobby. Nobody in Washington DC dares to stand up to that omnipotent consortium.

Don't blame President Obama, the system has been in place for many years and with the recent SCOTUS decision, to allow unlimited corporate funding of political agendas, this situation will only get worse.

By: Dragon on 3/16/10 at 6:39

Pelosi's latest gambit is to declare the Senate bill passed WITHOUT TAKING A VOTE. I would hope that Obama would refuse to sign it (small hope) or at least have it challenged as unconstitutional.

Pelosi has risen from despot to dictator.

By: jvh2b on 3/16/10 at 6:41

D7 that has to be the best description of the posters at the Tennessean/Buffy forum (is that place even still around?) that I have seen!!! Thanks for the smile this morning!

By: Loner on 3/16/10 at 6:42

Missing words S/H/B - "The special interests are calling the shots and Obama seems powerless to alter the dynamics. The US federal government has been thoroughly corrupted." Loner

By: 2476 on 3/16/10 at 6:42

Kosh III>> I have seen on here where you never used spell check and I did not correct you on it , simply because this is just a message board and just that. It is not a news journal being written for a large paper.
I have my doubts that it will pass, because it will be repealed next year when all of Pee-Loser little puppets are defeated in this falls election.
It will be a large sucking sound in Washington, when all of the liberals are whooshing out of the Senate and House of Representatives.

By: Loner on 3/16/10 at 6:49

Dragon, we agree on your point. The law is the law, if the Democrats circumvent it, they will regret it in November. Even us "libs" have respect for fair play and the rules of the game. IMO, heavenly ends do not justify devilish means.

For the record, I do not care for Pelosi's demeanor or methods. She appears to be rather shallow, almost superficial. She is a good cheerleader, but a lousy coach, IMO.

By: house_of_pain on 3/16/10 at 6:50

Loner's posts have been brought to you by a grant from the Java Junction...

By: house_of_pain on 3/16/10 at 6:52

IMO, Pelosi desperately wants to be the HMFIC.

By: Funditto on 3/16/10 at 6:54

2476 and his ilk are full of witty criticisms and cutsie nicknames like Pee-loser and Barry and O'Bama, but while they are giggling to themselves they fail to notice that not one person on their "side" has ever offered a concrete solution themselves.

They believe we were all hunky-dory-lovey-dovey until that mean ol' Barack Obama took office and ruined everything!

By: dargent7 on 3/16/10 at 6:54

2476: TCP choose last year to trim the LTE's from 3-5 to one.
Now, it's zero.
So, the discussions here are about whatever the board makes up as "Today's Topic".
The Tennessean runs 80: 20 conservative, mindless, LTE's.
The carbon copy posts are from the same bunch, over and over.
"ed 179", "morriscat2", "bj159", all hate Obama, don't like a thing the guy stands for, did, or will do. All and their like minded "agree" with each other. Different day, same posts. Different LTE, same posts.
It's an exclusive club over there, devoid of independent, rational thought.
It's lock-step...where have I heard of that concept?

By: Loner on 3/16/10 at 7:01

Thank you, House, I forgot to mention that...yes, I am a professional zealot - I work for Coffee, Candy and/or Cannabis. Potential clients are invited to my updated blog entry:

I'll bite, what is HMFIC? Homely Mother Female In Charge?

By: Loner on 3/16/10 at 7:07

Darge, "Baldmusician" is not me. I did not post there, I was waiting for you to provide the URL...when I saw your post, last nite, I searched and found Dooley's LTE.

The format there seems slow on the page turn function, pages load slowly. Visually, the NCP is more pleasing to the eye, IMO.

I did not post there, are comments moderated and thus delayed?

By: 2476 on 3/16/10 at 7:07

I don't just post on the Tennessean .
But for a few days sit back and read the same old rhetoric that is being said on this site. " Bush"s fault , Lamar 's fault , Cheney's fault, McConnell"s fault, Dick Morris fault, Limbaugh's fault, and etc. It is never the fault of this loser of a President's fault , who is a one termer.

By: Kosh III on 3/16/10 at 7:08

I don't normally use spell-checking features because I almost always know the correct spelling of a word, how to use it, and I mostly know the proper use of punctuation.
I try to avoid being sententious and have never had an aneurysm. I do occasionally rise and shine in the morning with a hendiadys or two.

By: Loner on 3/16/10 at 7:20

Snappy comeback by Kosh.....I give it a 9.0.

Still, 2476 has a valid point, this is a newspaper talkback forum, not English Composition 400.

We are all amateurs...we write for the love of it.....words are like building materials, but not everyone is a skilled carpenter.....sometimes the product isn't plumb or level.....but we do-it-yourselfers continue to cut boards and pound nails. Screw the building inspector! We don't need no stinking permits....

By: dargent7 on 3/16/10 at 8:00

Loner: Why everyone is suprised The Tennessean has a "Letters" section astounds me. Or how to access them.
It isn't "moderated", loads all the LTE's, usually 6-8, in 2-4 sec.
Each individual LTE when highlighted, shows the # of "Comments"...
There's no "Fans", "Friends", like The Huffington Post or USA Today.

By: idgaf on 3/16/10 at 8:07

If you guys were paying attention to her rantings you would realize she is losing it or has lost it.

She is an egotistical maniac rather then a leader and part of the un-holy three.

By: BenDover on 3/16/10 at 8:23

Her national rankings don't matter. Her district is San Francisco for heaven's sake. But she's so far to the left of center on these issues it's amazing to me the Demo's keep her in power. She's dragging the country in a hard-left correction that the country doesn't want... but she continues full tilt. I have to wonder how the media is able to cover for these guys as well as it does. Obama's Senate voting record was left of Bernie Sanders yet he walks around unhindered like he's a reincarnation of Clinton or something. I mean, geeezzzz.... these guys are hard left radicals so far outside the standard deviation of traditional American values and culture it's pitiful; but for some reason they've got this force field protecting them from reasonable scrutiny. If they are successful with their radical transformation of America it will be a sad day for our country, indeed.

By: BenDover on 3/16/10 at 8:25

"Screw the building inspector! We don't need no stinking permits...."

Amen, brother.

By: Kosh III on 3/16/10 at 8:27

Bernie Sanders, one of the few decent Senators left.

By: BenDover on 3/16/10 at 8:31

He's a *^%&*% Socialist. I guess it is laudable that he admits it though.

By: Loner on 3/16/10 at 8:34

Darge, I noticed that there was a click-on at the very bottom of the homepage for Letters, the link was almost hidden down there with all the other fine-print clutter.

I like this board and I like this posting community...warts and all.

By: BenDover on 3/16/10 at 8:43

The Tennesean site is just too bulky and cumbersome. With the exception of returning you to the first page of comments when you post another comment rather than putting you on the last page of comments; this site is better, I think.

By: Loner on 3/16/10 at 8:45

Ben, I hear your wail, but don't feel your pain, brother. Obama is a figurehead.... relax, the lobbyists are in full control. All the demagoguery about Socialism, Marxism, Communism and even Bolshevikism is empty but inflammatory rhetoric, designed to increase viewer and listener ratings. Do not be stampeded, break away from the herd.

The GOP is nose-to-tail on anything that obstructs Obama's agenda or smears his circus elephants parading around in a 3-ring circus, under the big top, as the local hayseeds whistle and applaud. It's an un-natural act, Ben...time-honored but not very honorable or humane.

By: dooley on 3/16/10 at 8:49

Most of these right wing idiots hate anyne that they can' control.

By: BenDover on 3/16/10 at 8:49

Oh I don't disagree that it's a show, loner. I've made that point myself before. The problem is that these showmen are readying to do some serious damage to the economy; and it is upon that, the economy, that we rely to support all these excesses we tolerate and sometimes even enjoy as spectators.

D7 said (again) "The only solace I have is knowing Obama as President, and having a Black family in the White House, has to be driving you types completely insane!"

"you types" is a common phrase used for stereo typing people, D7. What exactly do you mean "you types"? And can we move upward and forward from playing the race card? Today we are talking about "Pelosi controls every aspect of a House member's career".

I agree that Nancy Pelosi is not healthy to our country. Sara Palin may be a "ding bat" (according to some), but Pelosi is the wicked witch of the west who spends money like a house afire!

Good morning CP! Life is so good here in Antioch, aka LA! Your favorite poster, Sidiot, has returned fully refreshed after a vacation. I told my friends about my new name and they laughed their butts off (with me, not at me). I love that name! Sidiot is the word of the day this WEEK!

By: BenDover on 3/16/10 at 8:52

You have not seen control until they take over health-care dooley. That will give them their perceived moral and social justification to monitor and control all that we ingest and all that we excrete.

By: sidneyames on 3/16/10 at 8:53

P.S. Can't remember the nameless, faceless code name who first called me Sidiot, but thank you. It's brought much laughter to me. And as you know, laughter heals.

D7, how about a free, all expense paid vacation to La Jolly?

By: dargent7 on 3/16/10 at 9:04

Sid, I'm sure whomever coined your stage name, "Sidiot" will take responsibility.
I always called you "SidVicious", but then I stopped calling.
"you types" was directed toward '2476" and othe Nazi sympathizers who post at The Tennessean.
TCP is 90% strickly a chat room.

BenDover said

""Screw the building inspector! We don't need no stinking permits...."

Haiti anyone?

Has anyone given any thought as to why it is that we haven't heard much about Chili and the earthquake they had.... in spite of the fact that Chili's quake was stronger than the one that struck Haiti? Could it be that the death rate was much lower? And if so why? Could it have had something to do with the fact that Chili actually had an effective government that imposed building standards that would prevent a catastrophe the likes of Haiti, a thoroughly free market libertarian society?

By: Loner on 3/16/10 at 9:06

Ringleaders in uniforms, brass bands blaring, high-flying girls in tights, animal acts, freaks, clowns, peanuts. popcorm, cracker jacks, cotton candy and sugar waffles, Ben....and pork, can't forget the pork. We all love the circus.

D7, Sid's asking you out for a getaway weekend...she used to look like Miss December....1966. Could be a GILF. Is there a bit of Quagmire in D7?

By: house_of_pain on 3/16/10 at 9:08

By: brrrrk on 3/16/10 at 9:09

To quote an earthquake researcher, "Earthquakes don't kill, buildings do".

By: DustyU on 3/16/10 at 9:10

loner good analogy!
captain is the Cheshire cat
dargent is quagmire?

brrrk I agree Haiti has no building codes but more critically all its wealth has been stolen over the years since independence and no effective government

By: DustyU on 3/16/10 at 9:12

oh yeah and house has his own tv show named after him

brian here
good morning everyone
grandpa said to tell everybody hi

By: Loner on 3/16/10 at 9:13

True that, Brrrk. I was using the term in a metaphorical sense - the analogy was that of words to building materials. In that analogy, a building inspector would be analogous to a pedantic grammatician or a spelling-typo nit-picker, IMO.

By: BenDover on 3/16/10 at 9:14

It's called a metaphor, brrrrrk; and not even my metaphor... geezzz
