Even many people who listen to nothing but heavy metal aren’t familiar with the music of the Canadian ensemble Anvil. But an acclaimed documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil was among the big hits at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and it’s coming to Nashville and the Belcourt Theatre on May 22.

Tickets went on sale Friday at 10 a.m. for a special May 23 screening that will be followed by a live performance from the band.

Sacha Gervasi’s production follows the struggle of Toronto musicians and friends Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow and Robb Reiner to keep Anvil going after some early success. Their 1982 album Metal on Metal has been cited by a host of groups as extremely influential, among them Metallica and Slayer.

But while Anvil would eventually tour with many of the era’s most popular bands, it was never able to turn that exposure into sustained success.

Anvil! offers a first-hand look at the problems and personality challenges that often derail groups that seemed destined for long-term stardom.

Tickets for the May 23 show are $12 for adults, $10 for Belcourt Theater members. For more details, call 846-3150, click here.
