When German film director Wim Wenders teamed with archivist guitarist Ry Cooder a couple of years ago to make the superb Buena Vista Social Club movie, no one anticipated their results would fuel an Afro-Cuban and Afro-Latin music resurgence.
Cooder overcame State Department bureaucracy and domestic political intrigue to travel to Cuba and record a session with legendary players and singers who had been superstars during the pre-Castro era, when Havana was a tourist haven.
