Jill Scott is singing smooth R&B in the background. A television sits high on the wall showing the latest Dow industrial movements on CNN. All around, young and middle-aged African Americans are quietly going about the business of improving their bodies. And they give thanks Marathon Fitness opened in the heart of North Nashville.

Located at 1303 Clinton St. in the old Marathon Motors building, this new facility glistens with new Paramount strength equipment, Precor Cardio-Monitored machines, Tectrix trainers and bikes, as well as free weights throughout its 3,500 square feet. Its marble-like floor, red brick walls and intimate setting are reminiscent of private gyms found in crowded Downtown office buildings in the Northeast, but it sits comfortably in the residential neighborhood close to Fisk University.
