The London tabloid Onions & Tripe Bugle reported Smithee, a confidant of fugitive financier Marc Rich, was an inept figure in attempting to secure a Clinton presidential pardon for Rich.

Smithee, a renowned Hollywood producer of many critically assailed but financially-successful movies, made efforts to influence acquaintances in Washington on Rich's behalf.

As a result, wealthy flamboyant socialite Denise Rich, ex-wife of Rich, approached Smithee to produce a get-richer-quick TV infomercial on how to "hang out" with the Clintons. His fee is said to have included insider information on Sunday New York Times crossword puzzles.
