Belmont has been invited to compete in the nation’s longest running regular-season men’s basketball tournament.
The Bruins will play in the Great Alaska Shootout from Nov. 21-23. The eight-team event, which began in 1978, features host University of Alaska-Anchorage, UC Riverside, Northeastern, Charlotte, Loyola Marymount, Oral Roberts and Texas State.
Belmont, which went 27-8 last year and reached the NCAA Tournament, opens the tournament on Nov. 21 against Alaska-Anchorage, which finished 2011-12 ranked 16 h in the NCAA Division II poll. The Bruins will play either UC Riverside or Northeastern on Nov. 23, the day after Thanksgiving.
“The Great Alaska Shootout has a rich history, and is one of the most recognizable events in college basketball,” Belmont coach Rick Byrd said. “The chance to compete against quality programs during the non-conference season, while experiencing all that Alaska has to offer is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
