Belmont’s coaches initially were skeptical about Dylan Craig’s defense.

The freshman outfielder immediately established himself as an everyday player, though, which allowed him to produce consistently on offense.

His efforts have not gone overlooked, as evidenced by the number of postseason honors bestowed upon the Signal Mountain product.

Monday he added second-team All Ping!Baseball Freshmen to the list. Vanderbilt designated hitter Aaron Westlake also was named to the second team.

Lipscomb pitcher Rex Brothers was a third-team All Ping!Baseball selection.

“Dylan Craig was someone we felt could come in and take over for us at one of our outfield positions, eventually,” Belmont coach Dave Jarvis said. “When he got here, we found out he was a much better defensive player than we had first thought, which improved our lineup.

“Not only is he a talented hitter, but he did it on an everyday basis.”

Craig was the Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year after he hit .397 and had a 26-game hitting streak along the way. He also earned Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball.

Westlake, a redshirt-freshman, was the SEC’s leading hitter with a .384 average. He also was a second-team Freshman All-American selection by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American.

Brothers, who was a first-round draft choice by the Colorado Rockies last week, was a first-team all-conference pitcher.
