Twenty-seven games into the season, Jordan Coleman no longer is the new kid on the block at Belmont.
Thanks to her play, she also is well-recognized throughout the Ohio Valley Conference.
For a league-record 10th time this season, Coleman was named the OVC’s newcomer of the week on Tuesday. The Vanderbilt transfer breaks the record of nine weekly newcomer honors set by Tennessee-Martin’s Alecia Weatherly in 2009-10.
It marked the sixth straight week a Belmont player earned the award. Middle Tennessee State transfer Jordyn Luffman was honored two weeks ago.
Coleman recorded her eighth double-double Saturday when she scored 12 points and grabbed 13 points, in addition to four blocks, in a loss to Eastern Illinois.
In her only season with the Bruins after graduating from Vanderbilt last spring, the senior is averaging 10.1 points and 10.1 rebounds – one of two OVC players to average a double-double. The 5-foot-11 forward from Orlando leads the league in defensive rebounding (8.4), ranks third in total rebounding and is fourth in field-goal percentage (47.6).
Coleman, one of four transfers for Belmont (15-12, 9-5), is a lock for the All-OVC newcomer team. Conference awards will be announced next week before the league tournament begins at Municipal Auditorium.
