Top-ranked and unbeaten power Ensworth has landed two finalists for Mr. Football, the TSSAA announced Tuesday.
Orleans Darka, a 2,000-yard rusher, who has led the Tigers to a 9-0 season, has been named as a back finalist in DII-AA. He follows last year’s teammate Tavarres Jefferson (who won the award last year) as a finalist. Also, tight end/defensive end Sam Cooper has been named as a DII-AA lineman finalist.
Nashville stars Andrew Fletcher of MBA and Nick Pollard of Father Ryan have been named as two of the three finalists for the Mr. Football Kicker award. Both have been instrumental in their respective teams’ success and march to the DII playoffs, and both are in action Friday in the second round.
Fletcher has booted five field goals, including a game-winner late against McCallie, while Pollard has nine field goals and 30-of-30 extra points. Both are seniors.
Franklin Road Academy back Doug Page has been named as a finalist in DII-A. He has led the Panthers (7-4) to their first playoff berth since ’04 by rushing for more than 1,500 yards. Last Friday, Page helped rally FRA from a 20-7 halftime deficit by rushing for two TDs and throwing for another in a 28-20 playoff win over Fayette Academy.
Defensive lineman Derek Vaughn of defending DII-A state champ Davidson Academy was named as a lineman finalist and is one of the Bears’ leading tacklers. Big-time recruit James Stone of Maplewood, a stellar offensive tackle, was named as a lineman finalist in Class AA for the Panthers (7-4) who have reached the second round of the playoffs.
Winners will be named on Nov. 30 at the Tennessee Titans-sponsored Mr. Football awards luncheon at Embassy Suites Hotel in Murfreesboro.
