Former Tennessee Volunteer and Tennessee Titan Jesse Mahelona was killed Friday night in an automobile accident about a mile from his home in his native Hawaii.
He was 26.
Mahelona played for two seasons with the Volunteers and was a fifth-round draft choice of the Titans in 2006. He also spent time with the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons after being released by the Titans in 2007.
“Jesse was really a neat and fun guy to be around. He always had a smile on his face and was one of those guys that liked to live life,” Mahelona’s agent Chad Speck said.
According to Speck, Mahelona was actually contemplating reviving his football career.
“We had had some recent inquiries from Canadian football teams and perhaps some down the road interest from the UFL,” Speck said. “When the Canadian league practice rosters expand next month, I believe he was going to have an opportunity to get back into it. He was really working out and watching what he was eating and was very excited about it.”
Mahelona is survived by his wife, Brandi and one child. His wife is expecting the couple’s second child soon.
Speck indicated that a trust fund could be set up for the children.
