Cumberland University athletic director Pat Lawson has been named the new athletic director at Father Ryan, replacing Hosey Holzapfel, who retired last spring.
Lawson is a ’93 Ryan graduate and received his BS in Education in ’97 and Masters in ’98, both from Cumberland. He will be responsible for the administration of the overall athletic program at the 84-year-old Catholic school.
Since 2002, under Lawson’s direction, Cumberland has made 22 NAIA national championship appearances, including a 2004 national championship in baseball, a national champion in swimming, cycling, men and women’s tennis, along with men’s basketball and women’s basketball national tourney appearances. The women finished national runner-up in 2007.
“Father Ryan has been synonymous with successful athletic programs in every sport and at every level,’’ Lawson said. “I am excited about the opportunity to work with the school in the ongoing development of all our students.’’
Lawson will oversee the building of a new athletic complex at the school, including a football stadium, all of which is scheduled to be completed by 2009.
He begins his duties July 1.
