Derrick Byars, along with several other former collegians, begins anew in his quest to make NBA roster as Orlando Summer League opened Monday.
The former Commodores standout, two seasons removed from his college career, had planned to be in uniform for the Indiana Pacers over the next five days with a chance to showcase his talents, according to a report at http://vucommodores.blogspot.com
Byars is being joined by three first-round picks from the last two drafts on the Pacers’ summer league roster — Tyler Hansbrough (UNC), Brandon Rush (Kansas) and Roy Hibbert (Georgetown).
Last year, Byars was a member of the Bakersfield Jam in the NBA Development League. He was a second team All-NBADL selection, averaging 17.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists a game.
Former Commodores Shan Foster (Dallas) and Matt Freije (Portland) are playing in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
