Franklin hammers Hunters Lane

An electrical quirk after the game showed the final score as Franklin 60, Hunters Lane 1. That wasn't the final score, but it didn't make that much difference.

Franklin advanced to the third round of the TSSAA Class 5A playoffs — and a rematch with county rival Independence — with a 27-6 beat down of Hunters Lane in Madison. Franklin running back Anthony Steele ran for 91 yards and a touchdown and Rebel quarterback Graham Nichols had scoring runs of 39 and 31 yards.

"We've been playing pretty well," said Franklin coach Craig Clayton. "We've gotten better every week."

The Rebels dominated from start to finish and got things going with the first drive of the game, going 65 yards in 13 plays to score on a 3-yard dash by Steele.

Franklin made it 14-0 on a 59-yard option run by Ramsey Sellers. Nichols' two scoring runs came in the third quarter and the Rebels cruised from there.

Hunters Lane standout tailback Erik Wisdom scored on a 6-yard touchdown run with 3:24 remaining in the game to make it 27-6. The Warriors could not get going offensively all night and only made it into Franklin territory twice.

In the next round, Franklin will host Independence, which smashed Antioch 44-12 on Friday night. The Rebels dealt Independence its only Region 6-5A loss of the season, a 41-16 rout on Sept. 21.

"I'm sure they wanted us," Clayton said. "We're going back down there and it will be a battle."
