Former Hillsboro assistant Raymond Pratcher has been named new boys basketball coach at Pearl-Cohn High.

Pratcher, 31, is a former basketball and baseball player at Memphis Westwood High who attended Tennessee State University where he received his Masters of Education degree in sports administration.

“I’m very excited that God has given me the opportunity to be coach at such a prestigious program like Pearl-Cohn with so much history,’’ Pratcher, 31, said Thursday. “I’m looking forward to working with staff, the kids and the North Nashville community who I hope will be behind our program.’’

Pratcher has worked as varsity assistant and freshman coach at Hillsboro for the past two seasons under head coach Rodney Thweatt. His freshman teams went 34-4, including 18-1 and the city championship in 2009. This past season he led the freshman to the city semifinals.

“Rodney was a great mentor to me, showing me so much about how to build a program and a lot about basketball and life in general,’’ he said.

Asked about next season, Pratcher said, “we have a lot of talented rising seniors and juniors, as well as some top-notch sophomores we’re getting from (ninth-grade schools) Bass and John Early.

“I think our chances of turning the program back around are really good. We have a lot of things in place for us.’’
