U.S. District Court Judge Todd Campbell has ruled in favor of Brentwood Academy in a dispute over whether the recruiting rules put forth by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) violated its First and Fourteenth Amendment.

The school filed suit against TSSAA in 1997 following an investigation into possible violations of recruiting rules. TSSAA fined Brentwood $3,000 and placed it on four years probation in August 1997 after finding that Coach Carlton Flatt, head of athletics for Brentwood Academy and coach of its high school football team, was in violation of state recruiting rules in offering free football tickets to prospective players and inviting incoming male students to attend spring practices.
