Kentucky, WKU to play games at LP Field

Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 2:39pm

The University of Kentucky and Western Kentucky have agreed to play each other in a four-year football series that begins in 2010 and includes a pair of games at LP Field in Nashville.

The games in 2010 and 2012 will be played at Kentucky’s Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington, while the two games that would have been Western Kentucky’s home games will instead be played at LP Field in 2011 and 2013. The Danville (Ky.) Advocate-Messenger reported details of the agreement on its Web site Tuesday.

The Nashville Sports Council has called a press conference for Wednesday at noon at the LP Field West Side Stadium Club with respective head coaches Rich Brooks and David Elson present as well as athletics directors Mitch Barnhart of Kentucky and Wood Selig of WKU.

Why? The last thing we need is college teams tearing up the field.

This is crazy on all fronts. Two nonstate schools playing at LP. Who is the great mind that came up with this. Let 's just move the Kentucky Derby to Nashville. I guess MTSU and Vandy really apprciate the recruiting opportunity that gives the Kentucky Schools. This is not be renewed under any circumstances.

I do not see what the big deal is here. Let the two schools bring down a large crowd to play in our city. That means some of those people will stay overnight and a majority might even make a weekend out of it. Then, those people who make a weekend out of it, just might spend a lot of money and help with the Nashville economy.

On a separate note, I think the Grizzlies need to play 1 game a year in Nashville to draw awareness to the Tennessee pro team not in Nashville.

I'm going to look at this from a different angle. How is it that Kentucky gets to play Western at home and Western has to play their "home" game in Nashville?? Is the big bad SEC team scared of little ole Western Kentucky? Kentucky is a joke.

By: SirKnight on 7/29/09 at 1:15

I think Western saw this as an opportunity to help their visibility in the middle Tennessee area and make more money while playing here in Nashville. My guess is they do not draw nearly as many fans at their home field as they will in Nashville. There are multiple thousands of WKU alumni in the Nashville area they will come out in force to represent their school v. UK.

By: White_but_not_s... on 7/29/09 at 2:02

Lets see - newly expanded home field at WKU seats 23,500. LP field seats almost 69,000. UK will definitely bring more than the WKU field capacity as a visitor to LP. Incremental revenue to WKU - huge.

Incremental revenue to Nashville - significant and 100% incremental since the Titans only use 10 days a year or less. Wear and tear on field - yes - but grass is made to play on not just mow. SEC games are all televised, additional revenue to Nashville businesses.

Way to GO Nashville Sports Council!!!

SirKnight, if you think that WKU will bring more people to Nashville than Kentucky will then you're kidding yourself. This game will be another home game for the Wildcats, and LP field will be all blue.

White, I agree that this is a home run for the city of Nashville, but I'm not sold that it is for Western. Beating Kentucky would make it a lot easier to sell season tickets, but it's going to be a lot harder to do away from home. Even if Western didn't win those games, just playing Kentucky in their new stadium allows them to showcase their facility to a relatively new fan base (and recruiting base).

I did a little research and found out that Western realized their second highest attendance total in 2009. That means that they averaged less than 17,067, which is their highest attendance record set in 1971. I also found out that they only sold 9,201 season tickets in 2007 (although that probably went up slightly in 2008).

My point is, they're not selling out their own stadium. Playing UK in Bowling Green would go a long ways towards helping them get the support they need in their own community.
