LB Witherspoon will visit Titans; Crumpler eyes New England

Monday, March 8, 2010 at 6:33pm

The second Philadelphia Eagles free agent in as many days will visit the Titans when linebacker Will Witherspoon comes to town on Tuesday.

Witherspoon, 29, split time between the St. Louis Rams and Philadelphia Eagles in 2009, totaling 92 tackles with one interception.

Defensive end Jason Babin was at Baptist Sports Park on Monday.

Witherspoon, a former University of Georgia star, was originally with the Carolina Panthers from 2002-05 before joining the Rams.

The Titans need help at the outside linebacker position with Keith Bulluck a free agent still rehabbing from an ACL injury suffered in December.

Also, the Titans have concerns about David Thornton’s health, as he is coming off a hip injury and a shoulder problem that required surgery.

Crumpler in New England?

Tight end Alge Crumpler and his agent James Williams have stated all along that he would love to be back with the Tennessee Titans.

But it appears the club could have some competition for his services. A league source confirmed that Crumpler visited with the New England Patriots on Monday.

Williams could not be reached for comment.

Crumpler, 32, in his two seasons with the Titans has been the team’s primary run-blocking tight end, and also totaled 27 receptions in 2009 for 222 yards. He was part of the team’s run-blocking attack that helped Chris Johnson reach the 2,000-yard plateau last season.

Crumpler could be a good fit for the Patriots, who are short-handed at the tight end position with Benjamin Watson a free agent and having just released Chris Baker.

The Titans are in an unusual situation at tight end as well, with Crumpler being unrestricted and Bo Scaife holding a restricted free agent first-round tender that is for $4.9 million because of him having worn the franchise tag last season.

Too, Crumpler's value to the Titans likely goes up with the NE visit, regardless of whether he actually intends to sign there. Let's just hope he is used as a blocking tight end by whomever signs him, for he has caught a bad case of slippery fingers and fumblitis the last couple of years.

TitansFan035: Alge is a smart guy if he wants any chance to win a championship he will choose N.E and the Brady Bunch!! I agree even if NE offers him a little less. Playoff money and a little stability should make up any difference.

cmarcus45: Crumpler's value to the Titans likely goes up with the NE visit. Bud places a value on his players regardless of who wants them. He has a price in mind and that's it, my way or the highway not a dime more.

We all see how it went with Bosch and most likely it will go the same way with Bulluck. Team leaders, perhaps that's the problem; fan favorites and both great PR players for the Titans giving their time and money back to the community. Bulluck just gave out 9 $1,000 scholarships to area high school players. The number 9 was also a tribute to Steve McNair.

It appears Bud is in a team dismantling mode, Déjà vu 1993, shop or toss proven veterans with no plan on replacements to improve or maintain status quo.
