Lipscomb's ‘X’ factor poised to make a name for himself

Brandon Brown doesn’t believe he’s the forgotten man in the Lipscomb lineup.

But on a team that features the 2010 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year (Adnan Hodzic), a first-team all-conference guard (Josh Slater) who averages 17 points a game, and another guard (Jordan Burgason) who led the league in 3-point shooting, the 6-foot-7, 215-pound Brown is not the first who comes to mind.

“I guess sometimes I may not be on other teams’ radars as much as Adnan and Josh would,” Brown said. “I don’t really mind that role. I kind of like not being talked about too much until the game comes.”

The Brentwood Academy product doesn’t fly under the radar with his teammates and coaches.

“He is the X factor. There is no doubt about it,” Hodzic said. “He is the smartest player on the team, I think. He is just one of those guys that knows the game. He is our best defensive player. He is just huge for us.”

Even as the Bisons’ fourth scoring option, Brown averaged 10 points last year, along with 4.5 rebounds and nearly two assists, as Lipscomb finished 17-13, led the league in scoring and was part of a four-way tie for the conference title.

The forward is capable of putting up big offensive numbers — he scored a career-high 26 against Elon last year — but his defense is his strength. At times he has guarded the opposing teams’ point guards, shooting guards, small forwards and power forwards.

That makes him critical this season as the team looks to improve on defense after having allowed a conference-worst 75.2 points a game in 2009-10.

“We value his defense,” coach Scott Sanderson said. “His length, his ability to guard so many positions. … He has a great feel. You can’t teach feel. He just has a really good feel on both ends of how to play.”

Lipscomb opens its season against Trevecca on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.
