Montgomery Bell Academy football coach and athletic director Jeff Rutledge has resigned his positions after five years on the job.

Rutledge resigned Wednesday morning, the move coming three weeks after he interviewed for the then-open position as Brentwood Academy coach Dec. 15, a move that drew the ire of several in the MBA family.

When asked point-blank what impact the interview Rutledge had at BA a big rival and DII Region opponent of MBA on the resignation, headmaster Brad Gioia said essentially, none.

I dont think the situation at Brentwood Academy had a bearing on coach Rutledges resignation, Gioia said at his office Wednesday. I just think Jeff felt it was time.

Repeated efforts to reach Rutledge for comment were unsuccessful. In his five seasons, MBA went 39-20, including DII-AAA state titles in 02 and 03, his first two seasons there.
