It didn’t take Donnie Nickey long to realize the opportunity the Tennessee Titans put in front of him on Tuesday.

Nickey took all of about 10 minutes to re-up with the Titans, agreeing to a one-year deal that will have him back for his eighth season in Tennessee since being a fifth-round draft choice from Ohio State in 2003.

“I was optimistic, but I know enough not to take anything for granted. I thought they might re-sign me, but I figured would be a little bit later. So I had planned on seeing what was happening in free agency,” Nickey said. “When my agent called me and told me the deal we had on the table, I figured the grass is not always greener on the other side.

“I figured the fact that they wanted me back and wanted me early was a sign of respect. I thought about it for about 10 minutes before I agreed.”

Nickey, who serves as the Titans special teams captain, had wanted to stay with the Titans all along, as he has put down roots in Nashville and will be getting married this summer. His agent, Jeffrey Chilcoat, said all that factored into the decision to get a deal done before free agency.

“He is absolutely happy to be back,” Chilcoat said. “Donnie is getting married this summer, and he is excited to be back where he has spent his entire NFL career. Hopefully, this is not the last deal we do with the Titans, and he can continue there for the duration of his NFL career.”

Terms were not disclosed, but the deal is believed to be for the minimum base salary.

Nickey had 12 tackles as a backup safety in 2009.

Nickey is the second of the Titans’ free agents to agree to a new contract, joining Eugene Amano, who signed a five-year, $26.25 million deal last week.
