The Tennessee Titans have selected Pat Summitt to be the honorary 12th Titan for Sunday’s 2012 season-opener against the New England Patriots (noon, LP Field, CBS).

As part of the ceremony to honor the former University of Tennessee women’s basketball coach, Titans owner Bud Adams will donate $25,000 to the Pat Summitt Foundation in an effort to raise awareness and help find a cure to Alzheimer’s disease.

“I am very thankful for the generous support of Mr. Bud Adams and the Tennessee Titans' franchise,” Summitt said in a release from the team. “My son, Tyler and I have enjoyed attending Tennessee Titans' games and cheering for our home state football team. I am humbled and excited that the Tennessee Titans have joined our team in fighting Alzheimer's disease through the The Pat Summitt Foundation.”

It was just over a year ago that Summitt revealed she had been diagnosed with early onset dementia, Alzheimer's type. She founded the Pat Summitt Foundation to raise money for research related to the search for potential cures for the disease, and a social media campaign, ‘We Back Pat,” started a short time later.

She resigned as coach of the Lady Vols following the 2011-12 season. In 38 years in charge of the program she became the winningest NCAA basketball coach — men or women — in history and led UT to eight national championships.

• Guard Chris DeGeare was added to the Tennessee Titans practice squad.

The fifth round pick in 2010 by Minnesota out of Wake Forest became the eighth and final member of the Titans practice squad. He played eight games, with five starts, for the Vikings as a rookie but spent all of last season on their practice squad.

The eight-man reserve unit consists of two wide receivers, one running back, one fullback, one tight end, one guard, one defensive tackle and one safety.

• In what is playfully referred to as “Undie Sunday,” will accept donations of undergarments to benefit the Nashville YWCA Weaver Domestic Violence Shelter for two hours prior to kickoff.

Donation stations will be set up around LP Field for the following: New underwear for women and children (boys and girls, infant to 18); New bras for women; New socks for women and children (boys and girls, infant to 18); New pajamas for women and children (boys and girls, infant to 18).
