Nick Spaling and Taylor Beck had two points apiece but the Nashville Predators’ rookies allowed a goal 69 seconds after the opening faceoff and trailed the rest of the way in a 6-3 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers in a rookie scrimmage at Duluth, Ga. on Monday.

Spaling, a second-round selection in 2007, had a goal and an assist. He scored Nashville’s first at 4:41 of the second period, which got the Predators within one, 2-1. He added an assist on a third-period goal by 2008 top choice Colin Wilson.

Wilson’s goal was the only one for either team in the final 20 minutes and snapped a string of three straight Thrashers’ goals.

Beck had assists on the goals by Spaling and Wilson.

Defenseman Charles-Oliver Roussel had Nashville’s other goal, which included an assist by 2007 first-round choice Jonathan Blum.

Goalies Jeremy Smith and Chet Pickard split the playing time almost evenly – Smith played two seconds more than Pickard – and each allowed three goals. Two of the three scored against Pickard were with Atlanta on the power play.

The same two teams will play again at noon on Tuesday.
