Preps: DCA boys one win from finally returning to state basketball tournament

One win away from a long-awaited return to the state basketball tournament, the Donelson Christian Academy boys feel ready for the challenge.

The Wildcats (22-4) host Jackson Christian on Saturday in the DII-A Sectionals. A victory would vault them into their first state tournament since 2001. That year the Wildcats reached the Class A semifinals and finished 28-8.

“This season has been a big surprise,” veteran coach Presley Ramsey said. “We lost two starters from last season, and our only senior starter [Javvon Jones] came to us late after football season had ended.

“What’s been fun has been watching our guys improve so much, particularly over the last month, and how well they play defense. In the last five-six games, we’ve only been allowing team about 30 points a game.”

DCA won the DII Middle/East championship with a perfect 11-0 record, and went to the finals of the region tournament, where it lost to Franklin Road Academy but still earned the right to host a sectional contest.

“Finishing unbeaten in the region was quite an accomplishment for us,” Ramsey said.

Jones is probably the Wildcats’ top all-around player. Named to the all-region regular season and all-tournament team, the 6-foot-3 power forward is very versatile.

“Javvon is an excellent shooter and rebounder and, for a big man, he has quite a few assists,” Ramsey said.

Sophomore De’ Ewin, a stocky 6-1, 240-pound center and shooting guard Kyle Kennedy also made all-region.

“Kyle is our best three-point shooter,” Ramsey said.

Forward Collin Johnston, who also made all-region, and guard Josh Ericson, both juniors, round out an imposing starting lineup.

All sectional winners advance to the state tourney next week at Lipscomb University's Allen Arena.

• Hillwood stunner: Hillwood avenged two regular season losses to McGavock, stunning the Raiders 69-67 in the District 12-AAA tourney boys consolation game Monday night.

Hillwood led by nine points with three and a half minutes left before a furious Raider rally, capped by Michael Green’s hoop with 22 seconds left, gave them a 67-66 lead.

Anthony Johnson’s two free throws with 21 seconds left gave the Toppers a 68-67 lead, after which McGavock missed three close-in shots. Hillwood got the rebound and Johnson, who had a team-high with 19 points, made one of two free throws with 1.4 seconds left.

• Morrow shines: Glencliff’s Briana Morrow closed out a sensational District 12-AAA girls tournament with 33 points as she led the Colts to a 47-41 win over Cane Ridge in the girls consolation.

Morrow scored 11 points in the fourth quarter and finished the tournament with a three-game total of 84, by far the tourney best.

“She’s scored 260 points in our last 10 games, of which we are 8-2,” coach Glenn Falls said. “She’s on quite a roll.”
