Preps: Glencliff has plenty of weapons, nearly enough wins

Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 10:45pm

Boasting one of the most balanced attacks in Nashville, Glencliff is roaring toward the finish line.

Fresh off consecutive wins over Cane Ridge and Hillwood, the Colts are pointed toward a Region 6-AAA matchup at McGavock in a Thursday night game.

In last week’s 25-0 victory over Hillwood, the Colts had three backs hit the 100-yard mark in rushing — Montez Brown (113), Avery Hill (111) and Rodney Wright (100).

Scoring in every quarter, the Colts got touchdowns from four different players and ran up 396 yards rushing with 46 passing, for 442 yards total offense. Perhaps most impressive was junior quarterback Jarvis Lewis, who scored the first touchdown and completed seven of eight passes to five different receivers.

Brown also plays linebacker and has almost 100 tackles, tops in Nashville.

First-year coach Brandon Easley, a former Glencliff assistant, has returned to guide the team to a 5-3 record (2-2 in the region) so far after a 1-9 finish last year.

Glencliff almost has certainly secured a berth in the Class 5A playoffs. The TSSAA playoff rankings had the Colts No. 13 this week. Thirty-two teams make the field. Wins over McGavock or winless Hunters Lane Oct. 28 would guarantee a playoff berth.

Thursday games: Several games in the Nashville area have been moved up to Thursday night. Besides the Glencliff-McGavock game, the Nashville list includes Antioch at Overton, Cane Ridge at Hillwood and Ezell-Harding at Davidson Academy.

Overton (7-1), which has won seven straight, can clinch the Region 6-AAA title with a win over the rival Bears.

State Golf: Ensworth ended an amazingly long streak by Chattanooga Baylor when it won the DII-AA girls state golf tournament Tuesday.

Sophomore Alexandra Farnsworth, who shot a two-day score of 145 ran away to a 12-stroke victory in the individual standings and led Ensworth’s effort. The Tigers shot a 312 total and edged Baylor by two strokes.

Baylor was attempting to win a 17th straight title to set a national record for consecutive golf championships.

University School of Nashville won the DI-A girls championship with a 322, one stroke better than Nashville rival Franklin Road Academy. Junior Sara Garmezy fired a 156 and claimed medalist honors. She edged Donelson Christian Academy senior Sarah Harris by three strokes.

In the boys division, an afternoon rain forced cancellation of the second round Tuesday, meaning all the scores reverted to the first day. McCallie (DII-AA) and ECS (DII-A) won those championships.

District volleyball: Led by tournament MVP Jahcenda Garrett, regular season champion Overton rallied to beat Hillwood High 19-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-18 and win the District 12-AAA tournament Wednesday night. The host Bobcats lost the first game, then trailed in each of the last three before pulling out the win.

Both teams advance to the Region 6-AAA tournament next Tuesday at Centennial High.

Semifinals and finals of the District 11-AA volleyball tournament are scheduled Thursday afternoon at Whites Creek where top seed Christ Presbyterian Academy was expected to add the tournament title to the Lions’ regular season crown.

Broome named coach of week: Arcentae Broome, who guided his Maplewood Panthers to a 21-20 win over No. 2 ranked CPA last Friday, has been named the Titans High School Football Coach of the Week. The Panthers rallied from a 20-7 deficit in the final quarter for two late touchdowns.

Morse named to Pan-Am staff: Nashville Aquatic Club head coach John Morse has been chosen by USA Swimming to be a member of the coaching staff for the USA men’s team for the 2011 Pan American Games. The Games, scheduled for Guadalajara, Mexico, run Oct. 15-22.
