Veteran Nashville coach Bubba Spears is expected to be named head coach for the new East Literature Magnet School football program.

“It’s a great opportunity for me – we’re returning football to East Nashville,’’ Spears said, referring to the revival of what had been old East High football. “When I played quarterback at Stratford, I remember the games we had with East High and how fun those times were.’’

Spears, 50, has a lengthy resume. After finishing at Stratford in 1975, he started as an assistant at Mt. Juliet High in 1979 under Howell Flatt for three years. He then coached at Joelton Middle School for three years.

He came to work as an assistant under Jerry Pigue when Hunters Lane High opened in 1986, then went to Antioch as an assistant in 1990. He became head coach at his alma mater, Stratford, in 1993. In 1999, he went to McGavock, serving as an assistant for seven years.

Two years ago, he returned to serve as quarterbacks coach under coach Richard Campbell at Hunters Lane, where he is also head baseball coach.
