MURFREESBORO -- Brentwood's Kenny Ra has had an up and down season, according to his coaches.
Fortunately for the Bruins, Ra was up during their Class AAA quarterfinal game against White Station onWednesday at the Richard Siegel Soccer Complex. The sophomore midfielder scored two goals and had an assist -- all in the first half -- and Brentwood (17-4-3) advanced with a 5-1 victory.
The defending state champion also got two goals from leading scorer Nick DeSalvatore and one from senior midfielder Michael Giordano. Next up is Knoxville Bearden (14-4-4), a 4-0 victor over Columbia, on Thursday in the semifinals.
“We played well offensively but we can always play better defensively,” Brentwood coach Mike Purcell said.
Brentwood scored four first-half goals on just five shots, and Ra -- who came in off the bench -- had an immediate impact.
He centered a ball perfectly to Giordano at the 18 minute mark, and Giordano beat Spartan keeper Cliftom McDugle to give Brentwood a 1-0 lead. Ra scored on his own two minutes later and gave the Bruins 2-0 lead. After DeSalvatore scored his first at the 24 minute mark, Ra then added his second goal with an assist from Giordano and pushed the margin to 4-0.
“Anytime you play a team from Middle or East Tennessee you expect a very tough match, White Station head coach Zeke Vezina said. “Brentwood has a great tradition and they have been here before.
“They were very aggressive early on and got us on our heels and we couldn’t recover."
