Sonny Gray retired 11 of the first 13 batters he faced, but then allowed a solo home run and two unearned runs – all with two outs – in the bottom of the fourth, which sent Vanderbilt on its way to a 4-1 defeat at Alabama on Friday in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.

Gray allowed five hits in 5.2 innings and lost for just the second time this season. He also struck out four and walked four.

Freshman Anthony Gomez drove in the Commodores’ only run and was one of three VU players with two hits. His two-out double in the top of the seventh drove in Connor Harrell and made it 3-1.

Yet it was Gomez’s error – his first of the season – following Jake Smith’s home run, which led to Alabama’s two unearned runs.

Aaron Westlake and Andrew Giobbi each added two singles for Vanderbilt (15-3, 0-1).

Alabama won its seventh straight and improved to 15-1 overall.
