Titans call workout with Manning an 'important step in the process'

The Tennessee Titans became the third – and presumably the last – team to put quarterback Peyton Manning through a workout when the parties got together Saturday in Knoxville.

There was a certain poignancy to the location. The fact that Manning played college football there for the University of Tennessee and remains one of the most beloved athletes in the state as a result in considered by many a significant factor in favor of the Titans as they try to sign the free agent quarterback.

“This morning we traveled to Knoxville and had a workout with Peyton,” general manager Ruston Webster said in a statement released by the team. “I thought he looked comfortable throwing the ball and we had a good visit.

“This is another important step in the process.”

Manning worked out for officials of the Denver Broncos a day earlier at Raleigh, N.C. and earlier in the week for the San Francisco 49ers.

He also interviewed with the Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins bit did not work out for either of those two. Officials from those teams confirmed Friday that they would not sign the only four-time most valuable player in NFL history.

Manning became a free agent a week and a half ago when the Indianapolis Colts released him after 14 seasons and two Super Bowl appearances (one victory).

It is unclear whether his next step is to pick a team and negotiate a contract or of there is more to it. He has offered no indication as to when he intends to make his decision.

Peyton's decision will depend on which of several factors he and Ashley
decide are the most important. If he wants the most immediate access
to another Super Bowl Ring it will be San Francisco. If it's to remain in
the AFC but not in our and his same division it's Denver. If it's for a little
longer term and being close to family and largest number of friends then
the Titans will be the choice. They are celebrating their 2001 St. Patrick's
Day wedding this weekend in the Smokies. not the Rockies! Hense
the Knoxville workout. Is that a good sign?

Perhaps Bud could move the team to Pigeon Forge. Make it the Peyton-n-Parton franchise. I jest, of course. I just hope we don't let our hearts overrule our heads on what is best for the team. Instead of hoping Peyton chooses Tennessee, let's hope the man has a few more good years left in him at quarterback.
