Tennessee Titans quarterback Kerry Collins might have been a little bit out of his element Tuesday night at the CMT Music Awards, but the old pro handled himself just fine.
Collins, who aspires to be a country music songwriter, participated in a skit with Taylor Swift, and presented an award with Heidi Newfeld as well as making his entrance into the Sommet Center on the red carpet.
Along the way, he got to meet Dierks Bentley and Alan Jackson and a few other country celebrities he has admired for awhile as a big country music fan.
In meeting Jackson, Collins got the opportunity to tell Jackson that his “Good Time” CD was a favorite of his that got plenty of listens throughout the 2008 football season when the Titans started 10-0 and finished 13-3.
“I told him about basically from September through December, I basically played his CD in my truck and it was a big part of my year last year,” Collins said. “He’d heard about it and congratulated me on a good year. I’m a big fan of his.”
Collins said that most of the singers who met him got around to talking football at some point.
“The conversation a lot of times quickly turns to football. It was stuff like How are you guys looking this year, and what a great year last year,” Collins said.
As for his role on the show, Collins got an audible called on him by show producers when the skit with Swift was planned, then scuttled, then reinserted into the lineup.
All in all, Collins said he enjoyed the experience of getting to meet and greet his favorite country stars and to present an award.
“It was a lot of fun. Obviously, being a big country music fan, it was good to be around a lot of the artists and everything,” Collins said. “Getting an opportunity to go on stage and actually be part of the show was a real thrill. I was pretty nervous. It’s a little bit different element for me. I don’t know if the red carpet thing is for me. I don’t know if I could do something like that every weekend, but it was fun.”
Collins also admitted to being a big fan of rock group Def Leppard, which made an appearance with Swift at the end of the show, but the quarterback had to leave before they took the stage.
